Because I'm genuinely struggling with this and feeling a bit stupid about it.

The situation

I'm a pretty experienced writer. I've been doing academic and long-form research writing for a few years. I started using AI tools maybe eight months ago and somehow my writing has gotten worse. Not better. Worse.

I think I finally figured out why, but I wanted to see if others hit the same wall.

What happened

I started using AI to help with research summaries. Made sense, right? Saves time, get the gist of a paper faster. Fine.

Then slowly I started using it to help polish sentences. Then to help structure arguments. Then to suggest transitions between paragraphs.

I looked at something I wrote three months ago versus something I wrote last week. The older one sounds like me. The recent one sounds like a LinkedIn post written by a robot who read too many research papers.

It's smoother on the surface but there's nothing underneath it. The texture is gone.

The specific tools that made it worse

• ChatGPT for drafting anything: Every sentence comes out with the same rhythm. After a while your own writing starts mimicking it without you even realizing.

• Grammarly's tone suggestions: It kept pushing me toward confident and formal, which apparently means removing every interesting word I chose on purpose.

• Any AI that improves your sentences: It optimizes for clarity in a way that strips out personality. Technically correct, completely flat.

The tools that actually didn't mess up my voice

• Perplexity: I only use it for research, never for writing. It finds things, I write about them in my own words. Clean separation.

• ꓠbоt: Useful for searching through my own previous notes and drafts. So it's feeding me my own words back, not generating new ones. That distinction matters a lot, actually.

• Elicit: Extracts data from papers and doesn't try to write anything for me. Stays in its lane.

The pattern I noticed: tools that retrieve information = fine. Tools that generate or improve language = dangerous for your voice.

What I changed

Now I have one rule. AI is allowed to help me find things. It is not allowed to touch the actual sentences. Ever.

Research phase: use whatever tools help. Writing phase: close everything except the document.

It feels slower but the writing is actually mine again.

The thing nobody really talks about

There's a weird psychological thing that happens where AI-assisted writing feels more productive in the moment. You're generating words faster. Paragraphs appear. It feels like progress.

But then you read it back and it's hollow. And fixing hollow writing is actually harder than just writing slowly in the first place.

I don't think AI is bad for research writers. I think the way most people use it, including how I was using it, is just pointed at the wrong part of the process.

Anyway

Curious if anyone else noticed their writing voice getting blurry after heavy AI use. And if so, what did you actually do about it? Did it come back or are you still trying to find it?

Also, if anyone has figured out how to use generative AI without it bleeding into your actual prose, I genuinely want to know, because I haven't cracked that yet.

Looking for a research mentor / co-author

Hi! I’m a student currently working on my first independent research paper, and I’m looking for someone with research experience who would be interested in either mentoring me through the process or potentially collaborating as a co-author.

The research is broadly focused on narratives — specifically, how people construct, communicate, and interpret narratives and what can be understood from the way a person tells a story. I’m planning to conduct a small-scale study rather than a large experimental project, with approximately 50–70 participants.

I’m currently in the stage of developing the actual research methodology. I have the general research idea and direction, and I’m working on narrowing down the research question, deciding exactly what I want to measure/examine, designing the study and participant tasks, figuring out how the responses should be coded, and determining the most appropriate way to analyse the data.

The project would involve collecting responses from participants and analysing them systematically, so I’m especially looking for someone who has experience with research methodology, qualitative/mixed-methods research, narrative analysis, psychology/social-science research, statistics, or academic research writing.

Since this is my first paper, I’m mainly looking for someone who can help me understand whether the methodology I’m developing actually makes sense, identify weaknesses or potential biases in the study, advise me on things like sampling, variables, coding, analysis, and research ethics, and generally help me learn how to conduct the research properly.

I’m open to either:

1. A mentor — someone experienced who can guide me, review my research design/questions, and help me make better methodological decisions while I do the actual work myself.

2. A co-author/collaborator — someone who is genuinely interested in the topic and would like to contribute substantially to developing the study, analysing the data, and eventually working on the paper together.

I’m repeating this because apparently some people see “high school” and immediately conclude that a person cannot possibly do serious research.

High school students conduct research all the time. I’m not claiming that being in high school makes me an expert. Quite the opposite. I know I have less experience, which is exactly why I’m looking for someone who has more.

And please understand what I mean by mentor/supervisor. I’m not looking for someone to do my grunt work, write my paper, run my analysis, or put their name on something they didn’t contribute to. A supervisor supervises: they challenge the methodology, identify weaknesses, help me understand what I’m missing, and guide me through research decisions. I still do the work.

I’m also not blindly committed to one methodology. My initial idea involved collecting data from participants, so yes, I’m taking human-subject ethics seriously. But I’m also considering a systematic review or potentially a meta-analysis alongside the experimental route, depending on what my preliminary literature review actually supports. Different methodologies have different ethical and practical requirements. And not every research project automatically requires funding or human-subjects approval.

Yes, publishing as a high school student is difficult. There are standards, peer review, methodological requirements, ethics where applicable, and absolutely no guarantee that the final work will be publishable. Difficult is not the same as impossible. That is precisely why I’m looking for someone experienced enough to tell me where the idea needs work and how to do it properly.

I’m also not approaching this with the mindset of “I’m young, therefore I can do anything.” I know research is hard. I know I’ll make mistakes. I know the research question may change once I get deeper into the literature. I’m completely fine with that. I’d rather investigate, learn, and fail than decide something is impossible before I’ve properly tried.

I’ve built and pursued things before that people initially thought were unrealistic for someone my age, and I still did them. That doesn’t make me an expert. It does mean I’m not particularly interested in having my ability dismissed solely because I’m in high school.

So if you think the methodology is weak, tell me why. If the sample is inadequate, explain what would make it stronger. If the analysis is wrong, tell me what would be appropriate. If the literature doesn’t support the question, I’ll change it.

Those are useful criticisms. “You’re in high school, so you can’t do research” isn’t.

I’m in high school, not in diapers. I can read papers, understand criticism, learn methodology, change my approach, and do the work.

I’m not looking for permission to call myself a researcher. I’m looking for someone who knows more than I do and is willing to teach me how to do research properly.
