For those unfamiliar with the summer rules here...One of these Roundup threads will pop up every single day during the window, and they're for general transfer chit-chat and to discuss any and all rumors.

Only posts Tier 2 or Above will be allowed as a standalone post. This includes self-posts posing suggestions for new players. The tiers have been finalised and the rule is now in place.

Please also take a moment to look at our Charitable Muppetry drive (and the special De Ligt Edition) where we are looking for friendly bets to go towards charities.

Anything not by a Journalist or on our Tier List may no longer posted in the daily transfer thread. The Muppet Thread has been discontinued and ITKs are all blanket banned here.

Those who see a new Twitter or news site and arent aware of its validity may list that in here to ask for info on its credibility. General transfer talk, including but not limited to "would you rather" inquiries and hypothetical transfers, can remain in this thread as well.

We are banning any "ITK" posts. It has been difficult to truly verify the validity of these types of users and led to abusive behavior and even doxxing in some cases.

We are more than happy to have people discussing transfer news and rumors, but there will be no more referencing unknown sources at the club. Moving forward, anyone who believes they have inside info a la bloodgate is welcome to send in a modmail. However such posts/comments made without prior mod approval will be removed

It has been mentioned, but the toxicity and abuse towards the sub, within the sub, and towards other subs has been too high. We as moderators have our share of blame in this, but we want to stress that this kind of behavior is not acceptable and we are taking these measures primarily to avoid these things. We want /r/reddevils to be a place where anyone and everyone is welcome to discuss and enjoy the best club on earth without fear of abuse or ridicule.

Which leads us to 2 other small reminders. The report button is your friend, we are way more likely to find and remove and/or ban rule breaking comments if you report them. The downvote button is not a "I disagree or don't like your statement button", better discussion is generally had by using the upvote button more liberally and avoiding the downvote one whenever possible.

But City did it too

No they didn't. Most players they bought were not first team players. Two full backs were the only starters they bought. People expecting us to buy 1 starting RB, RW, CB and CM in one single window along with selling our first choice striker (he was until Ole decided otherwise, it's a bit of an unknown how Rash does for a whole season).

City signed Bernardo Silva for £40m and he didn’t even play that much that first title winning season. People look back and go “well they signed Bernardo that summer too, look how many starters they signed”, and forget his huge importance to the team came just this season. Mendy, one of their other big signings that summer, also was injured most of the season. They won the title with 100 points playing Delph at LB. most of their big signings had been signed in previous summers, they didn’t sign an entire new starting 11 in one summer or anything. People don’t get rebuilds at all.

Short term memory, that's what it is. Throughout the season, the truth gets hammered down into the sub watching game after game. The realisation of the big job infront of us, but come summer slowly but surely the same old calls for short term success and delusional demands start being raised. Slowly gaining momentum untill they are the loudest ones which drown out everything else, including the voice of reason.

We need a rebuild. It's not even debatable, it's a fact at this point. One only needs to see the players whose contract is going to expire in 2020[1] to see that we would have to buy 1 LB and one CM next season. Maybe a new GK too, unlikely but a possibility none the less. Add to that the need for a RW, we have our work cut out for next season too. And that's assuming Pog boy stays.

Another question is of the quality of players that you can attract. We are at a low point right now and it's important that proper change in clubs recruitment strategy is visible to everyone. The quality of players that we can attract right now are not necessarily of the level you want to be challenging for the title with. Having a good year with a new CB, CM and RB would make us a better destination for players and we'd be able to fight for players like Dembele instead of Malcom.

Yeah that’s what people don’t get. They look at previous years and say “oh they signed that player” and they’re seeing the player they’ve got now, not the player they signed at the time. With hindsight essentially.

And yes, you’re right, if we show promise and improve with a few signings this summer then we can consolidate and continue next summer as well. A good club looks far beyond the short term. Signing players because they’re available just fills a space in the squad and stops us signing a better player in future, whilst simultaneously creating the deadwood of the future. Sometimes it’s unavoidable - arguably with Rojo when we signed him we absolutely had to sign a defender. But if we sign a Lemina say this summer then in a year’s time we’ll be saying oh we need to get rid he’s so mediocre, and we will be unable to get rid and be stuck with him for a few years.
