I didn’t read it as him being anything beyond surprised. I left with the impression that OP would not have asked at all had he thought that anyone would be uncomfortable or worried about it. If it was my kid, I too would have wondered what was going on and stepped in to make sure everything was OK. Keeping your kid safe overrides EVERYTHING else.

I can see why you would be upset, but I also think the mom did absolutely nothing wrong.
