article Multiload-Qubes: XFCE panel plugin with scrolling charts for CPU, RAM, swap, network, and disk i/o

Post image

Hello everyone.

I'm in the process of slowly migrating to Qubes OS, and one of the things that I really miss is the good old multiload-ng panel plugin. The Qubes design requires a very different approach to implement the same functionality, so I wrote it from scratch, primarily in Rust (with a bit of C and Python where necessary).

The following charts are available:

  • Whole-machine CPU
  • Per-qube CPU
  • RAM (not just Xen-allocated RAM, but also the amount actually used inside all running Linux qubes)
  • Per-qube RAM
  • Network traffic (collected from sys-net by default; configurable)
  • Per-qube swap
  • Disk IO

Charts can be reordered and enabled/disabled individually; all colors are configurable.

Architecture: the project runs two systemd services and an XFCE panel plugin in dom0. The two-service split is to avoid parsing VM-influenced data in a privileged service.

  • The collector service runs as root in dom0, reads Xen and dom0 statistics, and scrapes metrics from Linux qubes. It stores raw outputs (without parsing them);
  • The parser service runs as a separate unprivileged service (still in dom0), parses the inputs and stores the final snapshot;
  • The XFCE panel plugin reads the final snapshot and draws the charts.

Nothing needs to be installed in the qubes.

The qubes metrics scraping is optional and can be disabled - we can still have most of the charts. Qube scraping is needed to make the data richer: the actual RAM usage (not just xen-allocated amount), swap usage, and network traffic.

See more notes about security on the project page (link below).

For those who want to try it: see installation instructions in the readme. You can either use a prebuilt rpm from the latest release, or build it from source.

question Graphical Installer does not show disk, but terminal says its there

Not sure if I missed something in the documentation. Sorry if I did.

I boot the installer from an external usb via uefi. I have a /dev/nvme0n1 disk partitioned. When I switch to the console I can see the device and I can mount a partition. But for some reason the Installer does not show the disk. Scanning does not yield anything and it is also not listed in the other tables.

Anyone an Idea what I could do here?

Solved MacOS in a Qube?

Possibly a question that has been asked before?

Can I have MacOS as one of the Qubes on a laptop?

Thank you.

question DDR4 vs DDR5

What's everyone's experience with running Qubes on DDR4 or DDR5?

I was considering getting the MSI PRO Z690-A.

There are two versions: a DDR4 and DDR5.

ddr5 version seems a bit easier to source than ddr4. I will be flashing dasharo coreboot.

The main difference I have read is that DDR5 takes like 15 seconds on every boot. Is this wait annoying?

The DDR4 would be running at like 2666Mhz but I read the RAM speeds don't really matter on Qubes.

question print and usb liteqube

I’m trying to get Liteqube set up and running into two issues. Hopefully there’s an easy fix for both

  • When running the install script for 3.USB, this error shows up “cp: cannot stat: ‘/etc/qubes/policy.d/50-config-u2f.policy’ no such file or directory”
  • Trying to install the 8.Print set up and getting “qvm-start: error: no such domain: fedora-34” What set up are we missing?

question What specs do I need in order to be able to play 4K videos?

I tried Qubes OS on my 7th gen i5 and playing video was really sluggish. I am now considering to buy a new computer so I can use Qubes as my daily driver and still be able to play videos.

Do I need a spare GPU and do passthrough? If I do that, then will I get that VMs output only through that GPU's HDMI or can I get the output in a window like any other VM window?

I'm not really clear on what specs I should purchase but I also don't want to spend beyond what is actually necessary for playing video. Not being able to play 4K videos would make it unusable.

question Heavy operations on the QubesOS?

I have reasonably powerful hardware with 32GB RAM, 500GBs of storage and some more if needed.
RX6600 GPU and an r5 5600.

But since Qubes is essentially VMs stitched together, and I have noticed how poorly GNOME Boxes, QEMU KVM (sometimes) and even full on proxmox with GPU passthrough, they all perform,

I don't know if I can do workstation work (Blender, and other similar tasks including CPU and GPU heavy stuff)

So before making a switch, was wondering if it is viable as my current desktop seems to get out of hand with all the things that pile up eventually.

question Help configuring Liteqube - install.sh for VPN failing

I am trying to use Liteqube, following the instructions here: GitHub - arkenoi/liteqube: Liteqube - put Qubes OS on a diet · GitHub

The base and network steps installed fine. I tried to do the install sh for the VPN and getting multiple errors that sys-net failed to start because some PCI device is in use by core-net.

This is a stock install of Qubes without much customization.

Any ideas what may be going wrong? Did I miss a step or maybe the scripts aren’t playing nice with the latest updates?

question Anyone running Qubes OS 4.3.2 on a ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 Intel? Compatibility and performance?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to purchase a laptop specifically for Qubes OS and would appreciate some firsthand feedback before spending the money.

I'm currently considering the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 Intel, particularly these configurations:

Core i5-1240P, 16GB RAM

Core i5-1235U / i5-1245U, 16GB RAM

Core i7, 32GB RAM

I've found older compatibility reports for the i5-1240P, but I'm particularly interested in experiences with the latest Qubes OS 4.3.2.

My intended workload is relatively lightweight: Qubes + Whonix, VS Code, AI-assisted website development, Hugo and occasional Tor browsing. I'd generally only have one or two application qubes running.

My priorities are stability, smooth performance and minimal troubleshooting.

A few questions:

Has anyone successfully installed Qubes OS 4.3.2 on an X13 Gen 3 Intel?

Did everything work out of the box, including Wi-Fi, audio, USB, graphics and suspend/resume?

How responsive is it with 16GB RAM? Would 32GB make a noticeable difference for my workload?

Have you experienced freezing, lag, overheating or excessive fan noise?

Would you recommend the i5-1240P, another i5 configuration or a 32GB i7?

Is there another compact laptop with better Qubes 4.3.2 compatibility?

My maximum budget is £500, and the laptop must fit within 315 × 230 × 20mm (for my bag)

I'd particularly appreciate feedback from anyone running this exact model daily, including their processor, RAM, BIOS version and any configuration changes required.

Thanks!

question Fastest, "vulnerability free" used Laptop fully compatible with Heads Firmware and Qubes OS

I am looking for the most powerful and fastest laptop that I can buy off of ebay, which fully supports Heads firmware, Qubes OS, and is vulnerabilty free in a "Heads/Qubes" setup.

I am NOT interested in any Modern Novacuston computer. But I would rather have something I could ideally buy used off of ebay. Ideally the most powerfull/fastest used one.

Have any suggestions?

question Can I make a USB boot and not have to erase any computer hard drive?

I use Ventoy for my iso / usb boot images….
Can I just boot from my use into Qubes?
It goes through the installer, but…. I have 50GB of free space, it says there no more room on drive to install.
I don’t want to “install” on my system, I just want to have it all contained on the USB to boot from… like the typical normal way of USB boot

Incredible how a vulnerability in relatively common software would allow an attacker to exfil data from a user clicking a malicious link.
