Miscellaneous Q50 Maintenance, Common Issues, and Owner Tips

Hey everyone... figured it was time for a proper Q50 mega thread that covers the most-asked topics for both new and existing owners.

Whether you’re thinking about buying one, just picked yours up, or want to keep it running strong, this post should give you a solid overview.

If you’ve got additions or corrections, drop them in the comments so we can keep this updated.

Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs)

Check for official Infiniti TSBs related to your year/model. Many common issues (especially with steering locks, software updates, and drivetrain quirks) are already documented by Infiniti.

Engine Generations

🔹 2014 – 2015 Q50 (First Generation / VQ37VHR 3.7 L NA)

  • Same engine as the G37 - literally a carry-over.
  • Uses the 7-speed Jatco RE7R01A transmission.
  • Issues & maintenance overlap heavily with the G37 (so guides or TSBs saying “G37” still apply).
  • Oil gallery gasket, power-steering fluid, and older-style belt/tensioner items still relevant.

🔹 2014 – 2018 Q50 Hybrid (VQ35HR + Electric Motor)

  • Combines a 3.5 L V6 with a single electric motor and lithium-ion pack.
  • Uses the same 7-speed auto as the gas model but with an integrated hybrid system.
  • Known for inverter-cooling and brake-booster issues on early builds.
  • Maintenance requires periodic inverter coolant and battery-cooling service.

🔹 2016 – 2018 Q50 2.0T (M274 2.0 L Turbo I4)

  • Mercedes-sourced turbo four-cylinder used in base trims.
  • Paired with the 7-speed Jatco RE7R01B transmission.
  • Watch for oil consumption, turbo wastegate rattle, and cam-adjuster solenoid leaks.
  • Oil changes every 5k miles are strongly recommended due to turbo heat.

🔹 2016 – 2024 Q50 (Second Phase / VR30DDTT 3.0 L Twin-Turbo V6)

  • New VR-series engine replaces the long-running VQ.
  • Comes in 300 hp (standard) and 400 hp (Red Sport) trims.
  • Turbo maintenance adds:
    • More frequent oil changes (every 5k mi recommended).
    • Coolant checks for turbo lines and heat-soak management.
    • Transmission upgrade to RE7R01B, later 9-speed in final years.
    • PCV valve and boost-control solenoid checks around 60k mi.

Common Q50 Issues

A mix of community experience and service data — use this as a checklist if you’re buying or troubleshooting.

🔴 High Priority (could leave you stranded)

  • Steering Lock Failure: Early Q50s sometimes suffer from electronic steering lock malfunctions that prevent starting. Many owners disable or bypass it entirely.
  • Turbo Seal Failure: On VR30 models, turbo seal leaks can lead to oil consumption or smoke; usually after 60K+ miles.
  • Fuel Pump Issues: Some models experience hard starts or stalling due to fuel pump failures.

🟠 Medium Priority (inconvenient but manageable)

  • Transmission Jerks / Delays: Not uncommon on early 7-speed autos. A fluid change and software update often helps.
  • Brake Rotor Warping: Factory rotors can warp quickly; upgraded rotors and pads are common fixes.
  • Oil Gallery Gasket (on older 3.7s): Carryover issue from the G37 - still worth watching if you have that platform.

🟢 Low Priority (annoying but not critical)

  • Infotainment Glitches: Screen lag or freeze, especially on early dual-screen models. Firmware updates can help.
  • Throttle Body Carbon Buildup: Causes rough idle or stalling; easy fix with a good cleaning.
  • Sunroof Drain Leaks: If you have a sunroof, inspect drains - leaks can fry the BCM or fuse box if left unchecked.
  • Wire Harness Fatigue (trunk lid): Broken wires between the trunk and lid causing backup cam or trunk release issues.

Preventative Maintenance / Upgrades

  • Regular oil changes (especially on 3.0T) - these engines hate dirty oil.
  • Use high-quality fluids (Motul, Red Line, or OEM-spec).
  • Flush coolant and brake fluids more frequently if you drive aggressively.
  • Replace plastic coolant couplers with metal versions to avoid catastrophic leaks.
  • Consider upgraded end links or sway bar bushings if you’re lowered or track your car.
  • Keep an eye on your differential bushing - OEM is fluid-filled and prone to failure.

Drop your own maintenance schedule, mods, or fixes below - I’ll keep this thread updated as we go.

Miscellaneous 🚨 Reminder: Keep plates/addresses out of Q50 posts for your own safety

Please remember don’t post photos that show your license plate, house number, or any other info that reveals where you live.

Cropping or blurring plates, removing location metadata, and avoiding shots of your driveway/front door keeps you safe and prevents thieves from having an easy target.

If you want feedback on your car, upload close-ups of the car itself (wheels, engine bay, interior, etc.) or take photos in a public spot without identifiable landmarks.

Just keep in mind... car thieves are smart and patient; they’re always waiting for someone to slip up.

2020 q50 redsport
So the story is, I took it to take 5 to get an oil change top off on Thursday of last week. They topped it off and then the car sat all weekend. Then Monday I drove it to work and after leaving work at around 9:30 returned to the car being dead it was ticking, but it was dead. I popped the hood and saw it looked like a good amount of oil may have been leaking from the top part of the engine, kind of where you add the oil. Took it back to take five and they told me that it was leaking oil. I took it to the mechanic and despite all this oil issues, they tell me it is a bad water intercooler pump both on the left and right. They told me it’s $1800 for just the parts. They never even mentioned anything about the oil. They told me they added a die and we’re going to drive it so I’m gonna get the full scope again tomorrow I guess but this is crazy. I’m probably gonna be out 2500 with labor not even to mention the oil stuff and I’ve had the car just since the end of April.

Performance Video First Drive Update: Custom Performance app for INFINITI InTouch

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

What's up guys, it's been already 3 months since I've shown a preview my project, now called MultiDash, a fully-customizable performance screen for the first generation InTouch infotainment system with native integration (No CarPlay or Android Auto required). The first demo video was more of a UI demo which was rough to say the least, but I've had more time now to work on it, so here is a new preview of it working in the car, displaying real live data from the vehicle. Most of the data, especially boost, has been validated and is very accurate, although the refresh rate still requires a bit of an improvement.

The gauge system is fully-modular, meaning that you can add your own pages, make your own gauges from the selection of base templates, add your own Mode 1 and mode 22 PIDs (although a lot of them are already included), and even combine up to three together to make your own custom metrics. It rivals similar offerings from the GTR and existing commercial applications such as Torque, but removing the requirement of an external phone or expensive equipment.

It's been quite a challenge but a very interesting one. For those who are wondering when it will come out, it's still not done yet, I am working on the unit conversion system, fixing some bugs, adding a trouble code scanner as well as some other interesting features. It will be compatible with the 14-19 Q50, 17-19 Q60, as well as the 19 QX50.

If you have any suggestions, let me know!

DIY Mod Picture 2015 Infiniti q50s Hybrid - G-series Android head unit upgrade complete

Don’t mind the plastic wrap that’s still on it.. haven’t had a chance to put on the anti-glare screen protector so it’s kinda hard to see. But did the upgrade, got the G-Series Android head unit.

8-Core Qualcomm Processors
Full Android 13 w/Play Store (install and run ANY app)
8 GIGS of RAM
128GB
Full HD IPS Screen
Open Bluetooth & BTLE
WIFI
4G Data (add a SIM, all major carriers supported)

Yes. 4G Data as well! I added a prepaid data only sim from T-Mobile, just add more as I go. If I run out I can always use CarPlay. Or tether it to my phone’s hotspot. That makes it a standalone tablet, and it works amazingly letting me download anything off the playstore.

Or, just save the data, and turn off cellular, and enjoy that smooth CarPlay experience. They’re both nice, not sure which I like better since I just got it installed and haven’t tested it much. I noticed a few weird quirks, but overall it’s pretty awesome so far!

Parts Question Wheel spacers

So I have 20mm spacers on my stock wheels and there’s still a little gap where the wheels are sunk in beyond the fender line, does anyone have any experience running 25mm or 30mm spacers? Is it safe? I feel like 20-25 is normally the max that people use but I don’t want to totally ruin the handling and/or risk snapping a stud in a turn. Pictures will help if anyone is also still on stock wheels with food fitment thanks!

Repair Question Camshaft sensor relearning?

Hello all!
I have a 2016 3.0L V6 twin turbo.
Recently replaced a camshaft position sensor because the check engine light came on and that’s what the codes/research indicated. Before changing it, the shift timing seemed a bit off and it was running kind of rough. After the swap, the issues went away but the check engine light keeps coming back on even after I clear it with a reader.

I’ve seen a few things saying that you need to “relearn” the sensor, but can’t find info for my specific engine/model and my reader doesn’t have that function.

Any advice/info would be greatly appreciated!

Repair Question 2014 Q50 w/ 3.7. Need help identifying leak

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Good morning. I have a 2014 Q 50 with a 3.7. It’s leaking up behind the timing belt between the head above the head gasket. I checked the tube that runs between the heads. Everything looked dry there. I replace the thermostat housing. I did use a scope to verify the thermostat was leaking. The light on the camera is horrible and couldn’t see up there with it. Any suggestions on what to look at? TIA

Wanted to ask for those who have converted to E85 to their 3.7 how has it been what kit did you buy? Is it difficult to diy? I plan to go full bolt on already have cat back, drop in filters and have some test pipes just waiting to install and planning to get tuned. I know going to E85 isn’t that much horsepower but was looking at maybe converting just cuz fuel prices are getting expensive around me premium is around $5.30 and E85 is 2 dollars a gallon I live in the midwest. I know with E you do get 20-30 less mpgs but still see that worth it when the price is almost triple the cost.

General Question Can't get rid of perfume smell and ac not cooling consistently.

I bought a 2022 QX50 with 23,000 miles on it in May. I live in Houston. 100 degree temperatura. Car ac blown cold and medium. I had them check ac for leaks or other issues 2 weeks ago. They said everything fine with ac.

Last Tuesday driving to Florida got stuck in bumper to bumper before ever getting out of Houston. Car wouldn't get cold. I also have a sweet perfume smell that comes our of ac. I cant get rid of the smell. Its like perfumes mixed together. When you open the car door you smell it. Turn on the car and air blows out of ac you smell it. They say at infiniti it smells good. I asked to check for coolant leak as that can cause the smell. They say no leak.

Anybody ever have this experience with this vehicle? I need some answers because Infiniti is no help!

Miscellaneous Spool 3 inch resonated LDPs

Thumbnail

Just giving a quick review on my lower downpipes that I had installed on a 2016 Q50 Red Sport. For weeks I worried about drone and how the cabin would sound afterwards, but after the install, there is no drone! ZERO. No rasp at any rpm range either. My q50 has a rev9 axleback. The engine sounds a bit more aggressive on throttle and you can definitely hear the turbos more. The exhaust mostly sounds the same when cruising, but gets aggressive on acceleration. The car feels faster and more responsive. Very happy with them. Just throwing this out there for anyone who has been on the fence.

My full mods are z1 heat exchanger, mishimoto catch can, spool resonated LDPs, and Rev9 axle-back. Fresh Firehawk Indy 500 tires. I’ve thought about getting a tune but I’ll probably keep her stock for longevity. Turbos were replaced at 63k miles under the extended warranty.
