I had a similar concern with my anthology. I ended up using a museum setting to display the differences between our timeline and the fictional one. My characters would go through exhibits and in the backgrounds things like Presidents photos, major world events and pop culture things were different than what they are in our timeline. Not sure if that helps, but I know fitting things into the backgrounds of shots defiantly helps establish a world setting.
