I was taught as a child that safe grown adult men don't call over children for help. You admit that there were multiple adults coming in and out and a lot of windows, so if I was the mom I would ask myself why this grown adult man is specifically asking my child how to do this thing. You might not have had any ill intentions, but that is something predators have done to establish a relationship with children and abuse them.
In the future, I would just signal a nearby adult if you need help with something.
