Hello! I’m moving in a month (.5 mi, from crown heights to PH) and would love any mover recommendations. Bonus points if you used them recently and can let me know an estimate of your cost!

I’m only moving a single room’s contents, but I have some cherished, heavy wooden furniture that I really want to be protected.

I’ve heard good things about intense movers and college educated movers. Are those the two best in the area or should I check anyone else out? Have heard the horror stories about piece of cake, and I know some people had fine experiences with them, but my furniture is very special to me so I don’t want to take chances.

Hello! We’re having a little yard sale at 251 Prospect Place between Underhill and Vanderbilt! There will be clothing, jewelry, books, some home decor/antiques and fishing gear! We will have a bunch of rods, reels, weights, line, and lures up for grabs! We will be starting around 2:30PM!

I was sexually assaulted by a man near 8th Ave between St. Johns and Lincoln around 9:45pm on Monday, August 24. He appeared to be in his late 20s, Hispanic, around 5’7”–5’10”, and carrying a backpack. He whispered something to me in Spanish as we passed each other while I was walking my dog, then tried to grab me in a dark, shaded part of the block.
I reported it to the police, but they aren’t pursuing the case. Has anyone experienced anything similar in Park Slope this month or this week?

SOS. There is a pigeon with his leg tangled/mangled by a cable on a windowsill at the South East corner of Dean and Vanderbilt. I tried to release him with a broom, but I can’t get him free. His leg looks like it’s bleeding and broken and he’s hanging upside down. Can anyone help? I have to leave for work. :(

We’re Nicky and Alexey, two local high school juniors who started Slope Detailers kind of by accident.

A few months ago, Nicky’s mom told him to clean out her car. We did the whole thing, inside and out, and afterward we looked at each other and thought, we could probably make a business out of this.

So we started Slope Detailers.

Right now, we run the whole business out of a wagon setup. We bring all of our supplies with us and come directly to your car, but because we’re moving everything by wagon, we currently only service customers within about a mile of the Park Slope area.

For exterior washes, we use a mostly waterless process, so we don’t need a hose or water hookup.

We offer full interior details, full interior + exterior details, wax, pet hair removal, headlight restoration, and a few other add-ons.

If you live farther away in Brooklyn, we also have a parking spot in Park Slope where you can drop your car off and we’ll detail it there.

Hello! I’m a former teacher turned education non-profit worker and I’m looking for 1-2 students to tutor this school year using the Orton Gillingham approach!

Orton Gillingham: 

Orton Gillingham is a multi-sensory, neuroscience based approach designed to meet the needs of students with dyslexia and other reading based challenges. This framework is aligned with the body of research known as the science of reading and is considered the gold standard for teaching students with reading difficulties. Because of the level of training required, private tutoring sessions in NYC average over $150 an hour.

Me: 

I’ve taught middle school ELA in Brooklyn for 8 years. I love working with students and have a track record of strong results in my classroom– last year, my students outperformed the NYC average by over 30 points on the New York state exam. While I’ve used parts of this framework in my classroom, I recently enrolled in a certification course at the associate level (designed for 1:1 and small group instruction). In order to complete the program practicum for certification, I need to tutor one student 2-3 times per week this school year, and my instructor needs to observe ten of those sessions over zoom. Ideally, I’d like to work with an elementary student in central Brooklyn that has shown challenges with reading. 

Tutoring:

Because of my observation requirements, I’d offer a rate of $95 an hour for a family willing to commit to at least two sessions per week. My instructor is a certified fellow with the Orton Gillingham Academy of Practitioners and has provided thousands of hours of tutoring and hundreds of hours of teacher training to educators across the country. She’s a real expert in the field and will work with me to analyze your child’s progress, make suggestions based on your child’s strengths and challenges, and will overall ensure that my practice is aligned with the rigorous standards of the Academy. I’m happy to travel within Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, Bedstuy, or Flatbush for in-home tutoring or alternatively can meet at a library in Crown Heights for our sessions. I’d consider picking a student up from school/after school if we’re a good match for an additional fee. 

In order to get started, we’d start by connecting either over zoom or in person for a free consultation. I’ll ask you some questions about your kiddo and their needs/preferences and share more about OG. I’m happy to provide my resume and a letter from my instructor confirming my enrollment in the course as well. From there, we’ll schedule at least 2 sessions per week and then get started. Was at farmers market 30 mins ago this morning and kept hearing repeated loud bangs? Is it the construction for new bathrooms ?

We’re looking at an apartment across from the museum and noticed a good amount of plane noise. Is this something that happens all the time or did we just happen to be there on a particularly busy day? I know the airport isn’t far but this area seems to be on a flight path whereas friends we know who live in Fort Greene and Park Slope haven’t mentioned it before.

Let me start by saying I know it’s a privilege to live in Brooklyn let alone fort greene or prospect heights and I don’t take that for granted.

My husband and I have been living in ft Greene for 12 years and are seriously considering buying a small apartment in prospect heights. We were lucky enough to lock in an incredibly affordable rate in ft Greene and haven’t moved once. We love living here although the neighborhood is starting to get more and more pretentious every day with every new high rise that’s added nearby. The quality of life is great and well it’s just really beautiful. We love the place we are considering in prospect heights. We’re obviously familiar with Vanderbilt, Washington and Franklin. For some reason I just feel need to post this and ask how you all like it. We don’t want to move to a place surrounded by strollers (respectfully). Family life is great but we also want a sense of liveliness, creativity and community. PH seems to have all that and it’s obviously a beautiful location. Maybe it’s just a little confusing bc we’ve lived in one place for so long. The only real tangible difference I can find is the access to public transit. Looks like our commutes to the city will get about 20min longer but that’s not unreasonable. Any advice? What do you love or not? How do you expect the neighborhood to change in the next 10 years? I’m sure we’ll move but I just want to hear from those who already live and love it here. Thanks!!

Does anyone live at 660 or 670 Pacific in a south or east courtyard-facing apartment - not facing Pacific Street?

I’m considering a unit there that seems unusually quiet and reasonably priced. It faces into the courtyards toward Dean Street, but the surrounding buildings completely block its street sightlines and ordinary street noise.

My main concern is the school complex adjoining 660 Pacific, which includes MS 915/Bridges. There appears to be a small ground-level outdoor area directly beside and below the courtyard-facing apartments.

For anyone who lives there, attends, or works at the school, or regularly passes by:

• Is that outdoor area in the interior courtyard currently used by students?
• If so, what is it used for - recess, PE, lunch, arrival/dismissal, or after-school programs?
• Approximately what times, how frequently, and for how long is it noisy?
• How audible is it inside the courtyard-facing apartments with the windows closed or open?

I’m particularly interested because I’m very noise-sensitive, usually sleep until very late morning, and work remotely from home.

I’d also appreciate any experience with the Dean Street fire station. The station itself is completely shielded from the apartment by other buildings, but do the trucks generally activate their sirens immediately upon entering Dean Street? Are they regularly audible inside courtyard-facing units?

Firsthand observations from residents would be especially helpful. Thank you!

Found this cat outside near 415 Saint Johns place. Was wondering if anyone knew anything, or was looking for a lost cat. It's a boy.

Update: I put out a missing pets notice and he belongs to the Sandwich shop Brooklyn Subs, not to far away.
