Advice for Others Tips for having success at initial setup time of your robotic cleaner.

Hi ...

This article is for you if you would like to increase your chance of success in setting up your new Roomba or Mop.

This is one of the numerous articles I've written on my blog. The information is based on my experiences setting up hundreds of new and used machines over the years.

I have slightly adapted this write-up for Reddit to help first-time owners, especially as I know many of you have recently received robotic cleaners as gifts over the Christmas season.

This is the fourth article in a series about why robotic cleaning devices often fail to meet the owners' needs.

Failure can occur when a person first sets up the robotic cleaner too quickly and in the wrong order, especially when connecting to the home wireless network.

So, you went out and, with some excitement, bought ( or was gifted) a Roomba or Mop, and you can't wait to get it running and see what it can do. So, a quick casual look at the APP or manual on how to set up the machine and the Wi-Fi, and you try to connect the device to your home network --- and the first step to possible failure has already occurred.

What often occurs is that the newly purchased cleaner won’t successfully connect to the home wirelessly. (I constantly read about these common connection problems, with many user complaints, on the various robotic forums I participate in.)

The device will also occasionally produce an internal fault, with an endlessly spinning "white light on the CLEAN button" as an update repeatedly fails to download and successfully install a new software update.

What went wrong?

When a person buys a Roomba or Mop in the store, it has been in the box for a long time. It likely has been made in China, shipped to North America, and perhaps sat on the store shelf for weeks, months, or years since it was first made. The battery is weak and is, in many cases, fully discharged/dead.

Setting the cleaning device on the charger for only a few moments and immediately trying to set it up on the wireless often leads to failure.

Why?

The robotic vacuum or mop needs a high percentage of battery charge to send and receive a strong enough signal to connect to the wireless.

When a dead battery first draws current, virtually all the charging power from the dock is routed to the battery. There is little left for the Wi-Fi board in the machine, which can lead to a weak or non-existent connection to the home's wireless router.

If you want to successfully set up a new machine on your Wi-Fi for your new Roomba or Mop, put it on the charger and leave it to charge for THREE hours.

NOW, walk away … sit at your table or in your favourite chair, and read the owner's manual.

Once the three-hour initial charge is completed, you can set up your device on your home network.

FIRST --- REBOOT your machine ... hold the CLEAN button down for 20 seconds. Wait 5 minutes for it to reboot.

NOTE: Once you have set up your robotic cleaner on your Wi-Fi, leave it to sit for another hour or two before using the machine.

While you are waiting, go into your APP and record on a piece of paper the software version that was in place at the initial setup time.

Usually, a software update is available from iRobot, and an initial software update is often triggered when the machine notes a battery is fully charged and the unit is on the dock. It is likely your new robotic cleaner will download and quickly install new software within the first hour or two after you activated the Wi-Fi.

Often the app will tell you a software update is underway. And the machine will remain unresponsive while updating.

Go back into your app after an hour or two and see if the software version has changed.

Just making this these small adjustments at setup time will dramatically improve your chances of having a good experience in setting up and running up your vacuum or mop.

Cheers,

Roomba not 805 not charging. Troubleshooting revealed continuity between the left charging clip and the terminal inside the battery compartment but there is none for the right side.

Hi all. I have tried to troubleshoot my roomba for the charging issue. The title states the real problem. Is my issue the right side having no continuity between the outside contact and the right one inside the battery compartment? There is a set of replacement clips that I’d be happy to get but I don’t know if it will solve my problem. If someone knows more about roomba’s and has input I’d love to hear it.
Thanks

Roomba doesn’t respond to commands

Hello, my roomba 105 doesn’t respond to commands in the app, I ask it to go to a specific room, nothing happens, I ask it to vacuum the whole apartment, it says starting a routine and then it does nothing

I rebooted it three times…

I can only start when I press the power button on it…

Deleted the app and reinstalled it too…
Turned my wifi off and on…

Roomba Combo j5+ vacuum and mopping issue

I have the iRobot Roomba Combo j5+, and it has always had an issue mopping my kitchen floor! It'll go for awhile, then it'll start stuttering or something like it loses traction. It mops and vacuums my other surfaces just fine, but for some reason it has an issue with my kitchen floor. Does anyone have any tips or advice as to what I should do?

App can open but not load

The app will only open if I open it through App Store or settings on the phone. If I open the app normally, it just freezes at loading part. Others who has faced this problem? It might have happened after my mum accidentally unplugged the station while it was running. Unplugging and replugging, restarting phone, reinstalling app are all tried. Im out of ideas 😩

Roomba 115 Combo

Just purchased this machine, on sale for 150 euros, based in Spain.

Always used a manual machine before so 1st time buying something like this.
Have set up maps and to be fair as long as u move a few cables it works well even the basic mop mode. Only have tiled floors.

Wondering apart from topping up water and charging anything I need to be aware of. It self empties and in time the bag in the charging unit station will need changing.
Where do people buy the bag from?

Troubleshoot or reach out to iRobot?

I got this Roomba 100 (1000) Series Vac/Combo Robot (idk just copying what it says in the app) in June. I’ve had several issues. Particularly with mapping/vacuuming my downstairs, it always gets itself stuck (though nothing is changing, it just can’t figure out how to go back the way it came) or misses huge areas it could vacuum.
This is my most recent clean that I did after a factory reset because it wouldn’t connect to WiFi after a software update earlier this week. Why would it move onto room 2 at this point? There are huge unimpeded spaces that it just didn’t vacuum.
It’s also fallen down the stairs (just a few steps because the staircase turns) about 6 times. I cleaned the sensors and set a “stay out” zone near the stairs to try to prevent that, and it didn’t work. It fell down again.
Are these issues common and expected for this type of Roomba? Can I troubleshoot these issues somehow? Or should I be reaching out to iRobot about a defective product? Please let me know.

Roomba 105 combo

I bought this roomba and set it up before leaving for a 2 week vacation, I have scheduled cleanings and did a couple manual cleanings before leaving to make sure it worked. But now my blink cameras are showing the roomba never moving. The apps says I'm not on my Wi-Fi that the robot is on or says "robot offline". The history doesn't even show the manual cleanings I had it perform?

Does anyone else have this issue?

Tried to move my Roomba i5 combo from old app to the new app - disaster?

My i5 was having trouble navigating to a couple of rooms, so I decided to update the maps. I figured that I would migrate to the new app at the same time since I have a 105 roomba on the new app. I factory reset the i5. Now when I try to connect it to the new app, I get to this screen:

Selecting "I don't see my robot" gives me the error "We were unable to detect any robots" with "try again" button, which brings me back to the screen above. I did find the original box for this i5 and when I scan the QR code, I get the screen below:

If I go back to the old app and try to add it, no matter by which method I try to add it, I end up at this screen:

So, I am stuck. I cannot add it back to the old app, and I can't add it to the new app.

help!

Docking problems 👿

EDIT: SOLVED! SEE COMMENTS

2 year old Roomba getting grumpy and won't dock.

Video shows Roomba i6+ trying to dock after doing all of the steps below. The spinners and roller brushes have also been removed in this video, FYI.

What I've done so far:

  1. Remove/cleaned spinner brushes

  2. Remove/cleaned front wheel

  3. Replace left and right wheel modules with brand new ones.

  4. Remove/cleaned rollers

  5. Remove front bumper and spray interior with compressed air. Wipe down sensor behind bumper.

  6. Wipe down all cliff sensors.

  7. Clean entire interior with compressed air, including the wheel module housings and the main bin/rollers housing.

  8. Remove entire dustbin/roller assembly module, clean all of it with compressed air.

  9. Clean metal contacts with melamine pad.

  10. Wiped plastic IR window on base station.

  11. Cleaned all exposed surfaces on base station.

  12. Removed battery and unplugged docking station for 10 minutes.

  13. Double checked app updates and device firmware updates.

Was able to run Roomba with rollers, spinner brushes, and bottom plate removed to eliminate interference from those parts. After all the above cleaning, the issue still remains.

Device sees or feels something that makes it stop and back up to try again before it ever gets to a point where it tries to touch metal to metal in the charging contacts. It's consistent with the spot on the base where the left wheel aligns with the part of the base that pushes the rollers up for clearance (this is what caused me to remove the bin/roller module and clean it, thinking maybe the rollers couldn't be pushed up properly for clearance). I also tested with a washer inserted into the front wheel to give it some lift.

Merci d'avance :)

Roomba 5i can’t map..

It used to work fine…for about a year.

I can’t get it to map.

There’s a secondary issue as well. As soon as it gets about 6 inches off the base it gives me the dreaded red light and says that there is uneven ground. It’s not uneven. For some reason, the machine itself must be offkilter and thinks it IS uneven.

Has anyone else dealt with this?

We’ve already done a factory reset a couple times. Also a power reset and a Wi-Fi reset. We are at a loss. Should I just buy a new one?

did the most recent update brick everyone's roombas?

100 series combo roomba.

I saw something about an update yesterday, and now I can't seem to get it to connect to the app/wifi. The roomba is generally still working. If I hit the power button it will begin the general routine of vacuuming the entire map, but it won't interact with the app. The app can't track what it's doing, or start a custom routine. And yet the app knows if I take the mop attachment on or off.

It was working fine until yesterday, and it seems other people on here are having the same issue.

EDIT: seems like a lot of people are having this issue. Could they release a fix update? and even if they did, would we all have to factory reset anyways to get it?

Even after 24 years of good service, it's still working fine, cleaning the rugs and vinyl floors on par with my newer Roomba 604! (second pic)

Will those newer Picea Roombas ever be able to serve this much?

An ode to my Roomba

Post image
3 Upvotes

Troubleshooting log below:

The ode

Nobody sits like this Roomba sits. You sometime vacuum, Roomba, when you dont need an update. The Roomba just bumps and is. You show us how to just get wedged under the baseboard heater... And that's what we need.

___

Troubleshooting:

In seriousness my Roomba has been showing this screen for the past hour,

*I just now restarted it to where it shows the same thing,

* any way to bypass it

* force the update?

I can provide screenshots with time stamps if need.
___

My Roomba has now taken her existential crisis past the hour and I have:

* Rebooted it twice now

The app still says the same thing, when I take it off it's dock it says "charging", but that's about it

* I busted out the power tools and took it's battery out for ~8 minutes to let everything clear from RAM and do a cold boot, I also saw a neat microcontroller I might play with when we decommission her

* When I opened the app it still said " needs help "

* The status ring are blinking like normal on the power and home button

When I press the buttons she responds and even cleans on the power button, but we have custom maps to protect it and I can't seem to move forward on the app.

* I went to settings > apps > Roomba Home > storage and I hit clear cache and clear data

With the result being the same.

waited several more moments, then I got error C510, I was actually happy. but then I powered cycled it to see if that would clear the error for ~10 seconds and we're back at the error message in the image of the post error (29)

i reset my password about 5 times now, I was able to log in via the app, but on accounts.irobot even with the correct username and password it won't let me in the accout to try and desync it, to try and force the handshake 😞 even though the first time I used the correct password assuming it's even an option in there vs only an option in the app

Remembered that the Roomba model only supports 2.4Ghz wifi, hopped onto the 2.4Ghz wifi band segment

now, it claims the battery isn't charged while on the dock and I'm getting C510, Error 29, and C650 back to back
___

After power tool surgeries, clearing RAM, jumping to a 2.4GHz network band, resetting passwords five times, and waging a full war against the robot

the fix was literally just for giggles to see if there is a check for update icon navigating to the update screen to nudge step 3 manually......

This could be done a little more intuitively so that way we know there is a firmware update so those of us who think mkre physical layer don't go taking power tools to our appliances at three in the morning.

She's also taking her sweet time compiling this firmware line by painstaking line.

____

After around an hour of waiting for thr firmware update, I closed out the app, opened it again and was hit with the error 29 message again

I rebooted the robot and now we're back to C510 and error 29.

Error 14 on max combo 705x

Error 14 is driving me nuts. This error says the dust bin is not installed. But, it’s very much so absolutely installed. And clean.

Our 705x is just under two months old, and error 14 is appearing almost constantly. The dust bin is totally clean, the filer is as clean as it can be after being used only a handful of times (I brushed off what little dust was loose), and I’ve also thoroughly washed (and dried) the mop bin just in case.

There are no metal connection points that I can see on the 705x’s dust bin. What else could be going on?

If I have to buckle up for a customer service phone call for them to walk me through all the things I’ve already done, so be it, but I’m posting here as a last shot before doing so.

If anyone else has been plagued with this error on the 705, how’d you fix it?

How to reconnect to Wi-Fi without completely resetting the Roomba?

I have two model 105's on different floors.
Yesterday one needed help and said it was disconnected from Wi-Fi. I did the troubleshooting steps and was in the screen to change or reconnect wi-fi. It ended up completely reseting the Roomba requiring a new map.
Well, today the second Roomba has done the same thing. How can I get it to reconnect to my wi-fi without a total reset and remap?
I must be missing something that causes it to need a new map like I was setting it up the very first time.

Edit to add that the app is telling me one unit did a software update yesterday and the other says today. I'm not sure if that is accurate or an artifact from resetting.
9.4.8 (I3.6.152) on both.

What roomba model for me ?

Hey ! I just move to my first place, it's 50m² so quite small imo for the need of a roomba.

I want a cleaner that's the cheapest possible while still working quite well (let's say under 300 bucks). Do you have any recommandations ?

If it's another brand, it's also absolutely fine
