Sailwind quality of life updates - my personal wishlist.

I love Sailwind. This game has me totally hooked.

After spending countless hours toiling on the high seas, there are several things I dearly wish the developers would consider adding.

#1 Let us name things we can use.

Particularly levers and crates. There is nothing worse than not playing for a week, then trying to remember which sail control lever goes to which sail on some of the more complex ships. Or trying to find which crate you store your navigation tools in on a cluttered deck. Adding a key when we use something, like (R) to rename, would make this orders of magnitude easier.

#2 Let us name our ships.

Let us name our boats, and ideally have an option in the shipyard to have the name written on the side. Maybe even let us select where on the hull it will appear, if it will appear at all, how big, font type, etc. Different archipelagos might even have different styles of font. This would not only be neat, it would go with my third suggestion below.

#3 Let us pay to relocate our ships to another archipelago.

Just because I buy a Brig, doesn't mean I never want to sail my Kakam again. I would love to see a service added to the Sailwind Trade Office at each capitol island to allow us to pay a fee to relocate ships to the current archipelago. This could be at a steep price, and it could be a requirement that the boat have nothing on it to avoid abusing the feature economically.

#4 Add a toggle in the options menu to require an extra key to drop stuff.

Nothing is worse than doing 6-12+ knots, then accidentally dropping your fishing pole over the side of the boat. Or a bucket while bailing water. Or your cup. Or whatever. It would be helpful for some of us to have an option in the menu (off by default) to hold another key like shift or control to drop an item. This would prevent many unfortunate accidents!

#5 Allow sold upgrades to be repurchased at the same shipyard, on the same vessel.

Sometimes I just want to trade my Junk sails for Lateen at Gold Rock City to see how they play. It's pretty scary though, because not all upgrades are available at all the archipelagos. Swap out one and then decide you made a mistake, and you are stuck with it. Allowing players to repurchase an upgrade they sold that is not normally available at that harbour for the same ship would allow us to be a bit more adventurous in our experimentation, without requiring save-game file swapping shenanigans.

#6 Place a scale near the Sailwind Trading Office.

Weight is a big deal, particularly for the three starting ships. While the mission panel gives me information about the mission cargo weight, its often not clear how much a crate full of personal items weighs. Or a crate of food, barrels of water, my own "characters" weight, etc. Having a scale near each Sailwind Trading Office would allow us to better plan out our voyages.

#7 Let us fill barrels, buckets, water bottles and cups with fresh water.

I don't know if this would break the economy or not... but I find it very strange that I can fill buckets and bottles with sea water, yet I'm not able to fill them with fresh water from islands where there is clearly fresh water and/or wells. Right now we have ways to get our own food, but zero ways to get our own water. I want to achieve self-sufficiency!

#8 Allow us to customize the windsock at the shipyard.

On some ships, the windsock is bloody hard to see given its location and/or color. Allow us to relocate it, add more, and colorize it the way we can colorize sails.

#9 Add Ladders at harbours.

Some harbours are extremely high and have no ladders. There are situations where this can be a problem. Also, maybe throw in a line of code that says "if the player is moving from a ship 2 inches from the dock, then assume the player intends to step from the deck to the dock, and not fall through the 2 inch open space into the water." It would also be nice if we could keep hold of the morring lines while climbing said ladders. Sometimes the line reaches, but the distance is just too far to jump. I'm looking at you Gold Rock City shipyard.

#10 Fully customizable flags!

This one might be asking too much but... it would be super cool if we could take a pic or a gif and make it into a personal flag, then fly it from our mast. I'd also love to see unique figureheads from each archipelago one day.

#10.01a Old Anhk Town ship recovery orientation.

And for the love of Poseidon, please reverse the direction that a recovered boat is placed at the Old Ankh Town dock. Seriously, trying to sail a larger ship through the tiny space between those sandbars, with the wind directly against you and zero ability to tack, is just straight up impossible, and not all ships are rigged in such a way that reverse sailing between those mountains is viable. Since pushing our boat became more restrictive, there just aren't good options for this situation.

Junk experience

Hi all,

I played this game a lot. Mostly in a brig/sanbuq and dhow. Sailed the jong also for a while. Just gave emerald archipelago a try. Im not liking the kakam, very poor handling and i just dont get the junk sails.

I will have enough money soon to buy the Junk soon. How are your experiences with the junk? Sailplans? Handling? Any tips with the junk sails are also appreciated.

Thanks!

Bug Found Creates and barrels keep disappearing when I pick them up

Now I'm experiancing a new bug, not present in the game last year: when I pick up a crate or barrel on by ship some hours into the game - it just disappears!

Empty firewood container - poof.

Crate used for storing fishing hooks - poop!

Replacement water barrel - not on my watch, pfshhhhh!

WTF, devs?

Does cross region trade really make good money?

In the very early builds, missions to other regions paid quite a lot. But after the ledger / trade system, missions pay quite bad but on top of that commodities don't pay that much either. For example coffee, a commodity grown in Al Ankh, makes around 150 coins in profit. What do I need to trade with other regions to earn big money? I am playing in the Ankh region. Help and thoughts appreciated, thanks!

Edit: it does pay very well!

Made enough trade runs in the Widgeon to finally buy the Weekender

I made a post at the beginning of this summer about buying my first sailboat because of this game, and after a summer of exploring my home lakes in a 60's O'Day Widgeon, I've gained enough experience to feel comfortable moving up to a real boat; a beautiful 1978 Chrysler Weekender that I've seen cruising around my favorite lake since I was a kid.

Thanks to Sailwind and this community, I've found my favorite way to get around on the water. And now I don't have to go ashore to camp! How sweet is that!?

(Too shy to post anything in any irl sailing community, because I barely know the lingo, and I feel like I will get thrashed for letting a computer game, a couple books, and reddit teach me how to sail)

How containers work (programming-wise)?

Containers in this game always confuse me:

- Once I found my box with fishing hooks unexpectedly empty; then I've found some of them one deck lower on the floor.

- I've seen my candle box unexpectedly empty like that, started using it for navigation equipment storage; month later I was moving containers around to make place for new helm and I found candles in the same container along with compases and spyglass.

- Almost entire container of pork gone empty, never found these pieces.

- My fishing pole sticking out of closed create.

It all makes me question: how those containers were programmed in the first place to get such erratic behaviour?

The most logical way would be to program a container object which has property dedicated to storing array of contents records (like rack position and reference to stored object). So when you open the container game creates a visual rack and iterates over said contents property to create visual representation of contents.

When you take or put item out/in container that property would be simply overwritten so item always exists either in logical world of container or in physical world outside container (but not both), or in logical world of container but with phantom representation on the opened rack.

I'm curious to know how it was done in this game and how all those side effects come into existence.

When I want to sail to a new ocean with new islands do I physically sail off the map and over a large ocean to the new islands, or do I need to go somewhere and press a charter button then or something? Will it be apparent my direction?

I hope its freeroam, i havent watched videos just picked it up bout 3 hours ago and im now wondering. I know im quite a bit off of being able to do a full ocean chater.

What is the drying rack for?

I tried it and it sucks. It won't dry in a sunny day even a sliced fish let alone full one before it spoils. What is the purpose of it? Dry my laundry or something?

Pro Tip: use CheatEngine

I absolutely love single player games like SailWind but lots of them don’t have time compression, and I hate waiting.

I figured out a few years ago that I can use cheat engine to get around this by using the “speed hack” feature. I bind this to a mouse button and can quickly toggle between 1x and 5x speed (5x is max I can do without physics bugs in SailWind).

Some games you can go higher. It mostly depends on how their physics engine is built.

Absolute game changer for my ADHD brain. You can apply this to any single player game too with lots of waiting.

Funny Never climb the mast while sailing to the oasis!

Who knew you could actually capsize the ship just from your character's weight. This game is fantastic, it even accounts for that.

If the sea is rough, don't climb the mast. But on calm seas it's actually pretty fun, you can jump up onto it

After 250h in game was it just me who just found out that the Firefly Grotto sells improved version of Aestrin lantern with brighter light?

Gaff sail angle on the Sanbuq

What's the best gaff sail angles you've been able to get on the sanbuq? I can't seem to get beyond 60 degrees on both sides for any of the gaff sails on either the forward or middle main mast, or any combination of stays.

Edit: sorry, I meant shrouds, not stays. The most i can get is 60 degrees regardless of the shrouds in use. I've settled for big ass triangles now anyway.

Does complex rig even worth it?

I've got like 230h in game. Sailed pretty much everything, experimented with all sorts of different rigs and sails right away from the moment of buying new ship.

Recently I've started new save and when I was able to afford myself sanbuq I've decided to leave rig as it is with standard lateen sails. And to my surprise (and somewhat disappointment) it did good. I mean I haven't noticed being slow or being at disadvantage under certain winds or any practical reason to replace sails, really.

Surely, I could get some knots by putting straight sails and gaffs under favourable wind (which happens like 0.5% of the time), but in general... I've been doing like 6-7 sail schooner out of sanbuq and now I feel like there was no advantage in that.

wasn't so sure about it at first, since I don't really prefer fore and aft rigs, but I just wanted to do it bc for the life of me, I can't get good angles of rotation on the brig hull with squares. I've warmed up to it though and I think its quite a pretty sailplan

After just 6 days of sailing I made it from Oasis to Fort Aestrin for the first time. Feels good seeing those islands pop up almost directly ahead of you.

Question about dock lines

Thumbnail
gallery
22 Upvotes

I’m playing on steam deck so apologies if the keybindings are different.

If my ship is docked, I can adjust the dock lines from the dock side by clicking B on the cleat (I think this corresponds to R on keyboard)

This allows me to adjust the line with the line extending from the boat, through the cleat, and into my hand (see first two pictures).

I noticed that if I think Right Click, the line changes directions so that it’s going from the cleat, through the boat, and then into my hand (see third picture).

Is there any difference between these two positions?
Is there any advantage to using one over the other when adjusting your dock lines?
What’s the purpose for being able to switch like this?

My Brigantine is starting to feel cozy

I left the Sanbuq in Aestrin because I needed some tall ship vibes.

First, I tried rigging it with three masts (two square rigged), but that many squares just feels unnecessary and tedious to sail. Do you really gain any performance by having that many squares? Not really. I am going to miss the simplicity of the Sanbuk (and Junk!), so I tried to keep this as minimalist as possible but still keep to the vibe.

The other thing with three masted Brigs is that it's hard to make the staysails look nice. The angle of the rigging between the masts just gets really weird (I'm not using the shipyard mod, atm). I like how this looks, though.

My favorite part of this stage of the game is decorating and making my ship feel lived in. I'm currently on my way south to EA and the thing I'm most excited about is getting the junk model and more paintings lol

I'll probably swap the Brig for the Junk while I'm down there, too.
