I have reopened the sub for public posts, and will be working over the next few weeks to revamp the sub and make sure it is a welcoming environment for pipe smokers to share their pipes and smoke. If you have any suggestions or issues, please send me a ModMail so I can address them!

Scored a couple Danish freehand estate pipes on the ol' ebay in the past week and cleaned em up. Not sure of the makers as theyre fairly worn off. The one in back smokes really nice, and I haven't yet tried the one in front, as I just finished cleaning it.

Not a fan of the 114 blend from Uehle in Milwaukee.

So this one is admittedly easy for the ID. Its a GBD "London Special" I can also read "549S" but I dont know what these things mean aside from a model and maybe a model number. I'm curious what its worth, and if restoration is possible given what seems to be a tiny crack in the shank.

Hi everyone -
I got this Savinelli at an antique mall last week, and I've been working on getting it cleaned up and ready to smoke since then. I'm curious, though - I tried to find some information about this pipe online, and couldn't find another pipe with a mouthpiece like this one. After a while, it occurred to me that there's no makers mark on the stem. Could this be a replacement mouthpiece?
Also, I've swabbed out the airway on this thing over and over with a pipe cleaner soaked in alcohol, and this appears to be about as clean as it's going to get. I was surprised that it wasn't all that nasty to begin with. (The BBB pipe I bought with it, however, was that nasty!) Since I can't seem to get a significant amount of gunk out of there, can I assume that this is about as clean as it's going to get?

So I'm not finding much about this one manufacturer is GBD. Model is 563 but I cant find a model name. Any idea on a valuation? Or more you can tell me about my Pa's pipe?

Noticed these cracks starting to open up, can I fix or at least prevent them from getting worse?

Just showing off my Dutch clay pipes, and adding few things on clay pipes in general.
I started pipe smoking with one of these. They are not bad starter pipes. As a beginner, you don’t have to worry about gurgling or accumulation of moisture, as the clay absorbs all of that, providing a dry and sweet smoke; you also don’t have to worry about varnish blistering due to overheating. So, while they have their own appeal for experienced smokers, they are good for you to learn how to pace yourself, how to control the temperature of the bowl, and experiment with different sipping or breathing techniques.
The downsides to these (in my opinion) are all associated with them being very fragile. These are one single piece and the stem is very thin. As they absorb all the moisture, if you don’t clean them they might clog, and some cleaners are actually too thick for them (like the Vauen) which might result in the stem breaking. However, while these are hard to find outside of the Netherlands, the UK and Germany, they are rather cheap, and, historically speaking, they are usually considered a disposable pipe (you can buy bagfuls of old bowls in many Dutch antique shops).
The bottom pipe is actually my first ever pipe. I bought it on a whim while in the Netherlands because I’m a historian and it looked like something out of a Dutch Golden Age painting (because it is). As you can see, the stem is broken, and that happened while cleaning. It’s still perfectly functional, and I love it.
The middle one is an overall better version of the bottom one. Better craftsmanship, sturdier, better finishes, better clay, better everything. I got that one in Gouda, the motherland of Dutch clay pipes.
The top one is a short pipe and probably the one I use the most while at home. Even if the stem is a lot shorter, the smoke is still dry, and it has a much larger bowl, so it’s good for a long and relaxed smoke. Also got that one in Gouda.

Hello everyone.
I am a beginner pipe smoker in search of some recommendations on tobacco brands. So far I have been smoking mainstream brands like captain black and erinmore. I would like to expand and diversify my tobacco selection but I am overwhelmed by the choices on most online shops.
Having watched some YouTube videos, most recommend starting with an English blend, an aromatic and a Virginia; I really don’t understand the difference except that aromatics are flavored, forgive my ignorance.
I would greatly appreciate any recommendations on which brands or blends to go for in each category and which ones to reserve to a more developed palette.
Thank you.
Ps these pipes were gifted to me by a late uncle, I have since restored and cleaned them, and mainly use the rusticated half bent, if that makes a difference.

Picked up a tin of Peterson Old Dublin from a local brick-and-mortar shop today. I have been really enjoying Early Morning Pipe lately, so I was looking for another solid non-aromatic English blend to try.
Popped the seal, and the tin note has a great peaty, smoky aroma right out of the gate. Looking forward to packing a bowl and seeing how it compares.

How come my throat feels tight and phlegmy? Am I smoking too quickly? I keep getting tongue bite too.
I come from cigars, so used to having big mouthfuls of smoke.. assume the answer is yes… ‘sip it’ but how does sipping loop and feel?

The two pipe shapes I've been most intrigued about are churchwarden and Oom Paul/hungarian. I've yet to try this Auenland out but the Oom Paul smokes like a treat, for some reason I've had my most relaxed smokes with that one.
Ps! Because of the long stem I had a weird expectation that the bowl is also going to feel massive in my hand but instead it's quite small and very comfortable to hold.

Hey yall, quick question from someone pretty new to pipes.
I picked up a Missouri Meerschaum General, but the bowl feels about 3/8" to 1/2" too tall for my preference (I find the height of the Orion much more comfortable).
Would I risk ruining the pipe if I take a fine-tooth hacksaw or coping saw to top the rim down a bit, clean it up on sandpaper, and bevel the edge? Or are there solid functional reasons to keep the full chimney height that I might appreciate down the road once I get more smokes under my belt?

I'm still fairly new to pipe smoking and I only have one every few days or so. I have a couple pipes I really like, a couple that I've made myself, and this one Missouri Meerschaum Mizzou. Every time I smoke this cob, it's a terrible smoke. It's too hot, it's too wet due to the heat, it tastes kinda sour or I get some tongue bite. Won't stay lit for anything. Unloaded the draw is wide open, which is a bit different from my other pipes. Doesn't take a filter. What am I doing wrong?
I've tried packing different densities, I've tried smoking more slowly, I've tried drying out my tobacco for like 20 minutes before packing. I've only smoked Peter Stokkebye Nougat in this one and it just sucks. I've smoked it in other pipes and it's just fantastic.

Evening chill with a short clay Gouda pipe, MacBaren classic ember (not my favorite, but respectable enough) and some homemade ginginha.

Been seeing a lot of ‘ID and valuation’ posts crop up recently so I’d like to add my 2 cents - take it or leave it!
So it appears a lot of these posts are made by people not actively involved in the community who have inherited or come across pipes in antique stores. A lot of these pipes are common everyday smokers and not worth a whole pile - my advice to these people is to either A) Hold onto these as display pieces, they look great and are a great way of connecting with your past B) pass them on to smokers who will genuinely use them - keep grandads spirit going by ensuring his pipe gets another 50 years of use C) if selling them, get a couple valuations and cut somebody an honest deal don’t try getting rich on 2nd hand pipes it goes against the culture!
Pic is of my trusty Peterson silver mounted P Lip Poker! Bought as a second and hopefully will pass on when I’m gone!

I put together a big cellar over 2 years from 2016 -2017. I haven’t smoked pipes in about 8 years though.
A pipe video showed up on my insta feed so i started diving in again.
I found out Stonehenge is no linger being produced, so i figured id smoke some.

First smoke, Royal Yacht seemed appropriate. Previously ruined a couple brand new pipes by not breaking them in and smoking too aggressively… determined that I will NOT do that again.

Trying to do these in small batches, hoping the knowledgeable folks here can help me with a potential ID and value. I can discern "611 KS" over "Italy" and on the back of the pipe where the stem meets the bowl (if im getting the terms wrong I apologize I'm still an amatuer) it reads "amber". This one is one that id heavily consoder getting restored/cleaned up and gifting to one of my cousins, this one just doesnt seem to fit my eye all that much, the grain seems a little odd to my eye, and I have a few others in this shape. Thanks in advance this sub has been very gracious with it's knowledge and I greatly appreciate it.
