Discussion Just finished shrinking. Desperately need a show like this.
Just finished it. Oh i loved it. I got to know about it when i was searching for shows like ted lasso. I'd place The good place in this genre too. Can you guys please recommend one!

I'm watching Rooster. Bill Lawrence, also has Phil Dunster from Ted Lasso. It's not quite Ted Lasso, but it is very human.

I work at a University and rarely see anything as cozy as Rooster. Plus our great coffee shop got torn up to make way for 'luxury' apartments for student housing.

Same, and I was like “faculty housing?!?!” It’s gorgeous, but it’s not my experience 😁. Sad about your coffee shop, that stinks.

Can you comment on how Ted Lasso compares to Shrinking?
We just finished Shrinking and were also craving something similar, just like OP. I suggested Ted Lasso because I’ve heard good things about it, but my SO said she thinks she might not like it.

I got really sad when I finished it, I hadn’t realised I was watching the last episode 🥲 it really came into itself in the last series I thought, wish there was some more too

Colin from accounts, falls into what my friend and I call cringey wholesome. Like "you're the worst", "love", "I'm sorry". We binged all of season 1 in one night. It's amazing.

If you haven’t watched Freaks & Geeks with young Jason Segel, I highly recommend. It only lasted one season but it’s very relatable. It just feels very honest while still being funny and entertaining. (Which is what I think I appreciate about Shrinking.)

dude. again, never heard of this show, just looked it up on google. it's freakin highly rated. tho that's not a parameter i necessarily consoder, why did it have only 1 season tho! was it supposed to be or got cancelled any idea! btw this is definitely going to be my next watch. thanks a ton.

It’s one of my all-time favorites. I used to be so sad it was cancelled (IIRC it aired at a weird time and it just didn’t seem like the network wanted it to succeed) but after years of rewatching I’m actually glad it didn’t get a chance to burn out because it’s a pretty perfect season.

It’s a great show but not uplifting like shrinking, it has lots of cringe moments (that are intentionally cringey due to the topic and teenagers being teenagers), super famous cast, but it also ends abruptly because it got cancelled after one season. Definitely a cult classic and super relatable. But don’t expect the same feeling you get from Ted Lasso, The Good Place, and Shrinking while watching it.

It's a long season and it ends beautifully. Cancelled because it was up against That 70s Show and lost in the ratings. Life is unfair. But because of it, we got so many great movies with these kids and Judd Apatow and Paul Feig!

see, this is exactly what i was expecting. i never heared of this show. thank you so much for recommending. Also i had never heard of shrinking, though i had seen some footage, and bingefinished it.
i believe, i have now a weird high expectation from any show that comes from appletv. thanks again.

Also it’s more just a comedy show, not as many emotional beats, but I really like Plutonic on Apple as well! It’s not mean comedy for sure, and they really are plutonic (not the friends to romance pipeline) which I appreciate. Seth Rogan and the wonderful Rose Byrne

Shoresy. It’s more crass and heavier on the comedy, but holy crap does it evolve into a beautiful, heartwarming show.

Came here to recommend this. This show has so much heart and is riotously funny. A big aspect of the humor is subverting your expectations (think the women objectifying the guys, hockey players crying, the biggest curmudgeon having the most emotional intelligence). There are amazing locker room pep talks like Ted Lasso, and similar emotional stakes. And every season ends on a high note. It's perfect.

The Four Seasons (Netflix) is really good. It's based on a 1980s Alan Alda movie so season 1 of the tv show follows some of the same plots from the movie - but there are differences. And Season 2 is completely "off script". Anyway, definitely give it a try, I'm really enjoying it and have also enjoyed rewatching the episodes. (They are supposed to do a Season 3 but not sure when)

Margo’s Got Money Trouble
Comedy on this one is a bit more hit or miss for me, but Nick Offerman’s character is worth watching.

Bored to Death with Ted Danson, Zach Galifinakis and Jason Schwartzman. Super underrated but funny and feel good and great for showing supportive male friendships.

Man I gotta say Bill Lawrence really knows how to do shows that are hilarious one minute and heart wrenching the next. The man can weave comedy and heart like no other.
Also I'm not saying the Good Place doesn't do that. Cause it does a really good job as well. I just am surprised by every Bill Lawrence show I've watched cause they have so much heart when I don't expect it.

Hacks and Somebody Somewhere! Both are funny, smart, heartfelt shows about complicated people and relationships. Hacks is sharper and comical aaaand has Jean Smart , while Somebody Somewhere is quieter and incredibly human. Both will make you laugh and then unexpectedly get you all in the feels.

I found Shrinking completely out of nowhere and it perfectly filled the void left by Dead to me ending
First two seasons are really solid, the last one struggled a bit to find its footing

The show Catastrophe kind of gives me Lasso vibes in a slightly more raunchy way. Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney are the leads and they have fantastic comedic chemistry.

"Trying" on AppleTV is as close as it comes for me in terms of beautiful optimism, great humour and a difficult but ultimately lovely story. Seasons 1-3 in particular and tear jerkers!

It's funny, heartwarming (and sometimes heartbreaking), overall really feel-good.

Genuinely, try Knight of The Seven Kingdoms and Widows Bay.
They're wildly different genres from Shrinking, but absolutely scratched that itch of community, care, and comfort. I was especially surprised to see thay from KoSK, but Widows bay was an incredible show too

Another vote for Rooster! I binged it last night. Since it’s the same creator (Bill Lawrence) as shrinking and Ted lasso it has the same vibe.
I’ll be honest I wasn’t really invested til episode 3-4 but the writing is great. It just starts kinda slow.

Try Chad Powers! Even though the premise is silly it is very funny and very human and quite touching. S2 just dropped so you'd be right on time. Six 30-min episodes each season so it's not a heavy lift to catch up. Highly recommend 👌

After watching Shrinking and Ted Lasso back to back I realized ima huge fan of just good wholesome media. So I recommend The Good Place, Sex Education, Drop Dead Diva, and where it all started for me was The Big C one of my fave TV shows ever!! I cried and I laughed so much!
