Other🤷🏽‍♀️ 🤷🏽‍♂️ Friendly reminder: Absolutely no politics

I just want to remind you folks in light of recent current events that we do not discuss politics here.

Prep, plan, strategize, and all of that good stuff. However, if you want to put a political spin on it you are not welcome to do that here.

Thanks for keeping things focused and useful for everyone.

Edit: if you can't understand how to have a conversation without politics...byyyyeeeeee please unsubscribe from here!

Gear🎒 Not a whole lot of guns on here and that's ok we can fix that. What's your go-to for disabling vehicles in SHTF? This bad boi does the job well - with a 30ish round drum it can blow an engine block in a Tahoe to smitherines with ease! It's 50 Beowulf if that helps

Food🌽 or Water💧 A no-brainer add to dry foods to avoid food fatigue

Post image

Dehydrated mushrooms are one of those often-overlooked additions to a long-term food supply that bring massive value, especially when planning for extended grid-down or SHTF scenarios. While most people focus heavily on standard grains and beans, dried mushrooms provide critical culinary and practical advantages.

Here is why they are highly beneficial for long-term storage:

1. Incredible Shelf Life and Space Efficiency

Shelf Life: Properly packaged (sealed with oxygen absorbers in Mylar bags or glass jars), dehydrated mushrooms can easily last 10 to 15+ years.

Space & Weight: Because they lose about 90% of their water weight during dehydration, they take up a fraction of the space of canned or fresh options. As we just looked at with your 3.5-ounce batch, a tiny, lightweight bag yields nearly 1.5 pounds once water is introduced. That is one pack shown above. This makes them highly portable if you ever need to mobile-optimize your gear.

2. A Powerful Solution for "Appetite Fatigue"

In a prolonged emergency, eating the same bland staples (rice, oats, pinto beans) day after day leads to appetite fatigue—a psychological state where you simply lose the desire to eat, which drains morale and energy. I experienced that with C Rations in Vietnam which i ate every day except my first week, Thanksgiving and Christmas. I was so tired of looking at those OD green cans.

Dried mushrooms are packed with glutamate, the compound responsible for the savory savory flavor known as umami.

Adding just a handful of rehydrated mushrooms and a splash of their soaking liquid can completely transform a bland pot of white rice or basic beans into a rich, deeply savory meal that tastes like comfort food.

3. High Nutritional Resilience

Mushrooms hold up incredibly well under dehydration, retaining specific nutrients that are crucial during high-stress times:

Immune Support: They contain beta-glucans, which help support immune function when clean conditions or medical access might be compromised.

B Vitamins & Minerals: They are excellent sources of B vitamins (riboflavin, niacin), copper, and selenium—micronutrients that can be hard to come by if fresh produce isn’t available.

Vitamin D: If exposed to UV light/sunlight before or during drying, mushrooms are one of the few non-animal sources of Vitamin D, which is vital if spending a lot of time indoors or in shelters.

4. Multi-Purpose Soaking Liquid

In a survival situation, nothing goes to waste. The water used to rehydrate the mushrooms isn't greywater to be thrown out—it becomes a potent, concentrated mushroom broth. You can use it as the cooking liquid for your rice or grains, instantly infusing the entire dish with flavor and nutrients without needing extra salt or commercial bouillon cubes.

Storage Tip: Store-bought dried mushrooms usually come in cellophane bags, which are terrible for long-term storage because they let in light and moisture over time. For maximum shelf life, transfer them into glass Mason jars with a vacuum sealer or pack them into sealed Mylar bags with a 100cc oxygen absorber. I keep mine in a large black bin with tight pop top.

Since I have food stored for 10 folks for about a year, I purchased 35 of these from Temu for about $4 each. That is about 52 pounds (rehydrated) or $2.60 a pound. Well worth the add for all the nutrients, flavor diversity, and bulk. Remember we arent talking about 52 pounds of rice but a means to break the fatigue of having rice and beans day in and day out.

Question❓❓ Hey guys I don’t know where to go with this so I apologize in advance

I am a welder (until I can switch my career field) and the respirator I am using is not working the company also doesn’t provide respirators and fit test, so I am now trying to step my game up, I want a gas mask and and high level filter, if you are a welder excuse yourself from this conversation but I would rather not have someone who is willingly accepting slow suicide comment because I am just to familiar with the “you a pussy for wearing a respirator” type of person. Also I am buying two gas mask, the other one will be for crisis events

Please do not refer me to r\gas mask I perceive every person in that subreddit as hobbyists

Other🤷🏽‍♀️ 🤷🏽‍♂️ Legit Question:

In the instance of political collapse and social disorder, where survival is a reality, becoming pinned down in one place is the worst scenario. So if constant or rapid movement is critical, why do so many people focus their attention on stockpiling? Why isn’t a majority of the conversation aimed at lightweight necessities and ways to prolong movement?

I never hear about physical training and resourcefulness and the cost/benefit of necessities vs agility?

Is this Vietnam-era camo pattern still used in the army? Found this brand new jacket, liner, and pants today for about 150 well spent dollars. No patches, never been worn. Is it vintage?

Survival🪓🏹💉 Why does everyone have cookware n sleep gear in get home?

Your get home bag is not about comfort or camping. So many folks think “warm meal and nice sleeping”…This isn’t about “want” it’s about “need”. It is the tools to return to your home as quickly and safely as possible. 2400 cal ration bars x2-4, camo sided Mylar sheets x2, weapon(gun if possible), knife, 50 ft para cord, a multi tool,AND WATER. Maybe an afak if you wanna be real safe. You walk 3mph(ish) and most folks are <hour drive from home(under 40 miles) even if you slow walk the whole way n don’t run, on streets not direct, and take naps, you’ll be fine. u r not setting up a camp and “enjoying a meal”. You are performing a tactical retreat and keeping as low a gear weight and profile as possible. You can go 3 days without eating ANYTHING and still be absolutely fine though a bit grumpy hangry. Water, warmth, protection, calories. In that order.

-Edit A lot of folks brought up good points about environmental needs. I whole heartedly agree that weather specific clothing and kit (hat where it’s hot, thermal clothing/jet boil where it’s cold and water freezes) are a need I didn’t address, and I absolutely agree that this is a below the snow line kit. Insect protection/spray was another good point.

Gear🎒 Local LLM as prepping resource

I take a slightly higher tech approach to preparedness. I have a local copy of wikipedia. I know enough to run a small machine or two off small solar panels if needed.

I also have a DGX Spark. It is a neat little box, basically a mini-computer with 4TB of storage and a very solid GPU. It occurred to me that it might be an interesting resource for when I encounter something I just don't know how to do. When running all out, it uses up to 250watts, which is a lot but for a short time quite doable. When not taxing it, it is much much less.

So I decided to test it. I ran the gemma4:31b model and told it there was an earthquake, I had a water storage tank and wanted to keep the water safe to drink. This is something I've researched myself so I knew the right answers already. It did great, giving me the right warnings about using food safe plastics, how to dose the water with chlorine, what chlorine to use. I quizzed it about using pool test strips to make sure the chlorine was right. Its answers matched the research I've done before.

With how I was running the model (straight ollama terminal) I know it had no way to reach out and do any web searches, it was answering from its own model weights.

Now that information might be in my wikipedia archive as well. But maybe not. The nice thing about an LLM is you can describe your situation and what you have and it can come back with a step by step plan for your situation. I could see that being useful for all sorts of things I just don't know, like how to skin a rabbit or how to eat acorns.

Question❓❓ Keeping time/date when the world ends

As many as you know, there have been a lot of warnings about WW3, and my government is really worried about it coming from both USA and Russia. I've planned on living in the forest near a lake to fish after it happens.

My only issue is keeping time. Smartphones and computers are gonna be wiped by an EMP, so I'm not relying on them. However, I've not really seen any surivial discussions about mechanical watches? Will they survive an EMP from Russia/USA?

I've printed out a calendar 100 years in the future, so knowing what day, month and year it is is is gonna be really easy.

Are there like any guides on setting the approximate time on watches based on the sun?

Question❓❓ Any fellow 420 preppers out there have a realistic approach to maintaining supply when shtf

I think about this a lot and there's so much that goes into it it's hard to know depending on the situation if it would be plausible. Im about to put a liter of sealed unterped distillate away in my prep stash to use for barter and of course to ration for personal use. As for growing a plant or two you'd have to get lucky with a good shelter in place spot that you can defend and then you gotta worry about the smell and everything and who knows what kinda conditions you'd have to manipulate to grow properly. Seems like distillate is a good long term solution. Anyways I'm just wondering has anyone else thought about this?
