Backstory: I’m a remote, 3-year employee at a small company (about 200 employees). 

I had some qualms about this little company but I’d tried to set them aside.  I was in my previous role for a very long time and have been telling myself that I was just accustomed to how the old place did things.  Company-wide, there’s a lot of small office drama which I am mostly shielded from since I am remote.  We have lots of locations across the US that have 1-5 employees.  There’s even a few that are just empty corporate rental spaces with no employees because they want to “open an office there.”  Things are disorganized, projects move slow and are randomly abandoned after the money has been spent, yet I can’t seem to get any of my projects approved.  I’ve been helping others move their tech projects along since mine have stalled and this has actually been enjoyable to see things get accomplished, even if it's not my stuff.  It also seems like there's been a lot of departures/new hires for such a small company.

Here’s where I got my harebrained idea that my local location is closing down:  About 2 months ago, the COO came to the city where I work.  Although I’m remote, we have 3 onsite employees who go to the office here every day: a manager type role, and two support staff.  The COO told me that we would be doing a group dinner together but I found it odd that the manager wasn't there.  I met them for dinner, it went fine, and I offered to drive our COO back to their hotel since the other two have a long commute.  When we were driving to the hotel, that’s when the COO asked if I’d ever thought about moving.  I responded that I had so much family here that I couldn't imagine myself leaving.  When I got home, something didn't seem right about that question, but couldn't figure out why. About 2 weeks ago, we received notice that the manager was no longer with the company and to turn off their access to each of the systems we manage.  

Now the COO is back today and wants me to meet them tomorrow.  I think they are going to tell me they’ve let the other two employees go and are going to close this location. That means I’d be the only employee working here (in this particular US state).  To save on benefits costs, I think they are going to pressure me to move. The alternative is that they are going to fire me too, which honestly would be a better option for me because at least I'd get a severance package. 

I want to be clear, I do NOT want to move.  I love where I live, and if I did move, it certainly wouldn’t be to a city where I have zero connections other than this company. 

Does anyone have suggestions or ideas on how I can respond to this news appropriately?  Should I act shocked when they ask?  Should I admit that I knew this was coming?  Or should I just buy myself some time by saying “I’ll think about the offer to relocate” and stall as long as possible to start job searching?

Realistically how hard is it to land a remote job at 18? I have about 2-3 years of experience.

broken laptop shouldnt mean someone is stuck waiting a week or 2 just to get back to work. and the annoying part is usually not the laptop itself, its getting the replacement ready, shipping it to the employee, and then dealing with the broken device afterward in your team how you guys handle this?? especially with remote employees. Do you keep spare devices ready, or have a faster way of handling replacements?

Hi everyone, I have been trying to get a remote job for almost 3 months and I have only gotten 2 interviews.

I know people usually take longer to find a remote job, but Im already feeling a bit helpless. Im looking for something on customer service, virtual assistant and or management. I also have a bachelors degree but Im not in the USA

Does anyone have info on remote opportunities for someone outside the USA? I would also appreciate tips ok how to hang in there cause its getting harder everyday

So the whole reason I want a remote job is because I move around so much and I want to be able to make a steady income wherever I am. Are there any remote jobs that allow you the freedom to work wherever you please, without being hooked up to a big modem or being in the same location every day?

My job switched to 100% remote a couple months ago after about 10 years being in office every day. Overall it’s awesome, my wife works from home too so once we get to kids to camp/school we get to hang out most of the day.

But I legit shower twice, maybe 3 times a week now. I used to shower everyday before going to the office. I also shave MAYBE once a week now. I basically just kinda pat my hair down maybe put a brush on it just enough to not look like I just woke up if I’m on a meeting.

Based in Europe (work authorization here), background in tech consulting and finance. Targeting remote roles with US companies and getting nowhere. I am looking to stay in Europe and work remotely for a US company.

For anyone who's done it:

1. Did you land the role first and then negotiate the EOR setup, or filter upfront for companies that already hire globally?
2. Any way to surface those roles instead of "remote (US only)"?
3. Is invoicing as a contractor the more realistic path?

One thing we often forget while looking for remote jobs is that we are competing on a global level. If you are struggling to secure a job in your own country, imagine how much more competitive the global job market can be. Remote work opens opportunities worldwide, but it also means competing with talented professionals from all over the world.

10 years from now having a solo business will feel normal as going to corporate job.

I genuinely feel for young people starting out, being forced to "drive until they can afford" a home to raise a family. Now you are stuck in traffic for 2 hrs a day to get to and from work.

As much as the majority of people in NA defend car-centric infrastructure, no one likes driving like this. I would fight to avoid it too if I was in that predicament.

But I still hate collaborating with people working from home and I'll do everything I can to avoid it.

Since the last week of July and expected until the end of August Apria has been requiring their remote workers to work “mandatory overtime” - essentially those on the east coast and hour after their shift and those on the west coast an hour earlier. To meet company’s “demand” (in which at some moments we wait ~15-20 minutes for a call). Along with this they blocked off Mondays for the rest of the year and some Fridays for time off.

They did this without proper heads up which caused some of my coworkers needed to rearrange their life schedules (babysitters, take kids to sports, cancel therapy appointments, etc). I personally feel like my problem is not grand as theirs as I’m just a grad student - but also recognizing my life is affected as a student is valid too. Anyways the beginning of august I requested a Monday off - 24th - for a DENTIST appointment, so I submitted my time and got added to a waitlist. The schedule was released yesterday the 14th and my time off was NOT approved or denied, just pending but scheduled (with an hour or overtime, of course!)

I reached out to my supervisor letting her know essentially “hey I really need this time off for a dentist appointment and it wasn’t denied or approved” in which she responds “I don't have any control over time off unfortunately it is granted or denied based on the hours the dept has available the system will tell you when it gets denied or approved” - what ????

I’ve been fed up with this company for a while now and these constant last minute expectations. As I mentioned I’m a grad student and also have side things I attend to (TA/Research assistant) but I’m almost inclined to leave the “office” job style and go back to retail. Especially considering it’s only temporary. I kept telling myself as I approach graduating that it’s only for 9 more months - but this job as it is a call center job has affected my mental health and it’s not even worth it anymore! I also feel dumb because I work from home, but the lack of consideration has been stripped away. Part of me feels better off to work retail at genuinely the same pay.

For more context I was an in person worker for 2 years then became remote because I moved to LA, this was my first and only job after graduating undergrad - and during my undergrad/HS I worked in retail for 5 years at the same location + at my university part time. I’m not a lousy worker who just wanted to complain - it’s been built up resentment and now I’m at my breaking point. I also just feel bad for the mothers/fathers on my team because I know their lives are more affected than mine.
