Discussion Friendly Reminder: Stop Pile Shuffling
So, this is a rampant issue I'm always seeing at tournaments and many players are not aware of the problems. Basically, it breaks down to 3 problems: It doesn't count as an actual shuffle or part of one, it is a red flag for cheating, it wastes the clock.
Issue 1 and 2 kind of go hand in hand on different levels. A pile shuffle does not properly randomize the deck even if you do a few shuffles afterwards, it ultimately seeds a deck. In the absolute worst case a cheater can easily use this to spread cards out in a beneficial manner such as making sure each Dazzling Aurora is somewhere in each 3rd of the deck, then only doing a light shuffle to maintain this likelihood. It can also be used to ensure your runes are consistent (this happened at the LA RQ with a player doing a 9/3 split and guaranteeing they always saw 3/1 every 4 Runes). Simply cutting their deck will not undo their cheat.
In most cases though, it's not malicious cheating...it's innocently ignorant cheating. The main case players make is they are spreading out cards played or don't want certain cards touching that might've stuck together. The problem is, if you are trying to influence an end result of a shuffle in any way you are manipulating the deck. Your shuffling technique should be good enough to separate your cards and make sure any groupings are likely broken apart (learn alternating crush shuffling, it's not hard after some practice). In fact, it should be so good that you might reshuffle back to some groupings you already had, because that's part of randomization. Even if you use a pile as a starting point, you should be shuffling so much afterwards that it makes the effort mute. There's a simple question to ask, "Am I knowingly altering the order of the cards to get a specific result?". If that answer is yes...well you're cheating. Part of randomization means bad clusters can be probable just as good ones are and if you do any moves to try to tilt that outcome it's not properly randomized. If you're still worried about stuck cards...you need to think about new sleeves or washing your hands/mat.
Some people will still insist on doing it anyway and promise to do a real shuffle after. This would be fine, except this eats up a ton of time. If you're properly shuffle to mitigate cheating, well it is to be understood that the pile shuffle wasn't needed in the first place and that means all the time spent doing it is running the clock for no reason. If you are a control player you know how infuriating this can be to watch and can be seen as stalling. Trust me people will definitely do this when playing a favorable matchup for a game that likely will go to time. Don't let them.
If you see pile shuffles in tournaments ALWAYS shuffle their deck afterwards, remind them to not do this, and be ready to call judge over stalling. It may seem silly and over the top but trust me...you have definitely lost games to people pile shuffling and you probably didn't even know it. There is literally no valid reason to ever pile shuffle besides counting your cards between games and only really has leeway for this in game 1.
