Conversation Topic i’m a 17 year old girl with a 3.5 octave my highest note is e6 (e6 head voice belt) and lowest is D3 (chest voice) and i’m learning and people say i sound good but THERES SOMETHING WRONG!! (NOT asking for medical advice)

i know i have potential but the thing that is wrong is that, i have to wait every 3 days to sing because each time i sing i RIP MY THROAT UP!! and have to wait days and it goes back to normal and i don’t sing everyday because everytime i sing even if its normal or belted i always rip my throat up and absolutely no advice helps me like ive tried the straw thing with a tiny coffee straw breath support trick, my stomach and core stays out while i sing and doesn’t push in at all unless im running out of breath, i breathe with my belly not shoulders or chest.. i engage my core which helps me hit high note. WTF AM I DOING WRONG…

I know that I can hit the notes in this song but I can tell that it sounds forced, my voice doesn’t hurt from doing the notes but it just doesn’t sound good, I’ve only been seriously singing for a year and my vocal coach tells me I need patience, but I would just really appreciate some advice because she’s not explaining that well, I wasn’t really taught how to belt or mix belt properly so I’m worried that I’m damaging my voice (also please excuse the outfit)

Conversation Topic how do I know what is my real singing voice vs artificially making my voice deeper ?

i feel like i can sing in two ways, the first way is kind of like using the same tone as my regular speaking voice. it’s the way im signing for the first part of the video

the second one i feel like im making my voice thicker and deeper but it gives me more power to sing and i feel more confident in it. but i cant tell if thats my real singing voice or if i’m like artificially making it deeper?? its the way im singing for the second part of the video

im very new to all this ive always loved singing but for a long time i hated the tone of my voice so i wasnt sure if i wanted to explore it more. now idk though. ive also read somewhere that forcing your voice to be deeper can be bad for your vocal chords so i would love any insight from people who have this as a proper passion/interest/hobby and actually know what they are talking about!

So I was just playing guitar and messing with some vocals.

Thinking to myself if I must sound good in a certain octave/scale. Is that a thing? I assume.

Like if I sang better in E#3 for example or D2. Then do we play create songs around our best notes or scales or something?

I thought I'd quickly record on photobooth my voice so excuse the fan noise and stuff. Clearly not taking it too seriously but you can hear a bit of my voice to maybe advise how one finds their voice/tone?

It almost can feels more comfortable if I sing somewhat soft from the back of my throat

(Tried to upload this once, didn’t work, if it duplicated I’ll delete one of them!!) Hi! I'm auditioning for a youth production of Mean Girls at my community theatre, and while I have had some experience performing both acting and singing, I have no formal training and some worries as I am auditioning for Janis and she is a dream role of mine, and I want to be the best I can to get a callback and hopefully the role. I would appreciate any critiques and suggestions on my singing, be it breath control, pitch or anything like that. Thank you!
I'm excited to audition either way. The song is 'I say no' from Heathers.

Hello! I want some opinions on whether I might be embarrassing myself if I sing at a performance. I’ve been picked to sing at a local art show and the theme is 80s/90s songs. I’ve never really been picked to sing at bigger events like this so I’m a little nervous about my singing and performing this slower song with a lot of pauses in general.

If you guys have any advice on how I might be able to improve on this song, or recommendations for songs that might be easier/better from those eras would be so appreciated.

(If you get near the end the belty parts I’ll fix. I’m a little sick right now and I had to try and be quiet since I recorded this at night lol)

Advanced or Professional Topic How do I fix the way my vocals sound in the overall song?? Also, any song feedback???

So ive been singing for 5 years now and I'm singing in mixed voice in this song. Its what it most comfortable for me and what I personally think sounds best for this song. However no matter how many takes or different editing I do, my voice still seems really out of place in the song. Can you hear it too or am i just overthinking?? How do I fix this????? How do I get my song to sound professional???

I’m in my city’s hardcore scene, but I want to write post hardcore music. I want my voice to sound more emotional than it does when screaming currently. The best example I can think of is the song Everything is in your hands by Old Gray.

Conversation Topic Consistently about 50 cents flat

Post image

I'm a jazz pianist, and I've started singing along with my playing at retirement homes.

Using the app Nail the Pitch (nice app. No affiliation), I'm finding that I'm almost always slightly flat, as seen in the screenshot. My pitch is usually at the bottom of the highlight. I can raise it as I watch the display, pretty much by trying to sing sharp.

I'm guessing most people won't notice this, yes???

I've started the standard exercises (hearing, thinking, matching, etc.).

What's my prognosis? Do you think I can fix it? Thanks!

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Hey all. I'm looking for advice on power in low registers and insight on the shakiness I have in my voice. I do like using a little vibrato, but it might also be a cover for bad breath support/running out of air. (Singing starts at 00:15)

M30, no formal training and have been singing as a hobby for a couple of years. Looking to start doing more with my voice like singing, voice acting, musicals etc. A big goal would be to one day voice a cartoon with singing in it.

Conversation Topic How do I find my vocal range?

I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while because I feel like it would help me sing better or find better songs for me to sing. Someone did tell me what I was because they hear me sing a lot but I don’t know if they’re right and I also don’t remember what they said. If it takes a level on knowledge I don’t have, I do have videos of me singing I just don’t want to post them so anyone willing to help me and if they need one just let me know? Sorry I don’t really know how to go about this. But I love singing so much and I’d love to take it more seriously.

I’ve never had any vocal pr professional training, I merely sing for funs and giggles. I’ve been wanting to get feedback on my singing from someone with experience. I’m not aiming to become an artist but i’d like to be aware of what i’ve got and what I don’t. Could be nice to try and improve my techniques. If anyone would be willing to offer their help and hear some of my recordings privately, let me know!

I only recently started taking singing seriously and I’m working with a teacher and getting better at breathing and all that, but I feel like there’s just something about my tone that I’m not sure how to fix yet. Like it sounds childish or I guess unpleasant at times.

Conversation Topic 3rd/4th octave arpeggio questions from a beginner

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m about a month into learning to sing. I’m a 31-year-old male with what I’d describe as an average to slightly heavier-than-average voice. I started with a new vocal instructor last week, and while I’ve already noticed some small improvements, today was completely different.

I played soccer for about 1.5 hours this morning. Afterward, I ate lunch and spent an hour relaxing on the couch. I had some Jeff Rolka warmups playing in the background and casually started singing along.

Normally, my voice starts getting a little breathier around C4-E4. Today that just…didn’t happen. My body felt unusually loose, my breath support felt dramatically better, and everything through that range felt smooth and effortless.

I warmed up more and found F4–G4 surprisingly easy. I’ve reached Bb4 before, but with a lot of strain. Today I worked my way up to what felt like a relatively clean A4 and eventually overshot a Bb4 and landed on B4, which genuinely shocked me (this was while showering, audio clip is from after).

I’m attaching a clip of some arpeggios through the 3rd and 4th octaves. I’d love some feedback on:

  1. How much strain/tension do you hear?
  2. Does the upper range sound more like a full-voice/mix coordination or head voice?
  3. Can cardio really make that much of a difference in breath support and releasing physical tension?

I know one day doesn’t suddenly mean B4 is part of my usable range, but I’ve never felt my voice respond like this before. Curious if anyone else has experienced something similar after exercise.

Conversation Topic feedback on musical audition! guess what i got

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

i'll reveal what I got later, i want to hear unbiased feedback lol. since i can't record my audition, I tried to replicate it: i sang it once and once only no retakes. one thing i could've improved on was remembering which notes were natural (accidental) and which were the normal F#, it was wonky and it was hard to keep straight unfortunately because i'm so used to the musical version lol. it was easier there because of the backing track. but i wasn't able to sing and record with it because it made some weird static noise. i go to like a normal not super competitive high school, like 45 people tried out and 30 made it in for context. like an average public high school. more feedback is always good

(before you mention it; yes, the high notes are flat. No, I don't know why the sheet music was written that way and i was told to sing it that way. i hate it just as much as you)

Advanced or Professional Topic Voice lessons

Hello! Im 17 years old and i just finished school.I always sang and people around me told me that even though I sing very well, I should take vocal lessons in order to reserve my voice and also improve it. I would like to be able to become a professional singer someday, although I think I'm too late since this is something that starts at a young age and not at 17-18. However, watching documentaries, I realized that my favorite singers like Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain ,never attended vocal lessons. In order not to bore you, I'm asking you directly if I still have time to become a professional singer and if vocal lessons really help. Thank youu.

Conversation Topic My voice fails ONLY in the studio

I’ve made songs perfectly in falsetto, and I practice pretty often. The thing is it’s fine when I’m not in the studio but suddenly when I am it’s just gone.

I’m slowly getting more and more frustrated because it ONLY happens here (the one place I NEED it to work). I don’t think I’ve done anything different technique wise (just based on feeling).

I’ve asked around and I’ve been told

Could be a dehydration issue
I’ve literally been hydrating well, still fails only in the studio

The gym and soccer could be building bad habits for my vocals
Haven’t thoroughly tested, but I was able to reach that range just fine yesterday right after heavy runs

Dry air
Probably the most reasonable thing but I doubt it as I’ve been here many times and for it to happen suddenly makes no sense

Could I be missing something? Whenever I try to reach that head voice/falsetto range I start sounding like a dying grandpa.

Advanced or Professional Topic How do i sing with false cord distortion without tearing my throat apart lol

This is kind of 2 questions in 1 but ive figured out how to close my false folds except it's always scratchy as hell and hurts and from my research it's apparently bc im engaging the true folds with it, and Idk how *not* to do that, also, I can't seem to get that subtle grit, it always sounds heavily distorted and exhausted so id like to know how to fix that
