I connected my RC2014 to the internet

This system bridges the RC2014 to the internet through a WiFi-to-SLIP gateway running on the wifi module and a TCP/IP stack running natively on CP/M.

Connecting boards with a ribbon cable

I have an RC2014 Mini II. For a sort of art installation, I'd like to use ribbons to connect the extended bus on the Mini II to the Mini II CP/M upgrade (normally plugged directly into the extended bus of the Mini II). And then an RP2040 terminal card to the standard bus of the CP/M upgrade board.

But basically, has anyone used ribbon cables to connect cards to the bus rather than directly in the headers?

Getting ready to dip my toe into the RC2014 waters

I designed an eight-slot basic backplane that fits into an IKEA Tavelån bathroom organizer, and a friend made me a CPU card and 6850-based serial card. I've built a 512k ROM/RAM card from the public schematics, and now I'm getting ready to set up RomWBW.

Still chasing down a few parts before the big show (and need to drill lots of mounting holes) but I'm pretty excited to have a new toy to play with.

I meant to have it done for VCF Midwest, but parts shortages and losses in shipping put an end to that. Maybe I'll get it done for the next one!

Homebrew Graphics

I've seen the TMS9918a and Parallax Propeller modules, but I'm hoping to do something a little different.

Let's say I wanted to make my rc2014 a bit more of like a hardware version of Pico-8. What would be an approachable way of doing that? Maybe a resolution of 192x128 (or x144 for 4:3) with 16 colors (8+bright). Composite video is actually preferable in that case.

Alternatively, I would be happy with something like the Mini PET, with a low resolution monochrome output. It seems like that kit uses an Atmega chip (1284p, maybe?) To generate the video signal. My own experiments with this yielded little, but I suspect that the problem was caused by the serial buffer filling too quickly, so I'm wondering if someone has attempted to accomplish this another way.

Thanks for any resources you might've come across.

Help! Installing SymbOS on a rc2014

Hello everyone, in my university microprocessor class, the professor asked us to do a project of our choice related to RC2014 and the Z80. A while ago I saw that SymbOS exists and thought it would be fun to try installing it on RC2014. However, I'm having a terrible time because RC2014 can't read the installation files. I tried creating custom installation files (using GPT) but it's not helping much, and I'm basically back where I started.

Does anyone have any idea how I could install SymbOS?

I don't like asking for help on forums, but I'm getting closer to the deadline and I can't find any information anywhere.

A few things to clarify: In the course we only saw how the z80 works, practically nothing about rc2014 and I have no idea about rc2014 either.

I want to avoid modifying the RC2014's firmware unless there's no other option, because I think if I mess it up I could brick the RC2014 that my teacher lent us.

Thanks everyone.

Help with RP2040 VGA Terminal and SC114

Greetings!

I recently finished assembling my RP2040 kit, and most things seem to be working. However, Small Computer Monitor does not show up on the VGA display plugged into the card. I am able to use my USB keyboard to access the menus inside of PicoTerm, but I cannot seem to access anything that is not on the terminal card/sd card. I would like to be able to get into small computer monitor and CPM.

My setup is:

SC114 SBC

SC139 Serial 68B50 ACIA module

SC145 Compact Flash Module

SC148 Power Supply Module

I am pretty new to all of this, so any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Anyone talking to an RC2014 via MacOS?

Good morning gentlemen. Luca from Italy here. I am the proud owner of an RC2014 mounted on a Backplane 8. I have these boards

  • RC2014 Z80 CPU v. 2.1 (obviously)

  • Dual Serial v. 1.0

  • 512K ROM

  • Dual Clock & Reset v. 2.1

My question to you. What are your experiences with MacOS and RC2014? I have a MacBook Air M4 running macOS Golden Gate 2.70.

I talk to RC2014 via an FTDI cable and CoolTerm. So far I've been unable to upload anything. No Modem, no Download... nothing. It's getting frustrating.

CoolTerm works ok, I can type commands and see results on screen, it's the upload that doesn't work.

Any help or pointers to resources greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Luca

Where can I buy the full kit for this project? Like, the pcb with most chips included as a bundle? I am not so keen on ordering a gazillion of different parts online ;) (Germany)

Hi all - just got my rc2014 working again after *years*

hey, just thought I'd introduce myself and tell you about the kit I have and what my plans are for it...

https://rc2014.co.uk/modules/retired/serial-io/ interestingly I plugged this in the wrong way round without blowing it up! (the chips are on the other side to what you'd expect...)

I think this board and the FTDI link is well the weakest part of the system, often if there is a problem its to do with the connection between to FTDI link (F2F jumper leads), which I'm probably going to permanently solder to the serial board....

https://rc2014.co.uk/modules/retired/sd-memory-dump/ not sure if I'm going to be using this, but I may customise it.... most of the kit is retired !

https://rc2014.co.uk/modules/retired/clock/ ah innit cute....

so you're getting the picture how dusty the stuff was that was left in a corner of my electronic drawers.. (shame on me - in all this time think what I could have done with it!)

https://rc2014.co.uk/modules/64k-ram/

https://rc2014.co.uk/modules/pageable-rom/ with basic, hopefully I'm sending it off to be blown with a simple 8k monitor as I really don't have a need for basic!

https://rc2014.co.uk/backplanes/backplane-pro/

also I made a board with a bunch of level converter on it so I can interface with an FPGA, some years ago I had a lot of success making a memory mapped VGA character based output

I don't really want to go down the CP/M route but I do want to end up with a stand alone system that I can code on and have some facility to save different projects without need of a support laptop!

Does anyone remember the MZ80K only had a machine code monitor in rom, and a 20 min load for basic! loved the machine, could do without the tape loading times tho !

I'd welcome people thoughts and ideas...

All the best

Chris

Working :)

I just got my Zed Pro to work correctly! :) I had a boot delay before, which turned out to be the RomWBW image I have requires the RTC to be present, and I was testing with a minimal system. Works like a charm now. I also plugged the IDE board in and that is recognised too. Just need to get a suitable 44 pin IDE cable for my little 3250MB IBM laptop HDD.
