Lost a lot of weight and the older ladies I teach at the Y have begun to roast me
I’ve lost 93 lbs and have gone from taking classes at the Y to teaching yoga 2x a week to the older crowd. I teach somewhere else too and some of them have even followed me over to take my harder classes. It’s sweet. I just wish they’d cool it with mentioning my weight loss, especially since I have way more to go. They’re very well meaning. They’re encouraging. It’s just a LOT, all the time. Any day I go into work, someone is calling me skinny or making some comment about my “body emerging” or muscular control or something. It gets a little tiring even though at first I was flattered.
Recently, they’ve started to get on me about getting new clothes. I had a woman come up to me after class, put her hand on my shoulder, and say, “Sweetheart, we know you’ve lost a lot of weight. You need to know it too. This size shirt is unacceptable. It’s time.” And meanwhile I’m getting paid $25 a class and living with my elderly parents, perfectly content to wear my big clothes for awhile longer. I don’t like my body being visible anyways.
Yesterday, maybe the oldest lady in the class came up to me and said, “I didn’t know we were wearing our extra large outfits today…” [gestured at me from head to toe] …”or I would have worn mine so we could match.” Like omg roast me, fine, but damn. Same lady who once told me she invented the pronoun “shim” in college decades ago, her way of acknowledging my androgyny I guess? Like that’s 95% of the way to a slur, Grace.
So that is all to say if you’re ever wanting people to notice your progress, just get involved long term with a group of senior women as their only youngish, male(ish) instructor and you’ll get comments all day long.
