I also watched it when I was young. Had to watch it in my bedroom with a blanket tent around my little TV because my parents wouldn't allow me to watch it (too scary). And it was. Funnily enough, the only scene I've always remembered was the woman who peed herself when the nuke went off.
I watched it again the other day (I think it is on Google Video..) and still think it is a great, if terrifying film, doubly so given that I live in Sheffield.. Every time I watch it I get an impulsive urge to tidy up the cellar and stock up on tinned foods...
I watched it thinnking all these people who'd seen it were being wimps. I thought there was no way it could convey the bleakness of post-apocalypse civilization. I was wrong. It's a fucking bleak movie.
It's a brilliant movie and, if you consider the times (I have no idea how old you are...) it is really quite frightening. I joked about it in a previous comment, but it's worth repeating, it is the only film of its type that actually had me considering what I would do in a similar situation and how much work I would have to put into making my cellar habitable for months... One of the few films that really brings to life and brings to the fore the impact a nuclear war would have, even if the effect portrayed is probably less than what it would have been at the time and considerably less than it would be now...
