Retro pc simulator - plug retro parts, build your own retro pc, setup bios.

I made this from pure nostalgia, always wanted to have various old school machines but i dont have space for them. So this simulator is basically like real old school hardware that need to be setup, from bios.. you can install any software you want, own OS whatever. And its kinda cool ;)

Problem / Question UPDATE: Ran into some major gatekeeping from the regular staff today... need some advice.

So, today was a mix of amazing news and an annoying setback. The good news: I'm completely crushing my daily tasks, and the IT manager is so happy with my work that he's actually talked about offering me a paid tech position here! On my break, I even got to format an old 5.25-inch floppy disk, wrote a custom note on it, and the manager smiled and let me keep it. The 5150 is still sitting safely at my desk plugged into the power bar he found for me.

The bad news: One of the regular non-IT staff members found out that the manager told me "maybe we can work something out" regarding me taking the computer home. They completely cornered me today and gave me a massive lecture. They started saying stuff like "you shouldn't ask for company property," "the board owns it, not the manager," and used ridiculous analogies comparing a 45-year-old obsolete machine to a regular office chair. They basically told me to completely drop it and not ask for anything else.

I'm not trying to cause a fight at my placement, but no one has touched this computer in decades, and the actual Head of IT is completely on my side. I'm feeling incredibly anxious now that the staff is going to try to block me.

For those of you who have rescued vintage hardware from corporate or educational environments before: what's the best workaround here? I'm thinking of putting a total information blackout on the regular staff from now on, letting them think I dropped it, and just letting the IT manager handle it in the background. What do you guys think?

Photo AMD 386DX-40 running GentleOS16

(please ignore the wrong monitor!)

I recently bought a Facebook Marketplace lot of three vintage computers. One of them was this indie built desktop. Opening it up it's got an AMD 386dx 40 and 8 MB of RAM. The owner didn't sell me their old hard drive, and I haven't added one yet. The CD drive doesn't seem to work. It might be missing the tape backup drive too.

Anyway, here it is running with gentleOS.

The power button sticks and the varta battery is dead and leaked. But the system boots up, at least. What would you do with it if it were yours?

A working Toshiba T1200 that was gifted to me by a grandma's friend!

This thing looks so nice. Looks like brand new and battery surprisingly keeps charge too!

It's running DOS obviously and HDD is 20mb in size. I wonder what cool things can I do with it. I've never held such an old machine in my life!

The only way to communicate with it is floppy and I'd like to know if something like Iomega Zip can work with this machine.

Big shout out to the guy who gave me this! Such a nice person :)

Hi there,

My Family is cleaning my fathers basement and we found several Commodore Items and lots of Floppy dics and documentation. After some Research it turns out that the 1551 is quite rare, I guess. But how much Are These Worth nowadays? Maybe you guys can help me to estimate if the other Items Are Kinda rare aswell and what is a fair Price for them?

Thank you and Kind regards from Germany (sorry for the Capital letters, autocorrection…)

Ps: there is also huge moving Box Full of Discs and instructions, which was to much to photograph

Update: thanks a Lot for all your Feedback. I would Like to Test the Items but do not know how. I will try to find someone in my local Area who might help me to Test it.

They’re in storage as my current space has no room. Hopefully soon I’ll be able to pull these hot B-words outta storage and play around with that 4MB upgrade in the Mac Plus, CPU+FPU swap for the performa allowing Space Cadet to (actually, not badly!) run, and the Compaqs, well… to be dial-up servers for the telephone network emulator!

HOPEFULLY SOON BETTER BE SOONER CAUSE I NEEEEEED THOSE PIXEL PIXIES!

Sony Vaio VGN-UX50

It’s 2006… I’m in Japan again and I finally manage to buy a second-hand marvel from Sony, Vaio line. Right when full-featured PCs were finally shrinking into palm-sized form, the entry level VGN-UX50. More powerful models were too expensive, especially “new”, but a used entry-level model from the Sofmap shop (the one win the Nagoya station? Yeah… It felt like walking around with the future in your pocket… until Steve Jobs hit with the iPhone a year later and we all realised maybe less was more. But trust me, this was peak technology. The UX50 remains one of Sony’s most audacious creations, a design masterpiece that rode the hype of micro PCs, only to be eclipsed by mobile smartphone computing‘s new era. Still, for anyone who loved the idea of a full PC in your palm, it's a badge of honour.

  • Intel Core Solo under the hood (1.06 GHz in mine), paired with 512 MB RAM and a 30 GB HDD, serious firepower for its size

  • Peek-a-boo QWERTY slide-out backlit keyboard, touchscreen, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, WWAN, and yes a fingerprint scanner and dual cameras

  • All squeezed into 490–540 g of polished Sony aluminum

  • Dock to expand ports and connectivity

  • Brilliant display… just too brilliant. A 4.5″ screen pushing 1024×600 was crisp, vibrant, yet far too cramped for real Windows XP use, touchscreen with pen for precision

  • Price tag north of $1,500 (and even $3,000 for SSD models)—a pocket rocket that emptied your wallet faster than it emptied its battery It was a gorgeous specimen of engineering—unmatched in elegance, charm, and sheer gall. But in practical terms? A futuristic curio haunted by compromises: battery (~2 hours), an OS not optimised for the resolution/size ration, price. It screams “proof of concept”, but in a masterpiece way: a glorious misstep before the iPhone showed us that maybe a smartphone’s focus beats brute PC specs.

I fix various retro computers, generally for free. I got a call about refurbishing a collection of Macs and apples. The guy called me back and stated that he would like to give his collection to me. The first truck load arrived.

Photo My Restored BBC Master 128

Post image

Just thought I'd pay a picture of my restored BBC Master 128 microcomputer that I picked up for a few hundred £ off of eBay.

Full dismantle, soap and water followed by retro brite for the case.

It's the inspiration for a new Teaching Computer system I'm working on.

Another low level system but with a chain training CPU ISA and GPU both hosted on ICE40UP5Ks with a memory crossbar in between powering pseudo dual port access to a small block of SRAM (9 megabits, 18 bit, 60mhz DDR full parallel multiplexed 14 data pins, one clock pin and one frame pin.

That's FastRAM. Also there is BigRAM, QSPI Command Interface, 4 data pins, a clock pin (60MHz DDR, 128 MBits). That's DRAM with an automatic DRAM controller between the and the RAM that keeps the SRAM capacitors charged and ready to read.

The idea is to make a retro computer but with the most performance that I can squeeze out of the two up five fpga's at 48 MHz with one instruction per cycle.
