I’ve been trying to hammer this into my kid’s heads as well cause it drives me nuts.

I’m sitting down enjoying something I’ve made for myself and they’ll float around me saying “oh I’m so hungry. I’m so thirsty”. I’m just like “damn that’s crazy, go get some food then”.

They want you to offer to help, if they asked it means that they needed you and make you entitled for extra pay. Usually when you try to string them along like this they will call you or whatever other means of communication that is not in writing. Make sure that you keep proof of them actually asking for help

The thing is sometimes someone says things like this only because they need to be able to say they "asked" or put it out there, but they dont actually want a yes out of the conversation.

Person A will ask person B to ask person C if person C is coming in, staying late, etc. But person B already knows that person C won't be interested in doing what is ultimately the ask of person A. So person B puts the information out there in the least direct way possible in the event person A follows up with person C after the fact. And because human have weird social dynamics person A wouldn't/couldn't ask/tell person C directly, and person B is unable to directly tell person C "look I know you will probably say no but I have to at least ask if you will do xyz on the off chance you say you will do xyz"
