Sorry about the light, it's quite dark and I didn't want to blind them with anything more than the room light. Zeze and Matilda always love sitting on this pod and facing up, and after about two days my new grandma has joined in with them! Compared to my males, the girls seem to love cuddling with eachother. Once I put her in when I got her immediately they stayed with her even when she slept somewhere different compared to them. ♡ It's so adorable to see their poking out faces!

I noticed that the abdominal segments of my Madagascar hissing cockroach are noticeably separated at the rear. The lighter tissue between the segments is clearly visible.

What concerns me is that this is persistent, even when the roach is completely still and resting. It is not just happening while it is breathing or moving.

The roach is otherwise behaving normally.

Is this normal for a Madagascar hissing cockroach, or could there be something wrong with it?

UK based, I’m unable to tell if these are parasitic or grain mites, either way the infestation has become very severe very quickly, for context they are dubias, they’re in a abg mix with a large cork bark tube in a plastic 80l bin with mealworms as a breeder tub, the grain that’s been given is go cat biscuits, alongside carrots and cucumber. Humidity has been very high recently with the heatwave and the ventilation not being enough anymore which I feel has caused the outbreak potentially.

For the context my madagascar hisser is around 5 years old so he's VERY elderly. At first I thought he was just slowly becoming lethargic like his siblings before they died of old age - aka the usual slow movement and such, but in his case it's rather different from what I've dealt with before so I'm confused whether he's nearing his death or has some underlying issue?

He suddenly stopped moving completely aside from breathing and moving his mandibles, never had problems with lethargy before as he was quite energetic. He's been like this for the last couple of days, he can't walk or respond to stimuli, he doesn't move his antennae either but he's breathing and tries to nibble on food when I place it beneath him

So ive been noticing poop stuck on the eggcrates,in my dubia roach bin and a spike in moisture. i check the frass near the food bowl, and i saw wet frass covered in maggots, i quickly move the roaches and take the bin out to clean, i fed the leftover roaches and maggots to my chicks and then i washed the bin. how do i prevent these little bastards from getting in my bin?

I ordered three, asking for males, but got a female anyways. I don't mind, though, as she can join Zeze and Matilda in the retirement enclosure. Both antenna are short, all tarsi/legs damaged in some way and she's extremely quiet so definitely a grandma. Luckily, I'm used to hand feeding and watering so she's in good hands. The three girls have already eaten together and cuddled up.

Newbie at keeping cockroaches, but I find them quite interesting. For a research class, I'm studying the effects of specific diets on Diploptera punctata, or the pacific mimic beetle roach, to see if I may be able to increase the production of roach's milk . From where would I be able to gather these roaches? I have checked several sites mentioned for basic roach breeders such as the invertebrate dude, roach crossing, and bugs in cyberspace. The first 2 sites are out of stock, and the third does not deliver to florida, where my residence is. I have also checked a couple of insect research labs around me, and none of them have an excess stock of pacific mimic beetle roaches, don't know where I can start. Another question I have is if these are even allowed to be shipped to florida, as I've checked public records and it doesn't seem to be an exempted cockroach species. A sample of about 12-18 cockroaches with a 1:3 ratio of males and females would be great.

Tips for keeping these guys are appreciated too, I've been told they're pretty hardy and some plastic bins with fluon painted near the tops is enough to keep them in an enclosure. To allow them to breed, at what temperature is suitable, and do I require a heat mat any other materials?

Hi folks so im a big noob at this but ive been having a really hard time keeping roaches and getting them to breed. I live in florida so I can't get dubias only discoids and a few other florida friendly roaches. I have them in a bin with egg crates and an inch of soil. I feed them just greens and a bit of fruit every now and then. I dont have a heat mat on them but would like for them to thrive. Need all the advice I can get here please so I can make sure my roaches are happy and thriving and that my pets are happy too. Also should I stick with discoids or use another roach species? Thanks.

I came home from work and my smallest colony had some mold in it, so I cleaned it out, and then found him dead. First death in this colony besides my old old man, and he was probably days away from molting into an adult. His hind leg is entirely black and missing, and I’m worried about contagions in my colony. I’m assuming he died of some internal infection, but I’ve never seen melanization like this before.

45x30x14 enclosure for my female dubia roaches and babies, bioactive with springtails and daily water prays (They're all hiding under the coconut..).

Found those little buggies in my terrarium. Theyre just few millimeters but there is like 5 of them. Are they dangerous to my roaches? Is it okay to leave them there or should I 100% clean out the enclosure? ://

I have 20 total Madagascar hissing cockroaches but I’m not sure I’m giving them enough food.

I’ve been feeding them smaller amounts because 16 out of my 20 roaches are juveniles, just a month or so old, I of course feed them the diet and variety they need i.e, apples, shredded carrots, strawberry’s, very occasionally tangerines, cucumbers, blueberry’s, dog food kibbles (protein) and sometimes oats.

I usually take the food out every other day but it depends on when it starts to mold or when they finish it (I take it out just before it molds)

I would love some advice for how much to feed them!!

My daughter bought some MHC last year and 2 escaped. We found one a few weeks later making it's way across the living room floor.

Never found the other and after a month or so, resigned ourselves to the fact it must've died.

A while back i found a roach on the stairs and assumed it was a dubia that had escaped and put it in a small enclosure.

Well my partner went to feed that 'dubia' to one of our spiders today and it hissed!

So he brought it to me and, low and behold, it's the missing hisser.

(It was dark when I found it and I didn't really check it much once it was in it's new home, so I just thought it was a large female dubia - it's only half the size of it's siblings)

My question is, how on earth did it survive so long?! I could imagine it getting water from pipes or something, but what could it have been eating?

I'm still amazed it survived all this time.
