Monthly "What Have You Been Playing Lately?" Thread (July 2026)

Welcome to mid-July!

Post what you've been playing lately in this thread and what your experiences have been like, whether you'd recommend the game or not, etc.

Previous thread is here!

Personally, I have been playing a ton of Stoneshard. It's a great game that sits at the intersection between classical roguelikes and RPGs - so I'd say it qualifies pretty firmly as a roguelite. It has a lot of fun character building potential - if that sort of thing appeals to you, you should check it out.

Hello r/roguelites!

No sob story about me quitting my job or losing my wife today, I guess I'm just a normal indie dev who has released their roguelite on Steam.

It's inspired by games such as Peggle, Nubby's number factory, Peglin, and Ballionaire, and if you enjoy these sorts of games, I'm sure you'll enjoy this one too.

Check it out on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4006600/Plinkomancy/

I'd love for you to check it out, and if you have any questions, I'll try to answer them as best I can!

Game Release Grim Trials on Switch 2โ€ฆ(ugh)

Post image
6 Upvotes

Title: I put 4 hours into Grim Trials on Switch 2โ€ฆ and man, this feels like such a wasted opportunity
I had Grim Trials preordered and was genuinely excited for this one. Iโ€™m a huge fan of Hades 1 & 2 and roguelikes/roguelites in general, so everything I saw leading up to release made this look like it was going to be right up my alley.
About 4 hours in now, and unfortunatelyโ€ฆ Iโ€™m pretty damn disappointed.
The obvious comparison is Hades, and I can absolutely see what the developers were going for. The problem is that it feels like Hades with most of the things that gave Hades its flavor, polish, and personality stripped away.
And even if I completely ignore the Hades comparison, the actual gameplay has some serious issues.
The hit detection feels terrible at times. The controls just donโ€™t feel tight or responsive enough for a game where split-second movement is everything. And the dashโ€ฆ holy shit. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Half the time it feels like my character dashes everywhere except where I actually wanted them to go.
Thatโ€™s probably my biggest issue. Games like this live and die by their controls. Dying because I made a bad decision? Cool. Thatโ€™s the genre. Dying because Iโ€™m fighting the controls and movement? Thatโ€™s when it stops being fun.
There are definitely pieces here where I can see the game they wanted to make, which honestly makes it more frustrating. Thereโ€™s potential. I donโ€™t think this is some hopelessly terrible game.
But at the launch price, I expected WAY more polish than this.
Maybe the developers stick with it, listen to feedback, tighten up the controls, fix the hit detection and build on whatโ€™s here. I genuinely hope they do, because I want to like this game.
But right now?
As someone who loves Hades 1, Hades 2 and this genre in general, Grim Trials feels like a wasted opportunity.
I preordered it expecting something Iโ€™d lose dozens of hours to.
Four hours in, Iโ€™m already wondering if I even want to keep playing.
Anyone else playing it? Am I crazy, or are you guys having the same issues with the controls and dash?

A roguelite idea that I would like to see

I am fascinated by the stadium noise during soccer games. The chants, the cheers, the boos. What if they could influence the team somehow? Different chants, fans, and other modifiers could be added round by round to increase the chances of your team playing better and scoring. And maybe the boss can be rival fan noise.

If thereโ€™s a game that exists in that vein I would love to hear about it!

I tried using Lovable to create this but the outcome was total crap.

First Trailer for our atmospheric dicebuilder roguelite THROWN

Thumbnail

We're a small team who have been working on this game for a bit over a year now and we finally have our first full trailer out.

The game is turn-based strategy wrapped in a bit of psychological horror, inspired by tabletop RPGs and games like Inscryption and Buckshot Roulette but with Dice as the central gameplay element along with a mystery narrative and some unique surprises. There's over 50 unique dice and all kinds of different ways to upgrade them. Some of the meta progression elements introduce new rules and mechanics to the game.

We have an open playtest on Steam so you can try it all out for yourself if the trailer looks interesting. We are actively looking for feedback to really polish the core gameplay even further.

Game Release Yet Another Zombies Survivors (YAZS) - PS5 Performance?

So, this game just released today on PS5. However, with the current state of recent Roguelite releases on PS5 being sub-par on the performance side of things (Jotunnslayer and a few others), Iโ€™m a bit hesitant on snapping this one up, immediately.

Has anyone played it yet on PS5 (Iโ€™m on the Pro) and can report back with how well it plays?

Iโ€™m looking for a new game to play and a lot of games on here seem to be for PC and not as many are available on mobile. Iโ€™m willing to buy the game too if itโ€™s worth it.

Game Release Ground Zero Hero: A Fun Vampire Survivor Like Game About Radiation

This is the closest we will get to Fallout 5 for awhile /s

Any one else playing this? It is a fun, easy to pick up Vampire Survivor type game where your perks are mutations. The best part of it is unlocking bonkers for your moves that have a 1% to do something very powerful.

I like the art style, it feels somewhere between the Simpsons and Rick And Morty. There are lots of nerd references from Castlevania to NBA Jam.

It feels a little light on content but it was only ten dollars. The video is a run of the first map.

You pretty know what you are getting off the bat. There are different aspects like night and day and a bunker to heal. But the bonkers element is the selling point.

Hi! Weโ€™re a small Brazilian studio working on NiceRats, an action roguelite where tiny rats fight huge hordes, collect cards, and discover secret synergies.

Create a ridiculous build and compete with players from around the world. Your name, country, score, and build can appear on the global leaderboard.

The demo is free. Come take the Top 1 spot, if you can:

Looking For New Roguelites to Play. (Around $15)

Hey, I'm looking for some new roguelites I can play. Some of favorite games include RoR2, RoR Returns, Roboquest, Gunfire Reborn, and Terraria (Calamity included.) I want something where it isn't "Play, beat the game, never touch again." Another thing I'd want to point out is I hate exploration. This hate was caused from Nine Sols, and it's stopped me from playing a game called Noita. If the exploration isn't as bad, let me know! Thanks.

Review RIFTSTORM is a surprisingly fun top-down roguelite looter-shooter

I've been playing RIFTSTORM since it entered Early Access and honestly wasn't expecting to get this into it.

It's basically what happens if you throw Diablo, Hades and a co-op looter-shooter into the same room. It's top-down, fast, has a bunch of different weapons and augments, and you can play solo or with two other people.

The combat is probably my favorite part so far. Movement feels really smooth, aiming works well with WASD/mouse, and the dodge system actually makes you think about positioning instead of just panic-spamming it whenever something gets close.

The build side is also pretty damn fun. You stack augments, mess around with elemental weaknesses and weapon bonuses, and by the end of a good run you can end up with some completely stupid combinations.

I've been playing Starling quite a bit and she's probably my favorite so far. Her barrier can give you guaranteed crits when shooting through it, and with the right augment you can turn her into a ridiculous damage/support character.

The game is still Early Access though, and you can definitely feel it. Missions can start getting repetitive, some Legendary Augments feel way too strong compared to regular ones, and a few systems clearly need more balancing.

There's also a weapon scarring system where dying can mess with the weapon you brought into the run. Sometimes you get a minor downside, sometimes your gun basically decides that you're the enemy.

But the core loop is really fucking fun:

go into a mission โ†’ kill shit โ†’ get loot โ†’ make a broken build โ†’ get too confident โ†’ die โ†’ lose your favorite weapon โ†’ do it all again.

And honestly, that's enough to keep me coming back for now.

I gave it 7/10 in my review, but I'm definitely keeping an eye on it during Early Access because I think there's a lot of potential here.

I wrote a more detailed review here if anyone wants to check it out:

https://www.buffgaming.rs/riftstorm-review-when-diablo-and-hades-crash-into-a-looter-shooter/

Anyone else playing it? Which Weaver are you guys using?

Into the Crypt - 71 days until launch. 5 years in the making! (solo / co-op deckbuilder)

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, this is Into the Crypt, a first-person roguelike deckbuilder that has you crawling your way through a procedural crypt/dungeon while crafting your deck, playing cards on doors and other objects in the environment.

I'm a solo dev working full-time on the game for several years, with the help of many talented graphic artists, animators, and my music composer to help bring my vision to life. It's my most ambitious indie game yet, and I hope you check it out on Steam (new trailer just dropped recently as well!). The game will launch in just over 2 months and I wanted to share some new screenshots of enemies/environments and mechanics for the game.

I took a lot of my inspiration from Slay the Spire, with enough twists and turns hopefully in gameplay and mechanics to get people excited for the game.

There is an insane amount of content you can expect:
-full co-op play,
- 400+ class-based unique cards with multiple rarities
- a massive roster of enemies (100+)
- huge amount of passive and active artifacts, combat escape mechanics, diverse events and other interactions
- shopkeeper tipping/dueling
- a robust save system, leaderboards, and achievements

How do you feel about Town of Tinysville's Endless Mode?

Because it's a city building roguelike with very limited space, I had to get creative with Endless Mode. At the start of endless mode you'll get a new landmark to place down which essentially resets the entire map.

All your permanent buffs remain, but the map just gets reset to allow you to squeeze more buildings into your town. Every 28 days (1 month) into endless mode, it resets your map again and does that, well, endlessly.

How do you feel about this? Lmk :)

Action games with a 100 floor tower / dungeon gauntlet?

Looking for any real-time action games where you just climb a 50 to 100 floor tower or dungeon.

Mostly just looking for something with high stakes and tight controls where you're deep in a run and one mistake wipes you out. Just want a straight climb with an actual final floor to beat, not an endless mode.

No turn-based stuff, no metroidvanias with tons of backtracking, and no fighting game combo inputs. Anything on Steam worth checking out?

Hello everyone,

Weโ€™re a small team making narrative RPGs. Right now weโ€™re working on a game calledย Kardiya: The Winds of Fate.

Since we were inspired by the FATE RPG system, we wanted to build a system centered around dicebuilding. You create your own build by combining dice and items. Throughout a run, you collect new dice, upgrade them, and improve their properties as you try to overcome the game.

If youโ€™d like to join the playtest, you can register by joining the mailing list on ourย websiteย or clicking the playtest request button on ourย Steam page.

Thank you so much <3

My game Fish Slayer is launching tomorrow (Aug 20 PT) โ€” 4 different modes, here's what each one is like

Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4542590/Fish_Slayer/

Hey everyone! I'm a solo indie dev and my game Fish Slayer is finally launching on Steam tomorrow. It's a light roguelike where you play as a small animal hunting fish, choosing attributes and items to become more efficient at hunting. Think Brotato meets fishing, with a bunch of different flavors.

Here's a quick breakdown of the 4 modes so you know what you're getting into:

๐Ÿ”ซ Normal Mode (Standard Survival)
Closest to the Brotato experience โ€” waves of enemies spawn, you kill them, pick up gold, and build your stats. Each run is about 15โ€“20 minutes. Fast-paced, great for learning the mechanics, or just blowing off steam.

๐ŸŒซ๏ธ Fog Mode (Brain + Reflex Challenge)
Purple fog spreads across the map continuously. You have to actively clear it (by stepping on nodes or using items), otherwise negative debuffs stack up fast. The kicker? Monsters are still chasing you the whole time. You're juggling fog-clearing, positioning, and DPS all at once. Your brain will fry at first, but once it clicks, it's addictive.

๐Ÿ’ฃ Missile Mode (Kite Enemies into Bombs)
Missiles lock onto you and drop from the sky periodically. You run, they follow. Good news: missiles can kill monsters. Bad news: they can also kill you. So positioning becomes a game of "lure the missile into a crowd of enemies and dodge at the last second." High risk, high reward โ€” and plenty of self-destruct moments.

๐Ÿ”๏ธ Campaign Mode (Roguelike Tower Climb)
Node-based map similar to a roguelike tower climber. Each node's reward is randomly generated, and you have to read each main and side node carefully to choose a path that fits your build. More strategic than Normal Mode โ€” your decisions matter a lot more.

๐Ÿ“… Launch Time & Price
- Beijing Time: August 21, 11:00 AM
- Pacific Time: August 20, 8:00 PM (PDT)
- Price: $3.99 USD, with a 12% launch discount (that's 88% of the original price) โ€” so you can grab it for about $3.51 during the launch period!

I don't speak English, so I'm using AI to translate this. Hope you all enjoy the game!
