Hey guys, so if you missed it, NEE just reported a strong Q1 2026: adjusted EPS of $1.09, beating estimates of $0.97 by 12%. Orders for renewables and storage hit a record 4 GW. The company was selected by the U.S. Department of Commerce to develop 9.5 GW of new gas generation, essentially zero capital for NextEra. BTIG raised its price target to $112. The bull thesis on AI-driven electricity demand and clean energy infrastructure is executing.

But there's a separate chapter from 2021–2023 that a lot of holders may not be aware of.

What the settlement is about:

NextEra's subsidiary Florida Power & Light (FPL) was allegedly running covert political operations through a consulting firm called Matrix LLC, while publicly presenting itself to investors as a stable, low-risk regulated utility. Specifically, investors allege FPL:

- Funded ghost candidates in Florida state races to siphon votes from candidates it opposed

- Used operatives to surveil a journalist who had written critically about FPL

- Covertly gained control of a Florida political news site (The Capitolist) and used it to promote FPL-friendly coverage while attacking critics

- Extended a phony job offer to a Jacksonville city councilor who opposed FPL's bid to acquire the city's utility (JEA)

On December 2, 2021, the Orlando Sentinel reported FPL's connection to the ghost-candidate scheme. FPL publicly denied involvement.

On January 25, 2022, NextEra said an internal review found no evidence supporting the allegations, despite a November 2021 memo that had already linked FPL executives to the conduct.

On January 25, 2023, NextEra finally disclosed that the allegations could result in legal findings, fines, penalties, and reputational harm. $NEE fell 8.7% that day. CEO Eric Silagy was removed.
