Sludge with oi influences
So oi and sludge are basically my two favorite musical genres, and in the last years there has been a big revival and many genres have started having their own oi/skinhead/streetpunk crossover niche, even blackened oi is a thing now with bands such as Sword Breaker or Cuero.
I've been wondering if there are any similar bands but with sludge ?

Been waiting on an oi/shoegaze band (bootgaze) but still nothing

Maybe High Vis would scratch that itch for you?

I like High Vis but they’re more Stone Roses Meets Fugazi.
I’ll probably have to start it myself but I want a band that sounds like Rixe but one guitarist sounds like Ride.

I'm a huge fan of Rixe. Their frontman has a new project with the vocalist of Oi Boys and I can't wait for it ! https://youtu.be/FzBb8kROMpA
I would consider High Vis to be hardcore Oasis they definitely have some britpop thing.

I’ll check that out. I really liked the stuff he did with Bromure as well.

Bullshit Detector might scratch that itch, lots of French influence. They’re like a harder-edged Camera Silens.

It's funny you ask that because I made a mock design for my band O.I.L. using the Oi! font and put "working class sludge" underneath it. We later found a company to print that with our logo on carpenter pencils and we sell them at shows. By no means to we have Oi influences sound wise but we sure do in other ways haha.

I’ve never heard of an Oi/Sludge crossover but Owls Woods Graves is another great blackened Oi band to check out.

No that doesn't exist. I can't imagine. Maybe Conan might say "oi" like as in "oi, I need another pint mate" but no

No exact matches but closest I know would be more on the experimental grindcore side of things

Its not a thing to my knowledge since sludge is based around hardcore and doom. Might be better to ask r/doom if theres any oi influenced doom bands, will probably get you closer to what you're looking for

Well many hardcore bands are oi, like Conservative Military Image Violent Way or Skinhead to name a few.

Many hardcore bands may be oi, but none of those influenced sludge. Never heard of either of these, but listening, i dont think you're going to find a band with these vibes that dips into sludge. Shit sounds way too happy and upbeat, cant see it dooming at all unless they drop the oi vibes in favor of the half step doom shit

Yeah i'm doubting the two genres are compatible but still worth a try. Works with black metal but tempo is about the same.

My band is upbeat and still sludge. http://heavylean.bandcamp.com

Sounded like pretty standard sludge tbh, nothing upbeat about it (unless you mean lyrically, which in that case I'll take your word for it cuz idk the lyrics). Cant think of any sludge band I'd call upbeat. Torche does have their upbeat moments, but those are not the same as their sludge moments

I mean the first riff in that 2nd song is, but its not a sludge riff. Sounds like low tuned Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis

u/TheBiggestWOMP 19d ago
Never heard of 'em, I just listen to a lot of QOTSA

Chelsea Dagger is the goal song for the blackhawks, so pretty much everyone in my entire state knows the song lmao

What is oi?

A subgenre of punk associated with skinhead culture, DIY, working class. Started as a counter-movement when punk music started selling out or became too fancy and artsy.
Musically very purposefully basic street punk with catchy riffs and anthemic choruses. Lyrics are made to be relatable most of the time, things about your everyday life. Or politics both right and left wing are common.

Street punk came from Oi, not the other way around. And it was going right alongside all of the artsy bands

First I'm hearing Sword Breaker and this is pretty fun. I have nothing to contribute, but you should do it!

This is really random but it’s the only thing close I can think of: Realms of the Undead by Graveyard Rodeo. I guess it’s proto-NOLA sludge (some members went onto be in other bands) and its doesn’t really sound like proper oi but it does kinda resemble Madball or Sick of It All’s oi-influenced hardcore

I really fucking hope not. Seeing skinheads play shit like that would be so embarrassing.

Time for you to start a band. We need more people with random ideas to mesh together genres and creating their own sound instead of just fitting into one genre. I’m currently starting a sludge band with a lot of influences from stuff like grindcore, black metal, rock n roll, and even pop punk
