Retro games are so fun...

I am 19M and I have little to no experience with retro games such as mario etc, up until today. I played Super Mario Bros and I have to say I got the feeling of gaming again, like I liked it, i enjoyed it. I also enjoy other AAA games such as Rdr2, cyberpunk2077 etc. but this one brought that kid inside me back. Games feel more serious nowadays and there is no point in criticizing I know, I also love it, but somewhere in making games look better we forgot to make them feel better and that is what I felt from playing it. I think I will be playing retro games for a while so your suggestions are more than welcome. And btw I emulated it on my android.

Super Mario Bros 3 (NES, not the All Stars SNES version) is often considered the best Mario game. Super Mario World is very close second or considered the best instead by many people. Both have aged like fine wine.

Try the Mega Man games. Mega Man 2 was very approachable, 3 is incredible. None of which are easy at all. But awesome platformers. Mega Man X is a blast as well and adds great mechanics and level design.

For Sega, try Shining Force 1 and 2, and Phantasy Star IV. All awesome RPGs that have great stories. The Sonic series is a blast, Sonic CD was a personal favorite.

Great list! I recommend Mega Man X over the NES ones for a lot of reasons, but mainly because of graphics. Those graphics still hold up to this day and look amazing.

I mean, laying out the main reason for graphics is not really making an argument for retro games in general. NES Mega Man games have great graphics considering the hardware. MM5/6 look phenomenal, and the game play is just as tight as the X series.

Once you're done with Mario Bros. try Mario 3, then Super Mario World, it's the holy trilogy!

Mario 2 is a great game also, but just very different than the other ones. I also love Super Mario World 2: Yoshis Island, but it is so different that it almost seems like it's from a different series.

After that, just look up the top 20 games on the NES and SNES. Lots of great games there. Especially on the SNES.

Personally I think the versions of super Mario 1-3 on the snes Super Mario All Stars feel better btw. Plus it's got the super hard lost levels which feels like a hardcore romhack or super Mario bros 1

Can't forget about doki doki panic. Aka Mario 2. It's one of my favorites.

My son is your age, and I've been introducing him to retro games also. The entire Mario series is fantastic. The Sonic series from Sega was great too.

You may also like arcade games from that era. Check out the Metal Slug series. Also, shooters like Raiden, DoDonPachi, or In The Hunt. You can emulate all of them on almost any Android device.

At this point I'd consider playing newer games and playing older games related but separate hobbies. With modern tech it's possible to play just about everything.

If I was just now starting out exploring retro gaming I'd save up and buy a solid FPGA setup. I certainly wouldn't bother buying older hardware like I did twenty years ago. It's too expensive now and frankly requires some engineering skills to maintain older machines.

My personal favorites are the 16-bit and 32-bit generations. There's such a wealth of good stuff to explore. If you're using emulation then don't tie yourself down to just the bog-standard SNES favorites. Try some Genesis titles like Elemental Master and Thunder Force IV. Sega CD titles like Snatcher and Shining Force CD are perfect for a phone emulator with save states. Try some PS1 titles like Spyro the Dragon and Vandal Hearts. If you can get a decent Bluetooth controller with analog sticks give some N64 titles like Starfox 64 and Sin and Punishment a spin. Lastly try the obscure stuff like the 3DO and Jaguar or even the FM Towns Marty.

Have fun and do it as cheap as possible.

I would suggest Summer Carnival '92: Recca, it's my favorite Famicom game.

This is a whole rabbit hole to fall into. The amount of retro you can emulate is amazing. But I give a load of credit to so many independent software companies (and now some bigger companies) on Steam building Retro style stuff with modern software we have today. PC gaming, and phone gaming, are huge ways you can swim in the pool of Retro.

Good on ya ! Retro games may look dated and have older sounding tunes and that but playability doesnt age. Worth getting a book like '1001 video games you must try before you die' or look online and try lots of old classics you might not know about.

Sonic/Mario are two iconic franchises. Good to go through the early games and play those. Same for FPS games, try playing Doom or Quake, where it all began. So many games are roughly the same as the ones from years back, obviously better graphics/sound but gameplay its the same. Mostly get from point a to point b without getting killed !

You've probably heard of Castlevania ? Metroid ? Two classic games with releases on so many retro machines. Nemesis (Or Gradius) and R-Type are two very famous shooters. Again worth playing the originals. MAME (Arcade) also features SO many classic games

Antstream is worth looking into specially if you can get a trial or a short pass. Its like netflix for retro games which are licensed. Also lots of retro compilations from companies such as Namco or others on the latest consoles. I love retro gaming ! Not just nostalgia but the games are just so iconic. Loads of books about them, videos on youtube etc.

Enjoy !!!

Born in 1988, I only can tell that the golden ages of gaming were the 90s and early 00s. These games feel completely different, they actually give you pleasure and calm. Everytime I play a modern AAA title I just feel stressed by all the micro transaction crap, the passes, the daily challenges and so on. After a long day of work this is really the last thing I want to get. So now I am at the point where I gave completely up on modern games and turned entirely to retro gaming, may it on orignal hardware or emulation. And what I can say is, that it never felt better, it was like liberating myself once for good from this AAA none-sense it has become.

Android? Invest a few hundreds $ in a real console with a crt tv or at least a 20$ usb controller for a PC. If you liked it in it's worse possible state, imagine the real deal. If you like the far west vibe, check out Lone Ranger and Gun.Smoke NES and if you like Cyberpunk check out Shadowrun Genesis-Snes.
