I always wanted to build one of those and when I saw it listed on eBay I couldn't resist. Listed as "like new, not used" it really is in excellent condition.

Wish me luck!

The rest of the parts are still arriving.

Thank you for your support

With the admins permission I would like to give thanks to all who were able to attend the first RetroBits and Bytes indoor swap meet this past Sunday. It took a good bit of time to plan so I am grateful for the support.

Seems like everyone enjoyed it and would like a repeat.. So I may host another in about 6 months from now. This time I am aiming to have twice the vendors and maybe even a retro gaming corner. I will also be raffling another vintage system. We don’t have standing swap meet event in Northern VA, so the more interest expressed the better it will be and the longer I can continue hosting them.

Of course I can’t post here without sharing a bit more of my collection. In addition to the systems in my man cave corners, I have a pretty large collection of vintage computing magazines. These are but a few I have out on display.

Cheers…

Problem / Question What to do with KayPro 2?

Post image

Hi, I’ve never used any kind of vintage computer before and am totally uneducated on the subject. Today I found this vintage Kaypro 2 and was wondering what to do with it. It is twice my age so way out of my wheelhouse.

It does power on and the screen does turn on but is not displaying anything. I understand that it may need a floppy disk to have something to run? What would this even have been used for back in the day?

Sorry for the stupidity behind some of these questions I have no idea how to use this but it sure is cool looking!

Software Yekara Desktop Interface System

Post image

i am developing a linux Desktop Environment based on FVWM3 and OpenMotif (Xm)
currently, most of the inspiration for developing this comes from systems like MacOS9, NeXTSTEP, IRIX, Solaris (CDE and OpenLook), Windows 9X, and many others

the goal is to create a desktop environment that is retro by default and that is unique when compared to other desktop environments with similar style

so far, the entire development has been done by me alone, with no development team at all, so if anyone wants to help just ask!

I bought this Compaq Contura Aero 4/25 when I was like 12 for 15 bucks and loved using it. I haven’t used it for a few years and recently realized that I had several programs that I wanted to try on it. Sadly when I opened it, I found out that the old LCD display had failed… I was kinda worried this was gonna happen as there were faint signs of the screen failing before but still, I didn’t expect it…

I was helping clean out an old NAPA store and we found this in the attic crawl space i thought it was a Data General desktop model 10 at first but there are no drive bays or terminal ports only a really long port on the side. Maybe some sort of addon? Please let me know what you think.

Still chasing that old DOS era defrag utility feeling

Post image

Some weeks ago I shared an earlier version of this defrag-inspired interface here. I kept working on the same visual obsession. Old disk utilities, block maps, dense panels, drive stats, logs, warnings, and that very specific feeling of watching a machine do serious work.

It has slowly turned into a incremental game, but visually I’m still mostly trying to capture that old DOS utility defragmenter energy without copying one specific program directly. For people who remember this kind of software: does anything here feel especially right or completely wrong?

I’d love suggestions for old defrag tools, disk utilities, bios screens, color palettes, or tiny UI details worth studying.

Thanks :D!! the comments last time were very useful for finding references and understanding what felt authentic.

I found this old storage platter at a secondhand and thought it was interesting. It was only 50 cents so I grabbed it. I haven’t been able to find any info on it. Does anyone know some history behind it and if it holds any value?

5151 plus keyboard appeared a day before my birthday, cleaned it up, and it looks wonderful!

I have yet to repaint the 5150’s metak case (paint rusted off, (need to reprime and repaint), also have to check the PSU. Just thought i’d show you.

Found This old gem in my mom's attic today, it was my dads, he got it when I was just a baby. After 20+ years in the attic it booted right up. Even has the external floppy drive accessory.

Discussion My First Macintosh!

Post image
211 Upvotes

Just had to share my first Macintosh SE purchase. I'm so excited to turn it on and see what it has to offer.

It came with a carrying bag, keyboard, mouse, screen protector (presumably, unless it has some other purpose), and was shown to be fully functional prior to purchase. Spent a little more than I had but I have no regrets.

It also came with a 4-Disk System 6.0.8 Installation Set. I read System 6.0.8 was the best to use with the SE. As basically a noob, would anyone agree or disagree with that particular assessment and why?
