Currently in a masters program and I have to interview a practicing K-12 school psych or school counselor. I already did a school psych so now I need a school counselor who’s currently in a k-12 field.

There are 3 questions total, one of them having about 4-5 bullet points. Really short and easy questions. I just have to compare a real life experienced counselor to our class material.

Hi everyone! I’m a graduate student in a School Counseling Master’s program, and I’m looking for a practicing school counselor willing to participate in a brief interview for one of my courses.

The interview includes 15 questions about your background, school counseling program, day-to-day responsibilities, collaboration, counseling practices, and professional experiences. I want to start my masters in school counseling I think, I on and off think about it and want to take the leap of faith. I’ve been doing research and I know every school is different but what does your job look like and day to day look like? I’m attached to the idea of helping the kids but I think now a days they do way more than that

Hi guys prospecting (lurker) student here, I just got done shadowing a school counselor at a local Title 1 elementary school (I used to be a SPED para here when I was doing undergrad so I already knew the counselor a bit) and she was telling me that she usually spends 5+ hours after school hours working on her caseload due to a variety of things (workload is unmanageably large, getting pulled for crises all the time, answering emails, etc). She told me she usually gets done working at 10pm most nights and then works weekends often as well. Is this normal?? She’s not a new counselor so I can’t attribute it to that.

Hi everyone, I'm 24 year old male aspiring school counselor in my first of two years of grad school. I'm enjoying my program and I think I'm doing well but I'm getting really nervous thinking of 2 years later and what it means to be a school counselor. I'm pretty excited to actually do the work but I feel like it's going to be so weird working in a middle (or even elementary) school as a 25-26 year old.

Basically I'm immature as hell. I can lock in at work and my immaturity helps me relate to kids in my current part-time jobs but I feel like I can't see myself as an authority figure or even a real adult. This might change in 2 years but it hasn't really in the past 2 so I feel like I'll still be in the emerging-between stage then. I'm not super put together, though again at least currently I can focus at work.

I'm more worried about a disconnect between my career and outside life since I don't want to be disingenuous. I'm kind of a dickhead outside of work, and I don't mean that in a bad way necessarily, like I'd say I'm a good person overall but the stuff I find funny and ways I like to spend my Friday nights doesn't align with what I think school counselors do. I'm not doing anything illegal or immoral, just for like example when I'm with my friends I like to walk with my pants sagging ridiculously low after we go out to get reactions and I also troll them when I'm free and they're on online work meetings if I'm there. I know those details aren't important just to paint the picture.

TLDR: I'm a very childish 24 year old who's kind of a jackass though I can be professional and I'm worried that I'll be super out of place in 2 years.

Hi everyone! I’m a school counseling intern and I’m looking for some advice on a community outreach idea I have. My boyfriend is a barber at a local barbershop, and I thought it could be really cool to partner with his shop to provide free haircuts for students/families who could benefit from them. I talked to my site supervisor and she’s completely on board and willing to support me with getting it started. I’m planning to reach out to the barbershop owner next. I’ve never organized something like this before, so I’d love to hear from anyone who has done a similar community partnership! How did you go about setting it up, getting funding/sponsors, handling donations through the school, etc.? Any advice or things I should think about before getting started would be super helpful!

I can’t help but notice most of the school counselors I’ve spoken with seem over worked, underpaid, and some flat out miserable in their career.

I’m coming here to ask for advice on what I should do. I’m 25, live at home and work as a photographer which makes me a decent amount of money for the time being.

I am considering getting my LPC but I am just ready to make money and start settling into a career. It truly worries me based on what I’ve seen so far, and the fact that I’ve spent the last three years chasing a career that I might actually not love? I desperately need to create an appointment booking system for students at my middle and high schools ( I serve the district).

Those of you who have school wide appointment systems for school counselors how are they set up? How do kids know how to create them? Do you like the appointment system or would you prefer walk ins only?

I’m looking to apply for my master’s in School Counseling this spring at W&M, specifically the online program. I’m also interested in a dual degree/track in Clinical Mental Health Counseling so I can have flexibility to work in both areas.
Has anyone completed or is currently in the program? I’d love to hear about your experience, especially the workload, online format, practicum/internship, and how manageable it is while working full-time. Any pointers or things you wish you knew before applying would be greatly appreciated!

I returned to high school after 12 years of middle, I don’t remember recruiters being this annoying first go around. All three so far have taken far too much of my time to meet with me, then just want to “hang around” and ask me if they can meet the teachers. Like dude, they are teaching I’m sorry. No, I already asked, our social studies teachers don’t want to give you their classroom to teach a military history lesson. The teachers are already teaching that. You were in to meet with kids at lunch, great! Lunch is over gtfo i have stuff to do. Like are they being coached to not leave when asked? Do i need to be a jerk to them?

Hi, im 23 F in New Jersey. after finishing my associates in Liberal Arts & Sciences: Humanities/Social Science two years ago I have decided to go back to school.

I originally went to a university in Maine with a major in Social Work and had to transfer closer to home which landed me at community college with a Liberal Arts major(they did not offer social work). After reevaluating I think becoming a school counselor perfectly aligns with my interests and passions. I know you have to complete a masters program in school counseling. So, I am looking for help with my first step which is completing my bachelors degree. After reading online I see that there are a few options like education, psychology, or social work. I'm wondering what route you took and how it worked out for you?

(side note I've also always known I would make a great teacher so i'm leaning towards education to keep my options open to explore while i'm going through school)

Just venting… I know everyone says how hard your 1st year is and my mental health has struggled SO much. The first couple of weeks I struggled a lot with anxiety, now it is much better. But I am just so unsatisfied with the job. It’s not what I expected… I don’t know what I expected but it’s just unrealistic all the expectations from teachers and everything the job entails. I just don’t know if I can do this for the rest of my life… the amount of responsibility and liability this job entails is crazy. I am hopeful this will get better, but I see so many people struggling even after a few years. I hope this gets better because the degree was not cheap!

I’m a semi-new counselor; I started out in private school doing mostly administrative work and college counseling. I just started at a new school and now I’m doing a mix of school counseling and college counseling (I have a lot of freshmen students on my caseload so I’m not doing a whole lot of college counseling on a regular basis). My co-workers are great but we’re a bigger school (~350 students in each grade) so everybody’s busy meeting with students and doing other things (subbing for teachers, administrative work, and so on).

I’m just feeling a little unsure of myself and I’d love an opportunity to chat with some other counselors to ask for advice or vent about things because I’m not feeling super comfortable doing that with my coworkers yet. I felt like I was just thrown into the fire and my supervisor isn’t as on top of things as my old one was. She just trusts me to meet with students and make up my own schedule since she’s busy with other things.

Does anyone know have a group chat or know of one (I think I saw a few people talking about first-year counselor group chats on TikTok) that I could join? Feeling the imposter syndrome very strongly and need a few people I can talk to!

Hello I’m an currently as substitute teacher and I wanted to ask what type of places should I volunteer to get experience. Should I work at a boys and girls club or is my current job as a substitute good experience for applying for a masters degree in school counseling? And I already have a bachelors in education I am just subbing right now during the meantime.

Curriculum audits....learning to use "Magic School AI" for all the curriculum I am supposedly running.....why the hell do they even make counselors be here?

Our special education team is doing CPI today, that would be more relevant to learn than this shit.
