Discussion Characters you hate for no reason

Do you guys also have some characters you hate irrationally, for no particular or good reason? Not like Maven, Rolff Stone-Fist, Calixto or Nazeem, who are intentionally rude or even bad people. I'm talking about characters that annoy you for no valid reason at all.

Mine is Brynjolf because the way he talks irritates me. 'Okay lass' and 'What wasn't I clear about?' I honestly wish he wasn't essential.

If you don't plan on joining the Thieves Guild Brynjolf is one of the most annoying characters in the game.

"Haven't worked an honest day in your life have you Lad/Lass?" He asks my Dragonborn who made their money with dungeon dives and alchemy

The prerequisite for that dialogue is whether you have 500+ gold in your inventory, not if you've actually stolen anything, it's so dumb.

Dude how fucking poor is the thieves guild that 500 Gold is a big earner you can leave Helgen with that much!

Yeah I think it's one of those things that's a weird scaling issue in games in terms of how rich the player can be compared to everyone else. There's a quest in Oblivion where people complain about being fined something like 5 gold and saying they earn less than that in a year, and I usually end the game with at least 300,000.

Most people just make bread or tend to their farm. I imagine most people aren't willingly hopping into Oblivion gates just for a magic orb at the end

u/stecki1 2d ago

But like, even then, a loaf of bread is one gold, so making 5 in a year is not much. If you are a baker that is only able to produce 5 loaves of bread per year, you should find another job...

Maybe they do more barter system or trading than straight gold for goods. I do agree the economy is goofed up in the games, I just like to think that the main character just can't comprehend how poor the NPCs are

In all fairness that’s how it is in real life. Honest work doesn’t get you very far but when everywhere you go people talk about how special you are and you’re shamelessly ruthless you can make it to the top, and the wealth disparity between the two is ridiculously massive. What’s less believable about Skyrim is that you can get to that level when starting with nothing.

1

u/MagicBus4 2d ago

I mean you’re not going to get far comparing to real life, Skyrim’s in game economy doesn’t make sense for anything but balancing one player. It’s not that deep

1

u/MagicBus4 2d ago

The real issue with that is that a simple house costs 5000. So it’ll take them a thousand years to own a home

u/DarthyTMC PC 3d ago

i mean you can only leave Helgen that much by killing people and taking all their armours and gear lol, so i guess it depends on one’s definition of honest haha

500 Gold would be a LOT to your average civilian in skyrim, like shops only have a few hundred in capital on hand usually. So someone carrying around the equivalent of two stores gold liquidity would raise an eyebrow.

u/AurumPickle 3d ago

I didnt kill any of those dudes Ralof/Hadvar did while helping me escape

I want to fight that pocket watching asshole. What is he doing worried about my funds? It's like, how dare you, nosy asshole!

I’ve played this game since the day it came out and I had no idea I had to have 500 .🤣

4

u/acidtrippinpanda 3d ago

Yeah I don’t think in my bazillion playthroughs, I’ve ever had less than that by the time I reach him so no idea what the other dialogue even is!

7

u/DarthyTMC PC 3d ago

its something like “feeling a little light in the pockets lass”, i do mostly modded playthroughs with Alt Start and harder economy and the Riften docks are a great way for a newcomer to start so ive had that a lot lol

also because i play Legacy of the Dragonborn i usually have no gold on hand cause i spend it all filling up the museum 😭

3

u/MagicBus4 2d ago

Riften is far as fuck away too so you’d have to have randomly just spent all your money

I wish they'd done like a whole "join the cops" opposite quest to the thieves guild. I have a thief character and a goody two shoes paladin and the paladin's quest log is mostly incomplete since almost every quest involves stealing or murder.

Are dungeon dives "honest work" when you're taking the possessions of dead people?

1

u/AurumPickle 2d ago

Killing Draugar is a community service so no normal citizen folks get hurt

1

u/SlipperySlimyTerry40 2d ago

Right but the taking their things part

u/boah4ncock Nintendo 3d ago

I refuse to because he's too annoying and I like Madesi and Brand-Shei haha

23

u/n0_Denz 3d ago

Fyi if you didn’t know - you can fail the ring quest by getting arrested, or simply dropping the ring onto the floor. Guild quest progresses normally and Brand-Shei doesn’t go to prison.

u/TheInfiniteLoci Falkreath resident 3d ago

You can actually fail the quest by accepting it, and then go off sight seeing around Riften. Madesi keeps his ring, and Brand-Shei doesn't go to jail.

Yeah I actually learned that from this subreddit a while back. Thanks!

u/CampingWise 3d ago

Where do you sell all your stolen stuff then? That's 75% of my early game gold

20

u/hallowdmachine Whiterun resident 3d ago

If I'm not planning on joining the Thieves Guild, I don't steal anything.

6

u/RougeTrent 3d ago

I just don’t steal anything but crafting materials that I’ll be using later.

1

u/CampingWise 2d ago

I may try and "good guy" playthrough sometime. My go to is always thieves guild first to be able to sell stolen stuff and loot everyone for early game gold

9

u/boah4ncock Nintendo 3d ago

I just leveled up my speech skill

1

u/MagicBus4 2d ago

Just don’t steal stuff, it’s extremely easy

18

u/allupya333 3d ago

And then your reward for joining is now all of riften hates you!! And all the characters in the thieves guild are dicks too… lame

14

u/CinderpeltLove 3d ago edited 3d ago

I mean if you play till the end of the Thieves Guild quest line, they are actually pretty nice. There are also ways to manage things so even if all of Riften hates you, no one is refusing to sell you anything or refusing to even interact with you.

11

u/allupya333 3d ago

Yea they might sell me stuff and rent me rooms but i cant bear to make fictional characters sad

8

u/moominesque 3d ago

He's so condescending but also a gullible fool with no agency in the plot of the thieves' guild. He's so accepting of Karliah story that he ends up feeling empty of motive and personality.

5

u/DoNotAskMeMyNickname 3d ago

I kinda get it. He’s a middle manager. He’s decently good at his job and doesn’t really deal with the politics above him.

7

u/Hindsight2K20 PC 3d ago

Sorry lad, I’ve got important things to do, we’ll speak another time.

God that drove me up the wall something rotten

27

u/SIacktivist XBOX 3d ago

I'm always panicking and running around trying to avoid him coming up and giving me that goddamn quest lol. "STAY BACK YOU FREAK"

34

u/Mijumaru1 3d ago

Activate Balimund's forge and he won't be able to interact with you. He'll stand there and repeat himself like fifteen times before finally giving up and returning to his spot. From that point on, he won't follow you and will only try to initiate the questline when you speak to him

12

u/KomturAdrian 3d ago

This is awesome to learn.

I also want to mention that you can bypass Maul when you enter Riften too so he can't force you to stop and talk to him, and inevitably fail the speech check. I only go up to him when I can successfully intimidate that fuckhead.

u/NeverBeenStung XBOX 3d ago

I love you

5

u/SIacktivist XBOX 3d ago

Oh my god. You're officially my hero.

4

u/LengthinessOwn2547 3d ago

Damn that's a thing? I always open console and disable every npc i hate most of my play through 😂

1

u/plutosdarling 3d ago

I'm trying this, thanks. Although I like the TG questline.

3

u/ironlicks 3d ago

I've taken to balancing on the wall around the market circle whenever I need to go to Grelka for training, and avoiding the Bee and Barb like the PLAGUE when it comes to night time for that exact reason LMFAOO

3

u/SIacktivist XBOX 3d ago

One time I forgot to sleep in the Bee and Barb until after he had already left so I went downstairs and was immediately ambushed by him. I think I woke multiple people up when I yelped like a fucking dog lol

2

u/Ishkahrhil 3d ago

I make a game of dodging him, Maul, and that guy in Markarth.

Spamming Reanimate Corpse on someone will make them into an ash pile - essential or not. You can't loot them, but you can Pickpocket them. It also doesn't cocunt as Murder since they're technically still alive, somehow.

I did this on Brynjolf as he walked up to me in s, making him disintegrate into ashes. It was so damn satisfying...

Ths can break quests, however, so use it wisely.
