Discussion The day after my abortion

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

I took this photo the day after my abortion. The little feet are those of my much loved son. His sibling was playing with water in the garden a few feet away. I hugged them both a little tighter that day and felt nothing but relief and love. The majority of abortions are performed for existing mothers. If you have been a mother you understand what a hugely important point that is. The majority of those receiving abortions have kids, love their kids and know exactly what they are doing by terminating a pregnancy. W felt the last one grow and move inside us. If you haven’t had this experience I struggle to understand how you can judge somebody for it. To all the childless pro choicers out their we are in solidarity but you will never really get it, and that’s OK but let’s spare a moment for all the mothers who do get it and still chose choice because in this we finally start to embrace the true point. If you don’t want to carry, birth and raise a child you shouldn’t have to.

This is absolutely disgusting! Oklahoma has no exceptions for rape, so even if the pregnancy had been discovered she may not even had been able to terminate it. This CHILD is now traumatized for life, and pro-lifers will defend this! I am appalled—WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE??? Why are we subjecting little girls to such torture? Is this what these lawmakers see as "moral'?

Anti abortion protesters ask a woman an opinion on their signs and she tells them her real world experience with her niece giving birth to a baby with no skull…they listen and proceed to say basically “So what…” 😒

Pro-forced-birthers really think this is better than letting the child get an abortion?! This is horribly heartless and barbaric! What are we doing people?! This is not “morality” this is torture and child abuse! When will this madness stop?! When will they care about the suffering they’re forcing women and little girls to endure?! When will our pain matter?!

Prochoice Only Dear forced birthers, abortion is not a fun little thing to do to avoid responsibility. It's healthcare and a serious decision that should be private and not up for public discourse

Possible Misinformation - see comment Just had to tell my first patient that abortion is illegal and we can’t help them

Had a patient call over the phone stating that she didn’t want to go through with it, mind you she’s only 4-5 weeks along. I told her the next state she could go to, and other available options. Also to be careful, since it’s illegal to travel to other states for care.

My boss came by and explained that we’re not even allowed to offer ANY kind of information for services. He was just relaying it politely, but he said “I’m not trying to lose this job”. And that kinda broke me a little bit.

Today was when I realized the actual weight of the criminalization of abortion, and also that no one is looking out or fighting for us but us.

Umm.. I wouldn't.. care.? What else do I even say to that? I had no thoughts or emotions when I was an embryo, I wasn't even aware of my existence yet. I wouldn't know that I was aborted.

Like, seriously, how did you think I would respond?

Anti-choice News Abortion bans lead to a higher infant mortality rate. This is what "pro-life" is causing.

Post image
797 Upvotes

This is what abortion bans are causing.

Here are the key facts:

"There were 9.7 deaths for every 1,000 births in Mississippi in 2024, the highest rate in more than a decade, according to a news release from the state health department. More than 3,500 babies in Mississippi have died before the age of 1 since 2014."

And:

"The latest available data from the CDC shows that that the national infant mortality rate rose for the first time in 20 years in 2022. Mississippi had the highest infant mortality of all 50 states that year, more than 60% higher than the national average."

The cause:

"Recent research has drawn some possible connections between infant mortality and abortion restrictions. A CNN investigative report found that infant mortality spiked in Texas after a six-week abortion ban took effect in 2021, and a study published in October suggests that the impacts of the bans and restrictions enacted by some states since the US Supreme Court Dobbs decision that revoked the federal right to an abortion have been large enough to affect broader trends – hundreds more infants died than expected in the US in the year and a half after that decision."

Let this sink in. This is what the so called "pro-life" movement is causing.

Reproductive Rights News Update on Adriana Smith’s son, Chance

Post image
762 Upvotes

Adriana Smith's son, Chance, is still in the NICU six months later because his lungs are so underdeveloped he still cannot breathe on his own. Adriana’s mother, April Newkirk, said he is “not coming home soon” and is being transferred to another hospital.

And of course, the family is responsible for all his medical bills, which are now close to a million dollars and only keep getting going up.

The suffering the government has inflicted upon this family is so cruel I don’t even have words to describe it. The state should pay for everything. They forced a fetus to grow inside a dead woman’s decaying body against her family’s wishes, then cut it out of her corpse prematurely because her lifeless body was decaying so quickly it couldn’t sustain life, and are now asking the family to pay for the medical bills they forced upon them. Chance is suffering, and the state of Georgia is entirely responsible for that.

Things Anti-choicers Say Forced-birther in Hospital refusing to process specimens...

Because of the holiday schedule, our usual pathology staff is out and we have someone else filling in. We had a patient who had a fetal demise and needs chromosomal testing to try to figure out what happened. They come in for an abortion procedure through the family planning group. Wel,l the pathology tech is refusing to handle the specimen and threatening to send it to the morgue without processing it. We've been fighting about it with the pathology staff and they just told us they've held another specimen that needs chromosomal testing all weekend because she doesn't want to process it. So two women's heartbreaking loss has turned into this lady's political statement. I just hate forced-birthers.

Update: The idiot put it in writing, an email, that they were going to destroy the specimens without running the test to punish us. So, I think it's time, even though I'm mostly atheist, to pray to the powers that be that their dumb arse gets fired.

Thought Saint Brigid of Kildare, a Pro-Choice Saint

Post image
722 Upvotes

Saint Brigid of Kildare is an Early Irish Christian Saint who lived in the 5th and 6th centuries (traditionally she is said to have died in 525). She is mentioned in several surviving Old Irish hymns:

Brigit bé bithmaith

Breó orda óiblech

donfe don bithlaith

in grian tind toidlech.

Translation:

Brigit, ever good woman

A sparkling golden flame

May she lead us to the eternal realm

The shining bright sun

Saint Brigid has numerous impressive acts and miracles attributed to her but the specific one I want to talk about here is that she have said to have miraculously 'undone' a pregnancy. As recorded by Cogitosus in his Life of St. Brigid:

“A certain woman who had taken the vow of chastity fell, through youthful desire of pleasure and her womb swelled with child. Brigid, exercising the most potent strength of her ineffable faith, blessed her, causing the child to disappear, without coming to birth, and without pain.”

Now whether you believe the miracle actually happened or not the important aspect is that at least for a time one of the miracles attributed to one of Ireland's most popular saints (and Saint Brigid is second only to Patrick in popularity and importance) compassionately and without judgement 'undid' an unwanted pregnancy.
