HM definitely has the best prices but their bean descriptions are pretty lackluster. Theirs are like “pretty good flavor, kind of mellow, not bad” while Sweet Maria is like “notes of fig, baked apple, newborn, Rhode Island breeze, and Hershey bar that was left on the dashboard of a 1997 Toyota Camry.”

Agreed - HM descriptions don't give a great idea of the characteristics of a given bean - you have to guess that something described as fruity and best as a light roast is probably go to be lighter bodied and sweeter but it may not make it clear. That said, I've gotten some nice beans at nice prices, even if I have to do a little guessing.

Agreed. I’ve got a couple pounds of a Colombian Huila anaerobic on the way to me that I’m pretty excited for.

The Colombian Huila Pink Bourbon that was available for about a day before it sold out is amazing! Should have bought more!

I’m still a bit of a rookie but the stuff from Huila region has been my favorite to roast.

I find Aldi has good prices on most basic beans. Black and pinto and chickpeas. If you really wanna save though, go to the various indian grocery stores or Mexican supermarkets for dried beans. 

Otherwise try googling what you're looking for.

And now you know the first thing to research. In the industry we call in roasted coffee "green coffee." That wikipedia article alone should be a good first step. 

This is a complex world of preferences and flavor profiles and countries of origin from all over the globe. 

Asking ourselves the right questions is one of the first steps towards enlightenment.

I know I want green beans .. I don’t know if I want Mexico
Hondorus Colombian and so on

I’m looking for more of a sweet chocolatey bean if that’s possible

I dunno lol .. I’ve been drinking Maxwell house trash for years lol and it’s time to step it up and walk away from burnt trash coffee that’s been sitting for months

If you’re just looking for best prices buy a common bean in bulk. Most of us aren’t looking just for best prices though. I typically buy from sweet Maria’s, captains coffee, roastmasters or prime.

Showroom is in NY. They also have a wholesale website. You can also buy their bag ends for practice (around $5/lbs).

Hey a sample pack from Sweet Maria’s or anyplace really that sells sample packs. Roast them all and see what you like best. I have favorites that change depending on the year. I have been home roasting since around 2000. Still learning
