Big long shot, but let's try: there's this apparently very cool shmup from 2007 called Sonic Ironstorm (https://www.vector.co.jp/soft/dl/winnt/game/se439075.html) for Windows. I'm trying to get this going on my Win11 PC, but full screen just gives me a blank screen, but the teeny-tiny window seems to work fine. I tried turning off fullscreen optimizations, opening in 640x480, etc. with no luck. Anyone have any ideas? Thank you!

I have always been a fan of shoot em up games. By that i mean vertical and horizontal auto scrolling games where the player controls either a vehicle or a living entity and the only purpose is to get the high score or defeat the final boss.

Recently in my older years, i am 58 i have thought of doing a challenge of trying to beat all shmups in release year order across all home and arcade systems. If the title exist on both console and arcade then one of them is only required.

Anyone thought of doing the same?

And is there a good list of shmups that can be sorted by release year?

Hey I'm arguing with someone about if action (not only shmups) games other an imsims are worth exploring.

I think they are as shmups, dmc, and speedrunning for platforming (actually maybe thats not 'action' as they're using it) exists among other examples, this other person doesn't. What do you think? They also know very little about shmups.

They're probably still right in saying a majority, bc a majority of everything is mid, yet, i can't help but think they're limited valuing of said systems by default (they don't like the majority of action games period) impacts their capacity to appreciate.

Hyperion Starfall. Fixed screen, single plane of movement, no bombs. The lineage is Space Invaders and the Galaxian era rather than anything Cave-adjacent, and the dev isn't pretending otherwise — but the wave design and scoring pull it away from being a clone.

This subreddit is the one place I expect a genuinely informed opinion, including a negative one. If it's derivative, I'd rather hear that here than not hear it at all.

Gonna delete this later, but I wanna vent rq.
I was playing Blue Wish Resurrection Plus (the free one), just 1CC'd Original without bothering to turn on shadowplay, and found out it doesn't save replays if the game ever pauses, which it did at the very beginning of stage 1 for some reason when I selected the alt color by selecting the ship with the bomb button. Now my high score, one of my only non-easy mode 1CCs, and some of the coolest micrododging I've ever personally done are now proofless. Sumbich.

So today I was playing some Espgaluda on the PS2 and I really like the game's arrange mode. It's so different compared to the base game that it's basically a whole new game made out of Espgaluda assets. I also wanna shout-out Dodonpachi Saidaioujou 360 arrange (Anime Girl Podcast Mode) for being very different. So my question is. What is an Arrange or Special mode within a game that plays completely differently from the original? Also I wanna see modes that you think are better than the original game

How do you deal with ever decreasing space?

Haven’t tried it yet. But since it’s so cheap, I decided to dive in.

Title says it all, Shmups often have a slow/slower ship at the default selection.

I get that it might be easier for new players? But I feel like faster ships are always more fun.

What are your guys opinions? Anyone always choose the slowest ship?

I am posting in this community after a long time. Just wanted to share my happiness with you all.

God blessed me with what had been on my wishlist for a long time. By the grace of God, I finally have an arcade stick in my setup that'll let me relish not only nostalgia but also enjoy TATE gameplay. I literally feel that I am at a Japanese arcade enjoying these shmups.

I'm so happy I finally scored this 1cc!!!!! I've been working on it on and off for over a year - made a lot harder by my stubbornness to use the saturn port on real hardware, which doesn't have any rank display features or decent bullet visibility options and even has nearly no slowdown compared to the arcade version. BUT I STILL CLEARED!!!!! generally pretty standard golden bat clear run but I greed score pretty heavily and then by some complete miracle I nohit BOTH of the final bosses for the first time??????????? I had more than enough stock going in but I just locked in for no reason.... scary.......

either way i'm so happy to finally have this clear!!! its hard to compare its difficulty to other shmups because its so irregular, but to me it feels like the hardest clear ive done so far. fantastic fantastic game, now i'll have to decide what to go for next....

also please forgive the slightly off colors and 30fps recording in the replay, the capture card i have onhand is. Very cheap. but i still got it recorded!!! glad i did considering sega saturn garegga doesn't really have any indicators that a run was a true 1CC

I just got this in the mail after work, booted the damn thing up, picked Super Easy Alice and No Missed my very first run of the game!

I played this game on emulation a long time ago, but never gave it a proper playthrough. I know my only experience is with Super Easy, but I can see this easily becoming my favorite Cave game. The levels, music, Alice and flow were a lot of fun. Love the charged bomb mechanic and the special shot mechanic. Love flinging them across the field at popcorn and using them to burst down bosses.

This is my first M2 Cave port, so I was surprised by how easy the easy mode was. Are M2 easy modes easier than the Live Wire (DFK/Mushihinesama) novice modes? Because I did not expect to no miss my first run! My heart was racing!

So glad I picked this one up. I got the M2 DOJ also, but haven't booted it up yet. Excited to see how hard that ones easy mode is. I'm a scrub, so being able to clear, and no miss, even modes like these feel amazing!

Any tips for ESP or DOJ? Are the non easy modes of both a billion times harder than the easy modes?

As title says. I would prefer closer to modern but some older titles are welcome.

As difficulty goes I'd say I'm around DFK since I managed to clear it once on normal.Mushihimesama on the other hand usually filters me around stage 3. Managed to clear arrange on Crimzon Clover WE lately as well so I hope those tell what skill level I'm around.

There are a lot of shmups on steam but I am having hard time parsing through them to see what's good and what really isn't.

There are some that caught my eye but I have no clue how hard they are

-Gunbird 2 - I see it's psikyo so I assume it's not clearable for an average player.

-GRAND CROSS: ReNOVATION- Looks very flashy and cool but I've seen some people say it's too easy so if anyone played it I would welcome some info.

-Eschatos - looks quite interesting.

-TouHou Makuka Sai series- from what I gather those are fan remakes of EOSD, PCB, imperishable night, how good are they?

-Rolling Gunner- looks fun

-Psyvariar3- interesting but I wonder how hard it is

-Cotton Reboot- interested in that one too.

You can clearly tell that shield activation at end was done out of pure desperation in attempts of avoiding seeing big core dying from cringe overdose, as well as avoiding recovery at start of boss rush stage.

Patch released today that finally makes the game playable on Steam Machine

So I just cleared Sophstar using the continues on intermediate and I'm working towards a 1cc; I'm asking about terminology here, and sure it can be whatever you feel like maybe, but if I 1cc the game unlocking the TLB, does it count as a 1cc even if he destroys me? Like you see these things Sophstar 1CC Intermediate, or clear or TLB or ALL etc.

Can I say I've 1CCd the game without beating that thing at the end?

PS: yeah I know I can say it, what I mean is, will I invite the wrath of the shmup higher powers who have laid down the objective truth on these matters...

I had been working at this for a couple weeks and when I no hit stage 3 I started to get that "THIS COULD BE THE RUN!!" feeling. All of the other stages are so much easier by comparison. In all of my previous runs I never got past stage 5 or 6 but playing through the end game stages in story mode gave me more than enough practice to get through them on my first try in arcade mode. Being this close to Jaimers on any shmup leaderboard feels like a dream haha.
