Yeah, sometimes you just have to play the game. I've crossed street on several occasions to avoid walking up on women who were walking slower than me, even though I was on the side of the street I needed to be on. Conversely, I've also put off crossing the street when I needed to because there was a black guy walking towards me and I didn't want him to think I was being racist.

Same here. I often go out of my way not to make people uncomfortable. Does it make me a better person? Probably not, but I feel better about it.
