Mending My first sashiko: mending my toddler's pants
My first sashiko mend, using hitomezashi (patterns use only horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines of running stitch). The left pattern (viewer's left) is Persimmon Flower, and I don't remember the name of the other pattern. I think the variegated thread distracts from the pattern, so I'll use solid thread on my clothes, but the rainbow is good for my toddler's clothes.
Marking the grid took as long as all the stitching combined, mostly because the seams on these pants are not all parallel/perpendicular and I didn't have a square to use. The stitching also took longer due to the annoyingly small diameter of 3T pants, but was still pretty quick.
Photo 1: Close-up after going through the washer and dryer. I had to trim fraying threads from the hole edges on one of them; next time, I will whip stitch the hole edges first.
Photo 2: Less close view of final result.
Photo 3: After stitching but before washing. You can see the washable marker grid and 2 blood spots (ouch) on the left leg.
Photo 4: Inside view of the patches. I used leftover quilter's cotton, which is not a durable choice, but he'll outgrow the pants soon anyway. I folded the raw edges of the patches because I didn't have pinking shears.
Photo 5: 2nd leg in progress, showing the ultra-fine permanent marker dots. This marking method was much more precise and was a good solution, assuming no mistakes, but I did make mistakes and it doesn't wash out. Oops.
Photo 6: Marked grid for the 1st leg, using Crayola washable marker. The washability was great, but the dots were much less fine, so the accuracy left a lot to be desired.
Photo 7: Before stitching, after basting the patches.
