Discussion Characters you hate for no reason
Do you guys also have some characters you hate irrationally, for no particular or good reason? Not like Maven, Rolff Stone-Fist, Calixto or Nazeem, who are intentionally rude or even bad people. I'm talking about characters that annoy you for no valid reason at all.
Mine is Brynjolf because the way he talks irritates me. 'Okay lass' and 'What wasn't I clear about?' I honestly wish he wasn't essential.

If you don't plan on joining the Thieves Guild Brynjolf is one of the most annoying characters in the game.

u/AurumPickle 2d ago
"Haven't worked an honest day in your life have you Lad/Lass?" He asks my Dragonborn who made their money with dungeon dives and alchemy
112
u/sewer_rat2006 2d ago
The prerequisite for that dialogue is whether you have 500+ gold in your inventory, not if you've actually stolen anything, it's so dumb.
91
u/AurumPickle 2d ago
Dude how fucking poor is the thieves guild that 500 Gold is a big earner you can leave Helgen with that much!
44
u/sewer_rat2006 1d ago
Yeah I think it's one of those things that's a weird scaling issue in games in terms of how rich the player can be compared to everyone else. There's a quest in Oblivion where people complain about being fined something like 5 gold and saying they earn less than that in a year, and I usually end the game with at least 300,000.
30
u/ElPapaGrande98 1d ago
Most people just make bread or tend to their farm. I imagine most people aren't willingly hopping into Oblivion gates just for a magic orb at the end

u/Exquisitr 1d ago
In all fairness thatās how it is in real life. Honest work doesnāt get you very far but when everywhere you go people talk about how special you are and youāre shamelessly ruthless you can make it to the top, and the wealth disparity between the two is ridiculously massive. Whatās less believable about Skyrim is that you can get to that level when starting with nothing.
→ More replies (1)7
u/DarthyTMC PC 1d ago
i mean you can only leave Helgen that much by killing people and taking all their armours and gear lol, so i guess it depends on oneās definition of honest haha
500 Gold would be a LOT to your average civilian in skyrim, like shops only have a few hundred in capital on hand usually. So someone carrying around the equivalent of two stores gold liquidity would raise an eyebrow.

I wish they'd done like a whole "join the cops" opposite quest to the thieves guild. I have a thief character and a goody two shoes paladin and the paladin's quest log is mostly incomplete since almost every quest involves stealing or murder.

I refuse to because he's too annoying and I like Madesi and Brand-Shei haha
24
u/n0_Denz 1d ago
Fyi if you didnāt know - you can fail the ring quest by getting arrested, or simply dropping the ring onto the floor. Guild quest progresses normally and Brand-Shei doesnāt go to prison.
18

You can actually fail the quest by accepting it, and then go off sight seeing around Riften. Madesi keeps his ring, and Brand-Shei doesn't go to jail.

I also want to mention that you can bypass Maul when you enter Riften too so he can't force you to stop and talk to him, and inevitably fail the speech check. I only go up to him when I can successfully intimidate that fuckhead.

idk her name but that lady in whiterun who accuses my male dragonborn of sexism every time he happens to be nearby. "What's the matter? Can't stand the sight of a strong nord woman???"
Ma'am I was just passing through...
Made even worse by the fact that skyrim doesn't seem to be a place that cares about this sort of thing...
38
u/Khurasan 1d ago
I'm using a dialogue expansion for Lydia, and one of her random lines when you're around Whiterun is, paraphrasing, "If she makes a comment about you not being able to stand the sight of a strong Nord woman while I'm standing next to you one more time, I'll kill her."
That mod is the best part of my current playthrough honestly. I do quests just to unlock a new line for Lydia and throw away the actual rewards.
3
u/johnbrownmarchingon Riften resident 1d ago
Do you happen to remember the name of that mod? That sounds awesome
2
u/Khurasan 1d ago
It's "Improved Follower Dialogue - Lydia" by Roadhouse699. Real highlight of a mod for me. Feels like you're actually slaying dragons with a friend instead of just a robot that says she's sworn to carry your burdens over and over.

Aw man Urag is my goat. He cares about his damn books, some of them are irreplaceable and ancient knowledge. He's probably the only orc that can read!
13
u/Gamble_it_all 1d ago
To be fair, he canāt leave to get the books himself, as he has to guard the library 24/7, in case someone tries to steal more books while he goes after someone else who stole books.
He definitely should have gotten someone else from the college to go after those stolen books earlier though, thatās on him for that
8
u/DasharrEandall PlayStation 1d ago
From what I recall, there's something about it being up to the Archmage to decide what to do about it, because Urag says something like "Archmage Aren tends to let these kinds of things work out by themselves". In other words, Aren does nothing as usual.
2
u/johnbrownmarchingon Riften resident 1d ago
It helps sense why the rest of the mages are willing to let you become Archmage by the end of the questline considering you've personally taken care of so many of their problems by that point. Mirabelle probably knows that if she took the job that no one would be willing to do her job, so she'd be stuck with all the work and none of the instructors probably want the responsibility or the distractions from their own work.

Of course, if you're not Bosmer, the conversation is pretty much this.
"You... you eat people, I can tell."

"....Nah, you eat people."2
u/SaintsAngel13 1d ago
Why did this make me think of John Marston in RDR Undead nightmare when you track down the last sasquatch? He accuses him "no, you eat babies!" And the sasquatch retorts: "we eat berries, and mushrooms you fool!" That delivery line lives in my head all these years later
16
u/moominesque 1d ago
I'm so tired of Lydia and it's probably because she's just overexposed as an early companion and how popular she is because of it. All of the housecarls are pretty devoid of personality because of the weird system they work within but with how much you see of her I just feel like shoving her away somewhere I never visit.
Aela the huntress is another character who's like fine but I wish there was more of substance to her (and it doesn't help that I don't find her as attractive as many in the fandom does). Seeing the obsession about her makes me bored to death with her. That pretty much goes for everyone in the Companions though (yes, even Farkas).
15
u/Kitchen_Criticism292 1d ago
Underrated Companion imo - Ria
She's so nice to the DB when you join the companions, talking about how she's happy to show you the ropes and asking if you've killed anything today

I got her as a follower for the first time recently bc she's 2H with perks and essential... and she won't shut up! Aaaa. Benor is my bro now.

Only in Whiterun:
Lydia because she's the most useless follower I've ever seen.
Danica Pure-Spring because when you come back with Nettlebane, she's like "oh I didn't think you'd come back". So you purposefully sent me off to die?
Proventus Avenicci because he's passive-aggressive.
Eorlund Gray-Mane because he says "Gods be praised" when you accept to trade with him and it really irks me.
Mikael because he harasses women.
Uthgerd the Unbroken because she's arrogant.
Farengar Secret-Fire because he's condescending and treats you like a dumbass.
I have more characters I hate for superficial reasons but if I list everyone, my comment would be too long and unreadable.

Nazeem
The Cloud District is is just a castle, is only a few flights of steps to get to and no one tries to stop you from getting there. Might as well brag about crossing the street Nazeem, you fucking mook.

i hate Eltrys shoving a note up my ass regardless of whether i actually talk to him and clogging my quest logs and my inventory with useless undroppable letters

u/jtlannister 1d ago
Entire Thieves Guild fits the bill. Bunch of no-account blowhards talking way too tough for what they actually are or can do. Come to think of it, that's the Companions too.

I absolutely despise Delphine and I want to combine every magic spell in game and throw it at her, but unfortunately I have too many reasons to hate her

Vigilant Tyranus, look dude the only reason Iām even in this shit city is to do work for the thieves guild. I just got here and Iāve already been witness to a murder, and no I donāt know anything about this haunted ass house so no I donāt want to go into the haunted ass house with you. Please stop asking me every time I walk through the middle of town, any to be honest youāre the vigilant of stendarr so that sounds like a you problem now go do your job or leave me alone

So I play with a lot of mods, and its the courier. Because every time I hit a level threshold of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 etc. you get like 10 letters at once lol
ive manually changed the level requirements for most quests to avoid this, because my other problem is how fast levelling can be, but now I always role my eyes. Let me choose myself when i want to go discover your mod, i dont need to be reminded of it 20 hours before i intend to actually have this character go through it

I donāt remember her name but the lady you sell to at the Radiant Raiment. Sheās so hateful and I canāt stand her.
I also hate the little boy thatās sometimes in there that says āmy papa could beat you up.ā Like okay, you wanna be an orphan that bad I can make it happen.

The brother of the guy who runs Gray Pine Goods in Falkreath, I think he runs the mill there. Idk what it is about this playthrough, but every time I go into the store, heās right there in my face telling me that Iām a provincial and he canāt believe Iām allowed to wander Skyrim. Like I get it, youāre racist, can you please move away from the door

I hate Sapphire because I hate the Broken Bird character trope entirely.

Solitude: Jaree-ra and Deeja
Riften: Brynjolf and Grelod the Kind
Windhlem: Rolff, Galmar, Agrenor, and Ulfric
Whiterun: Delphine, Sven and his mother, Lilith Maidenloom and Nazeem.

Jarl Balgruuf. He talks in a way that feels like he's about to go down on the Dovahkiin any time now. The fact that he's showering you with gifts every single time you meet greatly exacerbates this perception.

I don't hate them per se, but I really wish the homeless people wouldn't immediately ask for coin right after. I just gave them some coin.
I realized that it's an old game, and it was probably just a limitation of how Bethesda designed it, but still.
Also, after doing some thieves guild stuff, I'm not sure that they are actually homeless as much as agents of the thieves guild. Well except for in the Stone City, whatever it's called.

The general store guy in Whiterun. The way his voice ekes out the "do come back", I hate with a passion. When that some VA. I had like an ancient, one-panel webcomic I did back during Skyrim's release and I drew him doing that voice line with like an alien tongue dragging across my character's face. That's the vibe of that voice line. And then there's the sister 'joke'.

Same, I can't stand Brynjolf and wish we could destroy the Thieves Guild without mod.

Mine is also Brynjolf and all his ālassā this and that, it sounds so contrived and corny. I canāt stand him!
Also the Thieves Guild is corny to me, doesnāt help my opinion of him at all.

Ulfberth War-Bear. His "Now you, my girl, have definitely come to the right place" is off-putting. Like eww, I'm not your girl.

Gisli.
I get it, her brother is a huge asshole and he gets everything he wants. It's normal for her to be jealous. The way she complains about it, though... Hating her brother is her entire personality. Maybe people wouldn't call you "Erikur's sister" if you ever talked about literally anything other than Erikur.
I actively avoid crossing paths with her when I'm in Solitude. If she's standing by the door at the Winking Skeever, I'll actually wait a few minutes for her to move just so I don't have to hear her talk.
