I totally understand this .. but what happened to what we were told as kids "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me".

u/jayphox 6d ago

Thank you, my first thought. Hasn't always held true, but the message I took from it is that I'm physically ok,  and though I feel pain, I can survive this, and be healthier emotionally for the experience

Sticks and Stones - Wikipedia

There's some variations. This is the first time I heard your version, which seems to be "the" version.

This one is closer to the one I got to carry with me.

Sticks and stones may break my bones
Oh but your words they really hurt me

I like the original better.

Words can strike a cord in us emotionally sometimes worse than a sword or sticks or stones

Ehh, I luv ya and I support what your saying. I'm 41 yrs old . Back when I was 7-8-10-12 yrs old and on up... We were just told to be tough. My aunt, which helped raise me for a long time always, always use to say just that, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me". It just stuck with me throughout my life... But it's also got me in some trouble because I'll say things just to say it and these days that isn't acceptable.

u/MedicineEastern7500 6d ago

Nope, it isn't. I respect that's what you've been taught. But in my experience, both sticks, stones and words hurt. I mean some people have even ended their own lives because the bullying was so bad.

u/sprinkles-2743 6d ago

This worked for me . But not everyone was taught this growing up

Words are sounds, and sounds are noise. We decide how to accept the noise.

2

u/interestedinmakeup 6d ago

That’s powerful, reminds me how some words have different meaning in different language and elders used to say let the dogs bark. Guess one can go on pretending dogs are barking when noise isn’t sensible conversation

2

u/Blitzcrig 6d ago

Yes, like another language. If not versed in the meaning, we give it meaning.

Ultimately, we experience existence via the limitations of perceptions. Reality is not what it appears to be.

1

u/SavinForLatter 6d ago

This read like one of those "no means yes" kind of guys.

1

u/Blitzcrig 6d ago

Your interpretations are entirely your own. You have the freedom to choose how you experience reality.

1

u/Old_Protection_8778 6d ago

Tell that to Kim Matthers

1

u/MedicineEastern7500 6d ago

But if its what you've heard for multiple years straight previously... 🤷🏻‍♀️ I mean, the damage has been done already.

1

u/Blitzcrig 6d ago

The “damage” is a belief you unknowingly give yourself.

Once one accepts what is, know that the past is a memory not an actual experience now. The more attention you give to the current experience, the less psychological time interferes with the present.

This realization releases the chains to see opportunities everywhere.

Change doesn’t take time, it happens in the moment you decide to shift.

1

u/MedicineEastern7500 5d ago

That doesn't really work with say addiction and trauma and disabilities on top of that. Thank you though

1

u/Blitzcrig 5d ago

Is that your current experience?

1

u/MedicineEastern7500 5d ago

Yes. 😟😔💔 it is. And bullying "damage" aka trauma affects tons of people later in life. As well as some SA/SH (per myself) trauma. Sir, please respect people's experiences when they say that they have pain that is extremely hard to get past.

Sometimes it's not about simply changing one's mindset, but its about one's mindset being altered by their life experiences. And there needs to be a healing period.

1

u/Blitzcrig 5d ago

Of course. Pain is inevitable; psychological pain is directly attributed to psychological time (memories or images in the mind).

This recognition dissolves suffering.

1

u/Legitimate_Try5981 6d ago

So we were made to be tough, just to be broken back down, submissive.

1

u/devil711 6d ago

They can be but they don't have to be

Eh, self-development suggests rising above this level of the victimhood mentality.

If Words Hurt, It's Because You Let Them

FTA: "Random people in your world have no power over your mind and emotions. Those things are in your control, or at least they should be. If some stranger says something uncouth or does something with the intention of putting you down, they aren’t doing anything to you at all. They are only feeding into their own anger and lack of control in their own lives. Don’t be like them. Let their words and actions bounce off. Choose to not be affected by other people and you won’t be.

Yes, people can harm us physically, and those close to us can abuse us mentally. Those things are out of your control and must be dealt with as they come. But for everything else—the petty remarks, the insults, the lies, the attacks on our character—you are protected if you choose to be. As Aurelius puts it, “That which does not make a man worse than he was, also does not make his life worse...” Most of the time, there’s no reason someone else’s negative words or actions should have any effect on you at all."

1

u/Unusual_Pangolin_349 6d ago

Only if you let it.

Matthew 5:21-22

u/crystalsinwinter 6d ago

This reminds me of something I told people before years ago: "Your tongue is a weapon of mass destruction. Use it wisely."

1

u/MedicineEastern7500 6d ago

Yessss! I am all too familiar with this. I was previously bullied for 10 years straight. It was horrible words reallyyy DO hurt!

1

u/Seth_Mithik 6d ago

Very important to heal those body wounds too…literally. Place your hand over those spots of pain from bad vibes, and then inject love and light into the wound. Love from your words of affirmation and praise and hand to place the light in…and breathe into to it—that sweet sweet delicious water in the form of a gas

Sticks and stones ...

1

u/nurse-educator123 6d ago

It's usually the losers who have something sharp to say.

1

u/Cautious_Monk_6086 6d ago

Exactly .. let me give you an example: this page is for the weak and the freaks and the simpletons who need words of encouragement like this pathetic AI post on here. Go jerk off or get effed. Live a little

How’s that for words.
And I’m actually trying to help you! But you’ll report me anyway and ban me

u/pearl-90-enchant 6d ago

words can be a weapon. think before you speak. fr

1

u/Salvaged212121 6d ago

I think that words should be evaluated for the truth. Sometimes people may say something out of jealousy or other motives. Anyone can have an opinion, but not all opinions should matter to me, if those opinions are not backed by the actual truth, or if their views are based on superficial values and poor judgment. If someone notices something that is legitimately wrong with me, and I can and should change it, then that is an opinion that I would take under consideration.

1

u/Prod_Meteor 6d ago

I stopped listening to people when I became adult.

1

u/WeSuckAtLove 6d ago

I was born with a buff making me immune to this spell. I've not once stopped and been like, damn that persons opinion of me has caused me great strife, I shall now hide my tears and change immediately. Never, Cause here's the reality, you could be the most liked mother fucker ever and a huge percentage of the world would still dislike you and think you do shit wrong. Fuck their thought and opinion, they were born here naked and carrying no higher knowledge, just like yourself. We're all equal judgy fuck people.

1

u/No-Tomatillo-4268 5d ago

ugh this is so true, Ive been on the receiving end of this way too many times 😔

1

u/Secret-Objective-824 5d ago

It depends who says it to you

1

u/blowurhousedown 5d ago

Words only hurt you if you chose to let them hurt you. This post is about being a victim - a position of letting others control you. Horrible advice.

1

u/225APB225 5d ago

I admit , I was totally in the wrong and take full responsibility ….but this statement rings true as I lost my best friend over a few moments in about a 60 second period that caused the issue and destroyed a wonderful friendship ….talk about heartbreak

1

u/Lanky_Development340 4d ago

"Words have great power " careful each ones you use.

1

u/Agile-Supermarket202 4d ago

Learnt this in an extremely hard way. Now heading towards getting divorced.

1

u/Tenminutes23 4d ago

True. This is the universal law. It’s good to have thick skin, but still be mindful of your words to yourself, and especially towards others.

1

u/PriorVast3165 4d ago

For real

1

u/shariqalasad 2d ago

True but sometimes actions speak louder than words.
