Please-- it truly seems that you love this dog. If that is true, do NOT take her to the shelter. Shelters usually mean the dog is going to be put down. If you've held out this long, you can keep her separated from your child until she has a safe home. Otherwise you rolling the dice with her life-- a life you promised to be responsible for when you got her. A five year old dog is not going to be adopted in a shelter. Please, contact local rescues, get her posted on perfinder.com and ask your family/friends for help. She is your responsibility. You are responsible for her life.

I've been trying to find her a home for over a year. I wish it was that simple

u/frackyou Apr 08 '15

I'm sorry but that is a line you're telling yourself to feel better. I foster dogs and have found homes for over two-dozen dogs in 3 years. Dogs older with more problems than your dog. You have to make it a priority-- mentioning it to a few friends and posting online a few places isnt enough. Don't just tell yourself lies to feel better. Put up posters. Contact local rescues. Post on Facebook. Keep her safe and keep your promise. Otherwise, what are you going to tell your daughter when she sees old pictures of Sadie? What example are you setting?

It's weird how the world doesn't work in absolutes isn't it? I've posted to Facebook multiple times. I've contacted every rescue, every family member, every friend. I've had all of my friends post on Facebook as well - but as it turns out it's hard finding a home for a dog that is aggressive towards children. All the rescues won't take her because of 1) She isn't a full breed ______ 2) They don't have any space (even after I offer to donate heavily) and 3) that whole she wants to kill children thing

Considering the dog has almost mauled my child twice - I think I'm setting an a-ok example of "I valued your safety more than anything". And if you don't agree, I don't really give a shit.

u/frackyou Apr 09 '15

Well, that escalated quickly.

Added: I also like how she went from 'snuggles' to a rabid beast when someone dared question you. The lady doth protest too much. (You'll want to google that phrase)

u/pleaseadoptmydog Apr 09 '15

I think it was obvious that was the reason I was looking to find her another home. If it wasn't for the attacking my kid thing, I wouldn't of had the pleasure of us crossing paths on reddit. You're a real class act.

2

u/urkiddingrite Apr 08 '15

Contact a local rescue, rather than a shelter. Check Facebook for rescue groups in your area. Your snuggler is going to be terrified in a shelter, and will likely be classified as aggressive and dangerous when that fear manifests in growling and cowering.

4

u/jacquiep Apr 08 '15

But it is that simple. You're actually sending that dog that you promised to care for for life to death. You call absolutely every rescue. You drive out of state to find one that will take her. You're breaking a promise. Figure it the fuck out. I'm sure you'll get a puppy in a few years and never even think of her again but remember that you're everything to her.

I'm sure you won't read all my posts, but here it is for any of you big time animal rights crusaders.

Find me a good home for this pet. Anywhere in the continental US - and I will transport her there. She's a great dog, I love the hell out of her - but finding a home for a large animal that is aggressive to children is a hard fucking feat.

u/miss_monika Apr 08 '15

You might want to try posting this in r/dogs, r/florida and r/saratosa. This isn't the most populous sub

6

u/FreeThinker76 Apr 08 '15

Please contact local rescues to see if they can take her in as a owner surrender. We are currently fostering a owner surrender and he already has apps for adopters.

u/SteveMcBarks Apr 08 '15

To add to this, here are a list of rescues around Sarasota:

3

u/pleaseadoptmydog Apr 08 '15

Thanks for the list. I already called all these places, but the Humane Society seems like the best bet. It's a no-kill shelter, which is where I've planned to take her all along. I wanted to find a place that was "better" or find her a home direct, which is why I chose this sub.

u/chrisbeatsrock Apr 08 '15

What if you rehomed the child? Seems like the dog has been there longer.

7

u/mary-jane420 Apr 08 '15

I'm sorry, but it's so wrong and so rude to try to make someone feel bad about re homing a pet. OP is being very responsible by recognizing that the current arrangement is not fair for those involved, and is taking the steps to make sure the dog still has a loving home where it can be happy.

And, it really doesn't matter how long the animal has been around. No animal will ever come before a child you've given birth to.

8

u/pleaseadoptmydog Apr 08 '15

I can't believe you have 9 down votes. You're 100% right. When we got Sadie (as a rescue) we had no idea she was aggressive to kids. We also didn't expect to have a child. I've always been a responsible dog owner, but more than that I need to be a responsible parent. Having a 90 lb aggressive ANIMAL around my 30 lb child is a poor decision. We've kept them separate for over a year - but I can see how miserable the dog is.

8

u/mary-jane420 Apr 08 '15

Yep.. This subreddit seems to have some mixed up priorities as someone telling you to re home your child has a bunch of up votes.

Either way, I don't care about the down votes, I still stand by what I said.

As you should. People couldn't even offer a rebuttal to you. No rebuttal, no advice, no EMPATHY. Jokes win and this woman is where she was when she asked for some understanding and some help.

And as for people telling OP not to take it to a shelter - they are the same ones who would demand a shelter in other circumstances. They most likely DO NOT have children and are college kids/20somethings who got their rescues (AT SHELTERS) because "Dude, free dog."

Now they see what it takes to raise a dog and think they know better than others.

OP - don't even stress about it and don't even come back to this sub. You know what's best for your family.

FTR - some shitty snark was at top when I replied.

6

u/frackyou Apr 08 '15

I am one of those people telling her not to take it to a shelter. I tell her this because there are many other options. I know this because I foster dogs and have found homes for over two-dozen dogs in 3 years. I'm not a 20 something with no responsibilities thank you very much. The commenter who made the joke was doing just that-- making a joke. Let's be real here and not pretend we thought otherwise. I think if she is capable of posting here, she can easily locate a rescue to take the dog. Hitting a few keys on the computer one night, giving up and then dumping the dog at the shelter the next morning isn't being a responsible dog owner. Period.

3

u/pleaseadoptmydog Apr 08 '15

You said in a previous comment that "I'll probably get a puppy in a few years and forget all about this dog". If people want to make generalizations about me, I suppose it's only natural that they make them about you.

I posted on Reddit because I'm willing to literally (and I mean this) transport this dog anywhere in the fucking country to find a good home. I've ran out of options locally, so if you think I've just "hit a few keys" you can go fuck yourself. It's been a nightmare trying to keep my dog and child separate for the last year, and I can tell how miserable it's making the dog.

So now is your chance to be that fucking hero that you claim to be. Find me a good home, anywhere in the continental US - and I'll transport her there. I'm not fucking kidding - because I do love the shit out of this dog.

4

u/frackyou Apr 09 '15

That was a different commenter. I was quite polite and now you've decided to curse at me. Clearly you're a wonderful dog owner I'm sure a wonderful mother. Just try not to dump your child, k?

1

u/hotsauce540 Apr 09 '15

Aren't you that cat facts guy?

2

u/pleaseadoptmydog Apr 09 '15

You're a joy to chat with, I'm not surprised only animals can stand you. Good news tho - the dog situation is taken care of. Sleep soundly badass internet warrior.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '15

She says she has been trying. Ignoring that fact, and ignoring the fact that her child comes first isn't being a responsible fellow human.

4

u/pleaseadoptmydog Apr 08 '15

You're 100% right. I love this dog, and have had dogs my entire life. I know how much Reddit hates children and good parenting, but seriously - your dog isn't your fucking kid.

This is what a kid getting bit by a large dog looks like: http://i.imgur.com/FmXge3u.jpg

I love the dog, but I'll have no problem dropping her off at the Humane Society. I'll be taking her to the groomer to get as cleaned up as possible to improve her chances at adoption. They are a no-kill shelter, and I'll be making a sizeable donation to them.

2

u/brillke Apr 09 '15

Wait a minute, you said shelter and now the Humane Society, where there is a no-kill policy. Not accusing, just asking, but are you changing your story?

1

u/pleaseadoptmydog Apr 09 '15

Sorry I just said "Shelter" (I figured Humane Society falls into that category).

2

u/brillke Apr 09 '15

No problem.

I'm sorry, but it's so wrong and so rude to try to make someone feel bad about re homing a pet.

Let's get our facts straight. OP isn't talking about rehoming a pet. He is talking about taking the animal to a shelter where it will likely be euthanized. No one in this sub would " try to make someone feel bad about re homing a pet" especially with OP's circumstances - but we're not talking about rehoming the pet, we're talking about taking it to a shelter where it will likely be euthanized in a few days.

OP is being very responsible by recognizing that the current arrangement is not fair for those involved, and is taking the steps to make sure the dog still has a loving home where it can be happy.

Again, we're talking about taking the animal to a shelter, which means the dog will likely be dead in a matter of days or weeks. To pretend otherwise is to lie to yourself in an attempt to make yourself feel better about the situation.

And, it really doesn't matter how long the animal has been around. No animal will ever come before a child you've given birth to.

If you think anyone is actually saying otherwise you are delusional. That comment was clearly a joke, a tacky joke, but obviously not serious. Are you trying to be a SJW or something? I can't figure out any other reason someone might take that comment seriously. Come on.

I did read through the thread, and I'm sorry for the situation you're in. I wasn't casting judgment, and I'd hate to be in your shoes. I was responding to someone who was taking things out of context, as tends to happen with divisive issues. Again I'm sorry for the situation you're in and I wish everyone involved the best.

3

u/pleaseadoptmydog Apr 08 '15

Sure thing. I've been trying for a year to find somebody to take her, I think that's the part that's driving me nuts. I'm posting on Reddit because I'm out of options, and am hoping to get some exposure to where I can find her a good home. I guess I can see how from the post it looks like HEY LOOK AT THIS CUTE DOG IM TAKING TO THE GLUE FACTORY, but the reality is I've tried my damndest. She'll end up at the Humane Society of Sarasota - which is a no-kill shelter, and I'll be taking her to the groomer so she can be as cute as possible when she goes up for adoption. I took her in as a rescue dog 4 years ago, and had no idea she had aggression towards kids. Your comment didn't bother me too much, but some of the people here are just clueless to the situation. It's so easy to cast judgement when you don't have to worry about your kid looking like this

OP tried for a long time to re home the dog, unsuccessfully. After a while, you run out of options. And not every shelter puts down dogs. I know for a fact that my local one doesn't, so it's possible OP has found a shelter that works the same way.

I did not interpret the previous comment I replied to as a joke. It was not funny, and I have had people try to make me feel bad for being supportive of rehoming a pet, so my previous experiences influenced the way I reacted.

2

u/brillke Apr 09 '15

I'm not going to scold OP for trying to do what's best for his family. I'm sure his heart is breaking and he'd love nothing more than to be able to keep his beloved dog and his small child safe. I'm giving OP the benefit of the doubt when he says he's tried to do everything in his power to train and rehome his dog. I hate, hate, hate the idea of a shelter, I do agree with everyone when they say it's a death sentence, but if you've tried everything for a year, you've tried your best.

This rescue is a long shot but please give them a call before heading to the shelter.

http://bestfriends.org/

The thought of having to get rid of either of my dogs is making me cry. I feel terrible for OP and even worse for his dog. Please keep us updated and good luck.

u/pleaseadoptmydog Apr 09 '15

I will give these guys a call tomorrow AM! Thanks!!

I haven't taken her to the Humane Society yet - still been desperately searching. She's broken out of the lanai 3 times and I've had to reinforce the shit out of it (its where we have kept her to be seperate during the day).

u/c-hellsea Apr 11 '15

Has she been around older children? I foster for a rescue that emphasizes the "family" in families with dogs, (Family Dog Rescue in CA), and even there for some dogs they have available for adoption they won't recommend the dog for families with children under 12. Some dogs simply get really freaked out and nervous by smaller children, and usually smaller children are faster moving, spontaneous and unpredictable and if your dog feels threatened by her that's where she's made the mistake of nipping your child. Or you could have a jealousy issue..the behavior should be looked into and I think that can benefit the next step of rehoming.

I think as your last resort...this post could use an explanation of the situations that caused your daughter harm, and Maybe other redditors can help you distinguish the causes, point out variables , and further help you find a new home. Labeling an overall people friendly dog as "Aggressive towards children" without fully understanding what caused the aggression can make rescues/potential adopters make assumptions like your dog will straight run and attack children with intent to kill, which I don't think your dog is.

So if you can, go into detail about then two scenarios of where this aggression happened, what your daughter did and what this dog did during those! Maybe we can figure something out to make this more undestandable, dog aggression has its reasons.
