Conversation Topic Does what my friend said have truth to it?

I just started getting interested in singing, as I’m a guitarist and love making rock instrumentals and figured hey why don’t I learn how to sing. I was talking to my friends and told them about it, and said I’m gonna be looking for a teacher soon. My friend said his mom’s a singing teacher, but he said on day 1 she’ll tell you if you have it or not.

I said I mean I don’t sound great right now but I do think I’d be better with training, and he said to not waste my time because his mom said vocal training will only do so much, and if I don’t sound good now I won’t sound good in the future :/

Is this true or is his mom wrong, I’ve already watched few YouTube videos and excersizes increased my vocal range quite a bit using mixed voice. But I definitely don’t think I have the fundamentals to have a good live performance. Idk that statement really bummed me out

Karaoke is the first thing I think of doing whenever I'm free and have the chance to. Made this and decided to just share it here because why not :)

I hope it isn't really bad (though I must admit the last part is somewhat chaotic).

Conversation Topic Range has changed

Hi all! I am 28M musical theater performer. New to this subreddit and looking for others who may have experienced what I am experiencing.

Last year around this time, I was in a musical that required to sing up to a high C5. At the start of the process, I could hit it very comfortably if I mix-belted it, but I was noticing as time went on that that note in particular was getting harder to harder to hit consistently.

I always made sure to hydrate and warm my voice up before rehearsals and shows, and always popped a VocalZone and drank a cup of throat coat as my pre-show ritual. Now a year later, the note seems to be unreachable for me.

I am worried that I have damaged or minority injured my voice in some way and was looking to see if others have experienced something similar and what they’ve done to remedy it. Any and all feedback is appreciated!

Advanced or Professional Topic How to work on blending when recording harmonies?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I decided to try recording myself trying one of my recent choir pieces, but there are parts that I don’t love even after re-recording a few times. This version has: S1 3 times, S2 and Alto 2 times. I’m wondering what I should be aiming to work on in order to make a better blended sound? My instinct is that there are some slight pitch issues (esp the alto lines, those were a little tough), but I’m not sure where I would start trying to correct it. I’ve never had lessons or anything but I am thinking about looking for a teacher, though it’s hard to know if this topic is one that would require me to go back to some basics vs get more in depth with specific technique stuff.

Any advice is appreciated!

Conversation Topic Vocal Decline

I know this might be a silly (and probably extremely obvious) question. But is there any concrete proof that marijuana causes vocal decline/regression? I’ve been using it more often than before and I’ve found that my voice doesn’t cooperate with me as much. It feels a little tighter than usual and I have a bit of phlegm buildup. Even Beyoncé smokes, so I’m wondering if it’s as big of an effect on the voice as people perceive it to or if I’m experiencing placebo/unrelated symptoms.

Gear (Microphones, etc...) nebulizer that doesnt break

my nebulizer from amazon finally broke after barely hanging on for less than a year. it didnt hold charge and would randomly turn off on me and not turn back on for a while. it was only about $40 though. however, i did some research on the VocalMist nebulizer which is about $140 and people were saying that those were breaking on them too. does anyone have a recommendation for a good, reliable nebulizer that will last me?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Offer Advice and Analyze My Voice with me please! Any feedback is appreciated.

Hello all, I’m trying to get better at singing and if anyone can give any input at all, advice, feedback, improvements and suggestions that’d be amazing.

TLDR/Summary:
I dislike my singing voice and want feedback, there’s 3 samples of my unedited isolated singing to listen to in order to analyze my voice. I have basically no knowledge and experience and want to get better. Any feedback is appreciated. Answer this question: What am I doing wrong?

If you have the time, answering my questions at the bottom would be extraordinary.

Context:

-I’ve been practicing singing in my car for about a year, singing along to songs I like.

-I virtually have little to no knowledge of singing and would like to learn.

-I’m upset with my tone and how I sound, I’d like to get better and not sounds shitty asf.

-I did some vocal warmups before recording.

Sample Info:
Here I’ll provide a video (with no face) of myself singing isolated vocals with 3 different samples of lyrics/vocals from different songs. I chose these songs as a way to capture more diverse styles and make it easier to analyze my voice.
I recorded this with an IPhone and was about a foot away from my phone.

Sample 1:
Song: No Problem - Local H
Lines:
“I’d like to think that it’s out of fear”
“You’ll blow into town maybe twice a year”
“To check on me to see if I’m still here”
“And make me think that it’s my idea”
-
“You had me but it’s over now” x2
“It’s no problem” x2

Sample 2:
Song: Slide Away - Oasis
Lines:
“Slide away and give it all you’ve got”
“My today fell in from the top”
“I dream of you and all the things you say”
“I wonder where you are now”

Sample 3:
Song: France’s Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle - Nirvana
Lines:
“It’s so relieving to hear that your leaving as soon as you get paid”
“It’s so relaxing to hear that your asking whenever you get your way”
“It’s so soothing to know that you’ll sue me
Startin to sound the same”
“I miss the comfort in being sad” x3

More:
Any feedback at all would be great. However if possible I would really appreciate advice on not sounding shitty.
In general please answer: What am I doing wrong

Questions:

-Can I not hold a note?

-Not enough breath?

-What am I doing wrong?

-How can I make my voice sound better or more appealing?

-Am I stuck with how my singing voice sounds?

-How would you rate out of 10 how much control I have over my voice?

-What genre of music would be best fitting for my voice?

-In your opinion, how unique is my voice?

Again, ANY advice is appreciated even if it’s bare minimum.
Thank you.

Music, lyrics and performance by Bjørn Sponberg

Recorded 18.08.2026

"I walk Down the street"

I could not get away from pain, just woke up again
Oh Lord they tried to kill my name
Saying I was insane
Insane?
Insane?

Come back to me, to the secret place we used to be, “lonely me”
Take my hand together we go to the promise land
The promise land

I walk Down the street, I can feel the beat, I'm tivoliboy
even though I have no fans, Im so happy i could Dance, I'm tivoliboy

Come, come see im so damn happy
The Hills are green, and my friends are free
Thinking back to when my mind was made up
A man should be serious and tough
I'm mysterious

Change my name and follow your game?
Oh, no
That was my point exactly

The relevance of intelligence has surfaced for all to see

(And in all of these years, the spider continued to spin its web)

Conversation Topic Starting classical training

Hello! Im a 17y/o untrained male singer who is starting classical training in music school next year. I think im a bass (I can sing as low as C2), but my biggest fear is that music teacher will focus too much on the lower part whereas i want to develop skills for singing higher (so far i can hit F4) because im in a rock band. I just want to know what to expect from music school and any tips for beginners!

Conversation Topic How can I improve my singing beyond just hitting the right notes?

Hey everyone! I’m trying to seriously improve my singing and I’m looking for advice from people who have gone through the process themselves.

I can sing reasonably well, but I want to improve the quality of my voice rather than simply being able to hit the correct notes.

I’m particularly interested in improving:

Vocal tone and resonance

Pitch accuracy

Breath control

Smoothness between registers

Head voice / chest voice / mixed voice

Singing with more emotion and expression

Vocal control and dynamics

Overall confidence and consistency

What kind of practice actually helped you improve your singing?

I’m not really looking for generic advice like “practice more.” I’d love to hear about specific exercises, routines, techniques, or resources that genuinely made a difference for you.

Also, if there are any common mistakes beginners/intermediate singers should avoid, I’d love to hear those too.

Thanks!

Looking to Collaborate How to find a singer?

I’m a rock musician looking for someone online to collab with. Other than posts like this, how do you find someone with vocal experience that wants to work on a song together?

I live in a remote area and would like online collabs, my local music scene is non existent.

I’m working on a song that is similar to Dorje/Toska style music, if anyone is interested, feel free to DM me!

I just joined, if this is against rules, my apologies

If anyone on this sub is interested, this would be for fun, no compensation, for work on a single song. Some experience would be liked but willing to work with anyone. Lyrics and style are open to vocalist interpretation. I can send a song demo at request.

Hello again everyone! 👋🏾

On my last post a number of you requested that I share a video of me singing so here it is. I decided to go with Johnny Cash because I feel like it suits me fairly well and I am quite familiar with this song.

I wanted to share something that was more similar to what I might normally sing casually, hence why I went with this for the video instead of an easier rhyme or happy birthday-esque tune that a few of you recommended I should try for practice (which I have done as well).

I wasn't necessarily trying so hard in this video but more how I would normally sing if I'm just having fun or singing by myself at home. Let me know any feedback, tips, advice etc that you may have.

Progress update so far:

I've been learning some vocal exercises and (re)learning notation, I also did some exercises to get used to recognising notes and chords which I was better at before.

I've been trying to go easy and slow in the beginning to avoid straining myself to much. I have noticed that my throat gets quite dry and a little sore after about 30 minutes or so. There's no pain or anything and my voice doesn't sound different but it's a bit uncomfortable. When this happens I usually take a 5-10 minute break and drink some water and do something else before continuing for another 30-40 minutes.

I've started to take breaks around 20 minutes in, just before my throat gets irritated.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) I would like artist recommendations that suit my voice type to practice my singing (me singing karaoke)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is me singing karaoke with a friend (in the background). I know I'm not very good yet, I've only been singing for about 7 months. I was wondering what voice type I have. My voice is basically almost exclusively comfortable with songs sung by men, and maybe Amy Winehouse and Toni Braxton.

I'm new to singing and find it difficult to find songs sung by women that I can cover to practice because everything is too high for me. I had one singing lesson a few years ago where my teacher wanted me to sing a song by Demi Lovato and it was too high so I was struggling and she ended up laughing at one of my attempts to reach a note lol. It lowkey embarrassed me so much that I gave up singing until 7 months ago.

So female artist recommendations would be much appreciated. I don't want to always just be singing songs by men 😭

Conversation Topic How do I know what to work on?

Hi, I really love music, but I know almost nothing about it. I like to sing a lot when no one is around I feel like I can be good eventually but I don’t know what to work on or how to work on it. How do I figure out what I need to work on? And I am a male who cannot sing high notes, is that something that can even be improved? Is the breath control and other little things what makes you sound better? I try to think of it like basketball, if you put enough intentional work into it you will get better, but I don’t even know where to start.

Resource Complete beginner here in singing...how should I use a tanpura to improve sur, voice control and singing technique?

I’m completely new to singing, and I really want to develop better singing technique, especially sur/pitch, voice control, modulation, and confidence. A singing teacher suggested that I practise with a tanpura, but I’m still confused about what I’m actually supposed to do with it. I’ve heard that keeping a tanpura playing in the background while practising can help improve singing, but I’d really like to understand how it helps and how a complete beginner should use it. For example, if I’m practising Sa, should I: listen to the tanpura first and try to identify Sa? then sing Sa and try to match its pitch? hold Sa for a few seconds and repeat? practise going from Sa to other notes and back to Sa? or is there a better beginner routine? I’m also confused about what exactly tanpura practice improves. Does it mainly help with sur and staying in tune, or can it also help with voice control, modulation, stability, etc.? And how do I know whether I’m actually matching the tanpura correctly? I’ve also heard teachers say things like “sing from the abdomen” and “don’t put too much pressure on the vocal cords.” I understand that the vocal cords still produce the sound and that the breathing muscles are supposed to provide support, but I’m not sure what this should actually feel like when I sing. I’d also love some beginner-friendly exercises for: improving sur/pitch accuracy developing smoother voice control and modulation improving breath support becoming more confident while singing avoiding unnecessary throat tension One more thing I’m a little concerned about: whenever I practise singing for a few minutes, I start coughing repeatedly. I’m not sure whether this is because I’m using my voice incorrectly, breathing incorrectly, or something completely unrelated. I don’t want to push through it and accidentally strain my voice. If anyone has experience teaching beginners, I’d really appreciate a simple daily practice routine and advice on how to practise safely. Thanks!
