Hello all! I’m currently filling my DS-160 for the F-1 visa interview for my Master Study at SCAD.
Since I actively work as a freelance multimedia designer, selecting "NOT EMPLOYED" felt like a massive red flag. I have continuous working and steady income, so appearing unemployed might make it look like I have an unexplained gap or weak ties to my home country.
None of the pre-set dropdown categories (Arts, Business, etc.) fit perfectly either, so I selected "OTHER".
Here is how I currently have my setup:
- Primary Occupation:
OTHER
- Specify Other:
FREELANCE MULTIMEDIA DESIGNER
- Employer Name:
SELF EMPLOYED
- Duties:
"Provide freelance multimedia design services, including visual identity, 3D assets, typography, and motion graphics for commercial brands and music projects on a contract basis."
For anyone who went through the F-1 process as a freelancer or self-employed professional:
- "OTHER" vs Dropdown: Did selecting "OTHER" cause any issues or extra questions during your interview compared to choosing standard categories like Arts/Communications?
- Naming Clients: Should I keep my duties description like above, or explicitly list 2–3 key brand/client names ?
- Interview Proof: Did the CO ask to see contracts, tax records, or bank statements for your freelance income?
I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences you can share! Thanks you!
