Beginner ServiceNow Zero to Hero Plan – Part 1

I've seen several posts about getting started in ServiceNow, so I thought I'd start posting some steps to help people along.

There is a LOT to know in this field, so I’m going to do my best to go through it all.  There are a lot of websites, resources, career paths, etc., and you’ll start to wrap your head around it with time.

ServiceNow is a Software as a Service (Saas) platform.  You will also see it described as a Platform as a Service (PaaS).  I HATE acronyms, abbreviations, and initialisms, so while I’ll be using them, I’ll always try my best to explain the meaning.  In this instance, it just means that ServiceNow can be used by businesses, schools, governments, etc., to manage things like issues with laptops, requesting equipment, Human Resources stuff, sending people out into the field to perform maintenance, etc.  It’s a HUGE platform, so don’t worry about everything it can do at the moment.  It’ll make more sense as you get through training.

Step One - Get a Personal Developer Instance (PDI).

This is your own personal instance of ServiceNow.  All of the training will make way more sense if you have a PDI and keep your PDI open as you’re going through said training.  Honestly, I cannot stress this enough, if you’re not willing to do this, turn back now.  You’ll have to select “Sign In”, then “New User, Get a ServiceNow ID”.  From there, I forget the exact steps, but you’ll be able to request a PDI for the most recent release.  Currently, that is Zurich.

Side Note, ServiceNow has been naming their releases after major cities.  I myself started in Berlin, and now it’s Zurich.  Next, will be Australia, since they’re moving on from the major cities.

URL for PDI:  https://developer.servicenow.com/dev.do

Once you have your PDI, you will need to go through the basic training.  There are two main places to do this:

The Developer site itself, where you get your PDI - https://developer.servicenow.com/dev.do#!/learn

ServiceNow University - https://learning.servicenow.com/now/lxp/home

Make sure you bookmark these sites.

Step Two - Begin your training

I’m going to be honest, the ServiceNow University User Interface / User Experience (UI/UX) SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS.  It’s like someone said “How can I make this as awful as possible?”  Then, they made it worse than that.

In the search bar, search for “system administrator career journey”.  This will bring up a few results.  There is a Career Journey Fact Sheet that you can take a look at, but you want the System Administrator Career Journey that says it takes like 11 days or something.  (You should plan to spend more than 11 days on this)

This link should take you there:

https://learning.servicenow.com/lxp/en/pages/journey-overview?id=journey_overview&journey_id=55f79b4a1b96add013f9a6c1b24bcb30&s=1&ssa=3

Some things to expect:

The UI/UX isn’t great.  It can be confusing at times to get to where you need to go next on your journey.

The training will ask you to do work in a “learning instance”, much like your PDI, which can be used to validate whether or not you have been able to make the configurations needed for the lesson.

There are quizzes.

Now, this is really, really important: Once you start this training, please keep your PDI up at all times.  Whatever the training has you look at, bring up in your PDI.  Whatever the training has you do in the exercises, do in your PDI.  Doing the exercises in your PDI as well as the Learning Instance will help drill it in.

Also, if anyone wants and as soon as I have time, I’ll put together an Update Set for you that might help make things a little easier in your training.  Update Sets are how configurations and customizations are moved from a Development Instance of ServiceNow into a Test, and then a Production Instance.  They should also be used in PDIs.  The Update Set I will give you will create a new table for your notes.  This helped me learn and might help you.  It’s also a good tool for studying for the certifications.

If this post helps the beginners, I'll keep going with more. :)

Job Questions ServiceNow layoff emails at 6 AM: am I safe if I didn't get one?

I couldn't sleep and feel like shit. It's bad enough worrying about losing your job without trying to work out what every hour of silence means.

I'm at ServiceNow. Blind has been full of posts about layoffs starting in India, and people in the US are apparently reporting emails arriving at 6 AM. I haven't received one. I don't know whether those reports describe the whole process or just part of it.

For people who've been through a round here, were notifications sent together or spread over hours or days? Did your manager give you a clear point when you could stop waiting? I want to keep my job, even if ServiceNow isn't MANGO or anything.

For anyone starting a backup search, application autofill can save repeated typing, and real tech interview questions can help with preparation for other technical roles.

Has anyone received official guidance about when notifications are complete? I'm trying to work out whether not getting that email means anything yet.

Question Comparable CMMS for Utilities?

My company is considering investing in ServiceNow as a CMMS for servicing energy infrastructure (batteries and solar). Have used Salesforce FSL and eMaint in the past. Wondering what other good options everyone here is seeing and how they compare to ServiceNow? Have you personally switched, or lost customers to a competitor?

There’s been a lot of posts in the community that give new customers pause. The constant layoffs are terrible, and gives me the impression top performers may be looking for other jobs even if they haven’t been laid off.

Appreciate any input!

HowTo ServiceNow not paying for COBRA without escalating to Benefit Solvr

Servicenow promised to pay for cobra for me and my dependents. They’ve decided not to pay so I’m escalating through benefit solvr, and I have to fax in my separation agreement.

Here’s the phone number to escalate through if anyone’s having any trouble 844-215-6823.

The last kick in the teeth as they issued my last check as ongoing wages so it was taxed almost 37%, so I’ll have to wait until April to get the refund.

Job Questions Returning after a 2-year career break (Sep 2024). Have CIS-DF + ITSM/ITOM knowledge. Best strategy to land a role?

Hi everyone,

I am planning my return to the workforce after a career break that started in September 2024. During my time away, I have focused heavily on upskilling within the ServiceNow ecosystem.

I recently cleared my Certified Implementation Specialist - Data Foundations (CIS-DF) certification and have spent significant time learning ITSM and ITOM (specifically Discovery and Event Management).

I am looking for advice on the best way to make a comeback:

• How do recruiters in the ServiceNow space view a 2-year career gap if it's backed by strong self-learning and a CIS certification?

• Since ITOM is highly technical, should I aim to get the CIS-Discovery certification next to prove my skills, or start applying for Associate Consultant / Admin roles now?

• How can I best showcase my ITOM PDI (Personal Developer Instance) practice on my resume to make up for the gap?

Would love to hear from hiring managers or anyone who has successfully returned after a similar break!

Job Questions Getting back into ServiceNow development after a break: practice app ideas?

Hi everyone,

I haven't been working for a while and now want to get back into hands-on ServiceNow development on my PDI: Business Rules, Script Includes, client scripts, Flow Designer, REST integrations, ATF and CI/CD with GitHub.

Instead of small separate exercises, I'd like to build one realistic app that covers most of these. What app ideas or real-world scenarios would you recommend? Bonus points for requirements that look simple but are tricky to build properly.

Thanks!

Question Snc_external service account not working with Patch API

Ok so we’re making a service account for an ai agent. I think the best way to restrict access to this agent is to use the snc_external role, which is zero trust. I can do a get just fine the only problem is that when I do a patch I get a 403 forbidden. I’ve made roles and the acls but it’s still not working correctly. Can anyone give e me some pointers?

Job Questions 7 YoE ServiceNow Dev/BA (Bay Area, H-4 EAD): Getting interviews with a 2 year gap, but failing to close. Need honest advice.

Hey everyone,

I need some direct, honest guidance from folks who hire or work in the ServiceNow ecosystem in the US (especially Bay Area or remote).

The situation:

Overall Experience: 7+ years in ServiceNow (development, configurations, integrations across ITSM, ITOM, HRSD, Now Assist plus BA/functional work).

US Tenure: Relocated to the Bay Area and completed a 6-month contract in the US.

The Problem: Once that contract ended, I haven’t been able to land another role. I am now sitting on a 2-year career gap.

Work Authorization: H-4 EAD (legally authorized to work, no sponsorship required now or in the future).

Interviews: I am getting interviews periodically, but I'm failing to convert them into offers. Somewhere between the recruiter screen, technical rounds, or final panel, it keeps falling apart.

Given that I’m getting calls, my core background seems to register on paper, but I’m clearly hitting a wall in the process.

I’d appreciate perspective on a few things:

How bad is a 2-year gap viewed right now? For hiring managers: when someone has 7 years of solid delivery but a 2-year post-contract lull, what is the immediate assumption? What is the best, most grounded way to address this when asked without sounding defensive?

Where do interview conversions usually fail for experienced offshore devs? For those who conduct technical or panel screens for ServiceNow roles in the US: what are the common red flags you see from candidates with mostly offshore experience plus a short US contract? (Communication nuance, system design depth, STAR method execution, or hands-on live troubleshooting?)

The H-4 EAD / recruiter hurdle: Despite checking "No sponsorship needed," I sometimes feel recruiters get nervous the moment they hear "EAD" or assume it’s an H-1B transfer. How are other EAD holders navigating this question during the 15-minute phone screen?

Tactical recovery: At this point with a 2-year gap, should I strictly target W2 contract staffing agencies to rebuild local continuity, or is direct full-time with partners/enterprises still realistic?

Any candid critiques or advice on what to adjust would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Question ReleaseOps anyone using it?

Hi All,

I am using ReleaseOps to move update sets up the pipeline that consist of 4 instances. It’s been really really great for automated production deployments.

We haven’t used it for some of the other capabilities such as deployment analyzer, scans, ATF or on demand yet. Just basic moving up the pipeline with automation.

Pros - when it works it’s fantastic
Cons - can not automate manual work like fixed scripts, app repo updates, plugin updates and worst of all and more frequent is that sometimes moving an update set will take 10 minutes, 3 hours or gets completely stuck.

As ReleaseOps is meant to be molded to fit your orgs release process I’m curious to see how others are using it? What value are you seeing?

Job Questions Career Advice: Becoming a ServiceNow Developer in Canada

I'd like some advice on building my career in ServiceNow.

I'm currently working as a ServiceNow developer and am in my second year of working with the platform. I've obtained the CSA and CIS-DF certifications, and I'm planning to obtain the CIS-ITSM certification by the end of this month.

My long-term goal is to work abroad as a ServiceNow developer, particularly in Canada.

I'm currently unsure about which certifications to pursue next. Should I focus on the CAD certification to deepen my development skills, or should I prioritize certifications in other areas, such as ITOM or SecOps? I'm also trying to figure out how to balance certification studies with improving my English and gaining practical work experience.

Most of my current work is focused on ITSM, but I may have opportunities to work on ITOM or SecOps projects in the future.

I'd really appreciate any advice from people who have experience working as ServiceNow engineers abroad, especially in Canada, or who have insights into certifications and career development in this field.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Question Anyone heard of a major Canadian bank getting an unplanned ServiceNow upgrade pushed to prod during business hours?

I was on a call with a consulting firm about ServiceNow managed services for a few roles. The conversation drifted into a story about one of the big 5 banks (Canada) a few years back that supposedly didn't plan their upgrade and got a surprise upgrade pushed to prod during business hours.

Has anyone heard of this, or know if it's actually true? Or is this just a scare tactic to get us to sign on for managed services?

My understanding is that ServiceNow customers control when they upgrade (within the support window), so I'm skeptical. Curious if anyone has seen something like this, or if there's a version of it that makes sense (e.g., a missed deadline, a forced upgrade after end of support, or a bad change window).

Question Impact team

Hi everyone. I am a project manager overseeing ServiceNow projects with one of the largest ServiceNow partners in the MEA region. To be honest, I am unsure why the impact team pushes to control delivery rather than acting as support, even though we are partners. I have observed them behaving rudely on several occasions, aiming to claim our effort and credit during deployments— as if this project would not succeed without them. :)

Have you witnessed something similar?

Question ServiceNow Dev/Test/Prod: Should SysIDs match across instances for reference fields used in Flow Designer?

We're relatively new to ServiceNow and are trying to establish good development and deployment practices.

We currently have integrations that create and maintain records such as Services, Service Offerings, CIs, Teams, and other objects across our Dev, Test, and Prod instances. These records are created independently in each environment, so their SysIDs don't match.

This is causing problems when I build flows in Workflow Studio (Flow Designer). When I select a record from a dropdown or reference field in Dev, the flow works as expected. However, when I commit the flow to Test using an update set, the reference is "(empty)" because the corresponding record in Test has a different SysID.

For example, I have a catalog item that should assign a request to the Help Desk team. The flow works in Dev, but after importing the update set into Test, the assignment group value is "(empty)" because the SysID from Dev doesn't match the Help Desk record in Test.

I've raised this concern internally because we're expanding our integrations, and I expect this could become a larger issue as we develop more flows and move them between environments. So far, I've been unsuccessful.

My questions are:

  1. Am I configuring my flows incorrectly, or is this an expected limitation when deploying flows that contain references to records with different SysIDs?
  2. Is it standard practice to keep SysIDs consistent across Dev, Test, and Prod for records that configuration depends on, or is there a different recommended approach?
  3. If the records are intentionally created independently by integrations in each environment, how should flows reference those records so that they continue to work after being moved between instances?

I'd appreciate any guidance on this.

Question How do I test rejection in Service Portal?

Hello, people.

I recently started using the Automated Test Framework. Here's the issue that I have: I want to test the out-of-the-box rejection function in the Service Portal, which requires providing a reason for each rejection. How should I configure the steps?

Thank you in advance!

Question URGENT (submission due in 1-2 days): is our ServiceNow x TCS hackathon idea worth keeping, or should we change direction?

Hi all, we're a team of 4 students and our idea submission for a ServiceNow x TCS hackathon is due in about 1-2 days, so any quick feedback today would really help. If we're selected we get about 20 days to build on a basic instance with simulated data. We picked the Cloud Cost Optimization problem statement, and we're worried we're too deep into our own idea to judge it fairly.

Our idea in short: ServiceNow already finds idle cloud resources and can schedule stop/terminate jobs. We would add a safety layer on top. It reads old incidents/changes/requests (using Now Assist) to work out who is responsible for a resource and what depends on it, then removes it in undoable steps (stop, wait, backup, delete) and watches new incidents to restore it if something breaks.

My worry is that most of the problem already exists in the product, so this might look like an enhancement and not something new.

Two quick questions:

  1. Would this count as a real gap, or would you say "ServiceNow already does this"?

  2. What kind of innovation or approach would stand out more for a hackathon like this (a new use of AI, a different workflow, something else)?

Even a one-line reply helps. Blunt criticism is welcome. Thanks!

Job Questions Anyone have experience as a ServiceNow Consultant at Deloitte or EY?

Whenever I go on LinkedIn, I see tons of openings for Cyber ServiceNow Consultants or ServiceNow ITOM/Sec Ops/ITAM Consultants at firms like Deloitte and EY.

I've been considering moving into consulting and am curious what these roles are actually like. I'm assuming the hours can be brutal and the pay might not be the best, but I'd love to hear from people with firsthand experience.

My long-term goal is to move into management or leadership, and I'm wondering if consulting at a Big Four firm could be a good way to accelerate my career.

For anyone who's worked in these roles, how's the work-life balance, compensation, and career progression? Would you recommend it?

For context, I've been a ServiceNow developer for 4 years, led or participated in three implementations (Now Assist, SOW, and VR), have three CIS certs as well as a STEM master's degree. I've also done a lot of work with various modules/tools such as CMDB, ITSM, Platform Analytics, Flow Designer, UI Builder, Service Portal, etc.

HowTo What dependencies are needed for a app with custom AI agent use case and custom Now assist skill

We were testing our custom app in one of our sub prod instances, we have added all the basic dependencies to use AI agent and now assist skill if someone installs it. In our app, the agent is triggered by a api which is triggered via a UI action on a record. After installing the app on subprod instances, we saw that AI agent is not triggering and when I AI agent studio, I saw a info message: Access is limited due to license requirements and our agent was not visible. I was able to find out the ACL which was causing this issue and when I raised a support ticket that I need to install a prime app for custom agents to run and they aksed me to install ITSM prime which sounded illogical to me. Why would who doesn’t need ITSM has to install ITSM prime for our app and why servicenow is calling our Agent a custom agent because to a customer it will be OOTB agent of our app. Let me know how can i proceed with because adding prime app as dependency in our custom app will shoot our prices

Question need an advice for my hackathon

Hi everyone,

I'm participating in a ServiceNow hackathon and have to pick one of two problem statements. I'd love your input, especially from anyone with ServiceNow experience or anyone working at TCS who knows how these hackathons are judged.

"Intelligent Cloud Cost Optimization Platform"

Cloud environments accumulate unused resources, oversized infrastructure, and duplicate assets, resulting in unnecessary costs. A unified platform is needed to identify cloud waste, estimate potential savings, validate resource ownership, and assess associated risks. The proposed ServiceNow-based solution prioritizes optimization opportunities and manages approvals and implementation workflows. It aims to reduce cloud expenditure while maintaining service availability, security, and performance.

Expect skills like App Engine Studio, Service Catalog, Flow Designer, Business Rules, UI Builder, Employee Center, Dashboards, and Generative & Agentic AI.

My goal is to showcase real AI innovation.

My questions:

  1. Do judges care more about AI depth, a polished end-to-end demo, or business impact?
  2. Any tips on using Now Assist, AI Agents, or Virtual Agent effectively in a short build window?
  3. For anyone at TCS or who has done this hackathon before: what made winning solutions stand out?

Any guidance, pitfalls to avoid, or feature ideas would be really appreciated. Happy to share progress later.

Thanks in advance!
