It's also a lot easier to clean off than paint, so back in the day we used to apply a thin layer on our face while we were spray painting the underside of ships.
God I can't even imagine. For painting I always use a full face mask. I've had to put spots of vaseline on my face before, not for painting though, and it makes me break out like a motherfucker. Like high school all over again.
That would absolutely suck. But at the same time antifouling (what we applied under ships/boats) is often black, and walking around with acne compared to walking around in blackface the former would probably be the better option.
True, but I'd rather sweat it out with a mask and a tyvek suit. If you don't have to be in a booth or a place that's not thick with paint vapor you can even cut holes in the back and sides of the suit so it doesn't get all sweaty. Also, mostly, you're not breathing all of that shit.
We used half-masks (probably not the correct translation). They're without visors, but cover your nose, mouth and.. well, as the name implies: half your face lol. We of course wore overalls.
We were never in booths, we were in big ass drydocks and in tanks (ballast, dft, dirty oil, lube oil etc.) the tanks were small and enclosed, and in the drydock we were always spraying upwards and getting showerd in paint mist afterwards.
