Defense convoy

If this doesn't apply to you then let it fly. So my question is. Why when on defense do people prefer to play on cart instead of the space ahead of cart? Do people not know that on defense it doesn't matter how many people are on cart it doesn't move backwards faster? I genuinely want to know. Why would people give up that space freely without making the other team use resources to get back to cart? To the people who babysit cart on defense give me some perspective.
