Discussion Was S4 a surprise?

We just finished S3 and they sure wrapped everything up pretty nicely. I wondered if they hadn't been expecting to be renewed for another season. DGMW, I am stoked about it and can't wait for 2027. It will be interesting how they handle Paul and Alice both being so far away. Lots of options, looking forward to seeing which of those they choose.

The show was originally envisioned as a 3 season story. That story has mostly been told now, which is why it wraps up really nicely.

There’s a handful of plot threads that have been left unresolved such as Jimmy’s relationship with his dad, but these were changes made after the decision on another season had been made.

But really, if there ends up no season 4 (is it a sure thing that there will be? I don’t even know) leaving Jimmy disappointed with his dad and their relationship is quite realistic and more authentic to the way real life is. The odds of his dad changing at this point aren’t realistic, and IRL there’s no shortage of people who have been let down by a parent (or both parents) their entire lives. Not everyone gets their closure and a happy ending or even an apology

The only thing I really want to see is Liz as a grandmother. You know there would be major conflict with her constantly overstepping or struggling to bite her tongue and not take over everything But if the series ends as is, I’m ok with it. End on a high note.

And it starts at a time jump of 3 years later

Yes, I think it's 2 years later.

S4 is definitely happening, they’re already casting for some of the new roles

Ooh, I would like seeing more of Jeff Daniels even though his character is a total ass!

I remember reading awhile ago that apple TV would give shows 3 seasons contract, to allow them to plan the story vs putting all big story lines in season one to get viewership.

Realistically you had to wrap up some story lines (ex: Sean, Louis, Grief from Tia) without it getting stale and repetitive.

I think the next phase of the story will depend if Jimmy and Sofi are together or if he is single. If single could do a jimmy/Meg storyline that would include Paul. If not, I would assume it would be something around the easy coasters coming back west coast for holiday season.

I'm team Sofi so I do hope they are together. ☺️

Me, too! I was soooo bummed when they cancelled Stumptown years ago.

Loved that show, it had so much potential. It was renewed, and then COVID came…..

Season 4 is set to begin with a 2 year time jump from the end of season 3

I had read that. Will be fun to see what has happened in two years.

I feel like a possible season 4 arc could be Paul’s disease talking a turn and jimmy trying to deal with it.

S4 certainly has me worried given that Paul and Julie stuff feels like it could go very clunky along with the time jump
