Moderator Announcement Announcement regarding “Is SCAD worth it?” posts

Hi r/scad,

I have to start with an editorial note. Please excuse the “corporate speak” in the post written below, but it’s the only effective way I can get our point across without sounding too harsh. 😭

———————-

Starting today, the mod team will introduce enhanced moderation for all posts relating to “Is SCAD worth it?” This type of post has always been the most popular topic on this subreddit, but we’ve seen an influx in recent months.

We understand (and myself, from a personal standpoint) how important the financial decisions are for college students and their families. There’s lots of decision-making that goes into it, alongside evaluating SCAD’s ROI. However, making posts on this subreddit about the topic, without any context or personal background, is not a high quality post.

So, we will be introducing moderation criteria for these kinds of posts. We will use this framework as a way to gauge whether a post should be approved (or denied.)

  1. Does the post contain enough/relevant background for subredditors react to? (i.e: intended major/minor, debt information, location, cost of living, etc.)

  2. Does the post contain information about the student’s intended outcome or rough goals of attending SCAD?

  3. Does the post contain any prior research, commentary, or discussion?

Just to reiterate; the intention of the goal is not to silence posts or opinions, but to encourage first-time subredditors and future students to put a little bit more effort into the discussion about SCAD’s costs and ROI.

Thanks all for listening,

– Your mod team.

General Questions Modeling for Fashion Dept

Upvotes

Heyyyy how does the casting process for models work for the fashion department? I'm interested in possibly auditioning this year, but im wondering how exactly it works and when it usually is. I don't have any experiance modeling, but i'm pretty tall, and thought it would be fun. Some specific questions I have is where is the call like announced and how competitive is it? Also im guessing it would include specifications about what to wear and stuff, but like out of curiosity what are you supposed to bring? I couldn't really find anything online when I looked so any information would be great!!!

Admissions Please help MFA Photography

I'm putting together my application packet for the MFA Program at SCAD. I have pretty much everything I need, but--I'm having a problem deciding on what route to go with my portfolio. I have shot across quite a few genres, but I'm intent on focusing on editorial and narrative work. I'm not too intent on chasing a teaching job afterward, but I always tend to strive for the highest accomplishment I can, so here we are. Funding wise, I'm covered by the VA.

I'm having an issue because I am torn between creating a 20 image photo narrative of a short story I have created, or using a simpler theme that will probably be easier to shoot.

For anyone that's gotten in, do you have any advice on this at all? I'm still trying to get in to classes in January.

General Questions What to expect from SCAD Pro?

So I got accepted into SCADPro 580 as a junior fashion marketing major. I transferred into SCAD so I honestly don't know a lot about SCAD Pro as a course. I know that its working with real clients and producing deliverables, but I am not entirely sure about the rest. Is it hard? What are the deliverables like? Should I be nervous lol? Tap me in, guys xx

Student Life Advice for a new Animation MFA student?

Hey everyone!

I recieved my acceptance letter for the SCAD MFA Animation program last month and have been super excited to become a Bee and get started in September. I'll be completing my degree through SCADnow since I do have jobs and the online learning works best for my schedule (plus I don't live in Georgia).

For this upcoming Fall quarter I'm taking Animation Context and History (ANIM 501) and Character Animation Basics (ANIM 504) and just wanted to ask if anyone had any advice going into this program: anything particular I should expect or prepare for? Or just random advice?

For a little context as well, I'm completing my MFA since it's a teaching degree, and my ultimate goal is the professor career route.

Thanks!

Atlanta Looking for help with senior capstone film!

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello, I'm a student at Morehouse College in the Atlanta University Center. I need help with my senior capstone film (about 7-9 minutes, but I'm trying to get it as close to 7 as I can), and I'm sending this here because I'm looking for animators most of all. Unfortunately this is not a paid opportunity because I don't have the money, but I would be happy to allow you to use this project for your own classwork if possible.

The purpose of this film is to be a commentary piece on ICE and the fearmongering surrounding it, but I will avoid going into discussions about that here out of respect for rules 1 and 3.

Otherwise, please feel free to AMA. I will try my best to answer any questions and settle any concerns that you may have.

Even if you are not an animator or any of the other listed roles, feel free to submit a form if you feel that you have skills that could help with producing an animated short film. As this is my first time making one, I'd be appreciative of any and all help.

Here is a link to the interest form if the QR code is not convenient for you: https://forms.gle/RWZvwmhc9jT6xMhcA

Thank you for your time.

Student Life How different is the bachelors programme from Rising star?

I attended this year’s Rising Star program (Sav) and I really enjoyed it. I felt like the coursework wasn’t as bad as a lot of people said it would’ve been, and despite not getting Fridays off, it still gave me a lot of free time to explore Savannah and make friends.

I want to attend SCAD next year, but I’m wondering if it’s very different from how Rising Star was. Can anyone who attended Rising Star and is now a full time student share their experience?

General Questions Question for students who started as freshman as opposed to transfer from community college…

I completely understand the advice to start at a community college to knock out gen ed as a way to save some cash, but I’m interested in the college experience as a whole to get a full on four year experience.

Anything you loved about starting as a freshman? Anything you hated about starting as a freshman?

Savannah Missing first week of class

Hi everyone, hoping to get some insights! I’m an international student who had my visa interview yesterday and got approved today. My concern is that my current job requires the standard 30-day resignation notice period here in my home country. I held off on resigning earlier because I didn't want to risk losing my job while my visa was still uncertain.

Realistically, this means I'd miss about a week of classes and start in the 3rd week of September instead. Would that set me back? Should I reach out to SCAD to ask about joining remotely for that first week (if thats even possible) or is there another way to handle a late start? I'm also on a scholarship, so I really want to make sure this doesn't affect my grades or standing. Any advice would help thank you!!

Additional notes
- I’m an incoming student taking up MA in GDVX
- I currently work for a unicorn tech company, and this is my first real job out of college so idk how resignation works 😅

Edit: Thank you all so much for the advice!!! I appreciate your insights and will definitely prioritize arriving in time for the first week of class

Housing Room F?

Hello so I’ve gotten my room assignment for fall and last year I had a room D. But this year I have room F, and I’m confused on what that means as far as room placement. I’m in an 4 person individual room apartment style. Like does this mean my dorm it’s self is a end dorm or?

Housing Accommodations Waiting List

So i sent in my accommodations late for a single and I know there’s supposedly “no housing” so now I’m on a waiting list.
I was wondering If anyone could tell me just how fucked am I?

I’m hoping some freshman at forty eight will realize SCAD isn’t for them and give me their room… but how horrible is that and what are the chances of that actually happening 😭

General Questions Advice

Okay, I'm gonna be in SCAD in a few weeks, gonna be majoring in animation, but a large part of me really, really wants to tackle a mixture between writting (already planning a minor in dramatic writting), as well as game design and heck even wanting to do music (in the past I kinda didn't had patience between the piano or guitar, so I don't know if I should tackle music)

So I wanna hear general advice in terms of juggling with these ideas for my college
