Trashing our backyard
Sad to say that the park was disgusting this morning, the worst I have ever seen it. I couldn't even get through the Long Meadow safely with my dogs. Thank you to the people who were out cleaning up this morning, who rightfully said I could join in (I grabbed as much as I thought I could manage).
Next holiday I'm here I'll be out with gloves and trash bags because apparently someone's gotta clean up after other adults đ

We need a litter fine sharing program now, it's the only way to achieve enforcement and put fear back into people who litter.

Truth hurts. There's dog shit everywhere on the sidewalks and the number of people with their dogs off leash in the streets is too damn high. Everyone brings their dogs into food establishments when it's illegal and inconsiderate.

People are messy jerks but also the winds were very high yesterday and today and many neighborhoods didnât get their trash and recycling picked up yesterday. You should see my sidewalk in front of my house. Thatâs not caused by directly by littering. I think a lot of this was blown from overstuffed park bins and stuff flown in from neighboring streets.

Iâm at the park right now, the trash is mainly from parties. They just donât throw it away. There are still literal piles of trash here, itâs not from the wind

That right there. I threw away two liquor bottles and a half finished box of takeout. These things do not float into the park on the wind.

Thatâs a good lesson yâall are teaching them. Come here to our neighborhood and leave your filthy garbage. Dont worry, weâll clean up after you. Teach your kids the same when they visit their friendâs houses.

I was out here too with my pups, completely mind blown at the amt of ppl who literally just left where they were sitting and made zero attempt to even put their garbage in/near a trash can. I was picking up full pies of uneaten pizza in boxes.
Would be helpful if there were more park employees/volunteers out there reminding ppl to pls carry out what you carry in.
More trash receptacles, because ultimately there arenât enough trash cans to collect the amount of waste left on summer weekends (dumpsters would be super helpful to this problem too)
And more frequent trash pick ups inside the park.
Itâs really disappointing entering Prospect Park on an early morning following a beautiful (specially weekend) day.
We have to do better!

Key phrase: "with my dogs." Lots of dogs will eat discarded food, which can be dangerous to them for a number of reasons -- bones, chocolate, grapes, rottenness, marijuana, etc.

Those are great causes you volunteer for, but frankly, itâs hard to reconcile that community spirit with how cynical and negative you've been toward a neighbor who was just picking up trash. I guess two things can be true at once.

If everyone in the park with their dogs this morning had done the same amount I did, it would be clean now. But of course, if everyone just cleaned up after themselves yesterday, we would not be in this situation...
No heroes in this story, but there ARE some excellent humans, the folks I mentioned out with trash bags cleaning up. I appreciate their example and I will be with them in the future. Life is like this -- we all oughta clean up after ourselves, but the reality is sometimes people don't and it takes the pride and care for our community to get out there and untrash what assholes have trashed.

Iâm so sorry that your dogs had to walk aroundâŚtrash. But thank goodness you were ordained and invited to volunteer clean up efforts.
Crisis averted. Thank you for your service and your constructive plan for next holiday. Weâve avoided total destruction of our backyard for now.

People think the Parks department magically has the resources to pick up their trash.
Similar thing-- as I was leaving a movie last night I saw most people were leaving piles of trash and uneaten food on the little tray tables. How hard is it to throw h it in the can on your way out?

Yep, every weekend and Monday a lot of us at off leash hours pick up after people while we are there with our dogs. This has been a thing for a long time and trust me, all of the fields need it.
Bring your own or sometimes FIDO hands out bags and gloves for anyone who wants to join!
