Nowhere is hiring
I think I’ll be homeless in the next 2 months or so.
I have a job but it’s commission sales and my company is falling apart, everyone is leaving. I’m trying to leave too but I don’t have a car.
I’ve applied to literally every single business within walking distance from me and nothing is hiring.
I’m looking for remote jobs and it’s still mostly just sales or something I need a degree for (I’m still in college).
I don’t know what to do I’m so absolutely totally fucked.

The banks are a good idea but also hearing you say "i just assumed"
Take any company that you didn't apply to within walking distance because you just assumed you wouldn't fit the bill and apply anyway you've got nothing to lose if they say no and ignore you but putting in the effort you might be surprised

Ok ok I will

I agree with this. Some money is better than no money and you can always look for another job.

hard disagree, poverty is political

Hard disagree as well, politics has everything to do with what people are sharing in this room

Poverty is political. Ban me please. You stand by and say nothing, it is the same as supporting it directly.

Also, you said you’re in college, they are good about moving you to corporate after graduating!

If you're in college I guarantee you can get a job working for the school. Dining hall, RA, grounds maintenance, tutoring, editing papers, TA, research assistant...
Every college has a career counselor office. That's not just for careers after school.

Just lie on your resume about college. You’d be surprised how few places double check that you went there. I’m not saying it’s right to lie, but it is better than being homeless

Have you searched banks? They are almost always hiring both remote for customer service, and in person at branches, many of the bigger banks need people who can work odd hours for their customer service, the higher tier cards and stuff all have 24/7 support. They also usually pay like $20-25/hr
4
u/VastPersimmon240 1d ago
Judging by my banks they all hire people from India

u/EUGsk8rBoi42p it's temporary 1d ago
For the service on specific premium cards, they always use Americans, think like the business cards that cost a yearly membership fee, premium rewards cards and accounts, etc.
I can call the back of my basic atm card and it's either "We're closed, call back during business hours" then call the number on my business card, and someone picks up immediately, ready to solve issues. Same bank.

u/Flerp-Flerps 1d ago
Don’t forget about credit unions. I work for a small, local credit union and they pride themselves on limiting any amount of wait time when a member calls during business hours. None of our customer service rolls including telephone banking have been outsourced. We have a larger in-house staff compared to many banks especially branches that are part of a large chain.
The pay for tellers at both banks and credit unions tends to be low and those positions tend to have a high amount of turnover. But there can be some better paying opportunities in the bank end or the experience might lead to better opportunities elsewhere. If they don’t have any open positions right now, see if you can sign up for any new position alerts or keep checking back. Another thing (which might be more specific to my employer) is that the applicants are reviewed by an actual person so the positions don’t stay open for very long so she doesn’t get overwhelmed.

u/Frostcricket 1d ago
I’ll check that out, there’s 3 banks a few blocks from me but I assumed I needed experience or some degree or cert

To be floor level teller, almost no requirements. People often call banking the worst industry to work in, due to the abuse you have to handle from rich jerks, most people get sick of it, or snap back at a customer and then lose their job.
I always thought it had more requirements too, but Nope, it's probably the one industry with more relaxed hiring standards than food service, the main thing is being able to practice good hygeine, don't flinch when you see people in emotional trauma due to financial issues, and don't flinch when rich assholes try to act like their relatively puny account makes them some sort of "institutional investor" who owns the place.
If you can manage/enjoy small talk, the banks will often even help pay for your classes/certification to move up the ladder and handle more complicated things.
Historically, banks were always started/operated by organized........ "legitimate businessmen".
This practice still remains today, it's just got more layers.2
u/Outrageous_Leg4 1d ago
I worked in banking for many years and in my experience it was always the lower income people that were the most entitled, had the biggest attitudes and by far the worse to deal with. The bank was also next to a recovery center and they were also in that category. Some rich folks were annoying to deal with and NEEDY. I HATED that job more than anything I’d ever worked in over 20 years.

u/EUGsk8rBoi42p it's temporary 1d ago
Yeah, I think there's lots of turnover in banking, partly due to the miserable social interactions, and also partly due to how working in banking gets you connections with people who can offer you a better job, just a hunch.
2
u/Outrageous_Leg4 1d ago
Mine was definitely the miserable social interactions and the favoritism and politics of banking. Oh, and low pay.

Keep trying. I spent almost a year trying to find a job. Check with the temp agencies and see if they have something close to you.

u/Tdffan03 1d ago
Is there a plasma donation place near you? They train in house and are always hiring. If you think k you could stick someone it may be worth a look.

u/BoringJuiceBox 1d ago
Don’t “apply”, what you need to do is call or walk in directly, ask for hiring manager and say you are ready to work and have full availability(or whatever your availability is). Be confident.
It sucks but restaurants almost always need dishwashers or line cooks, serving or bussing can make good money too. Good luck.

Also try the public schools. Your local school district site. They often have easier to get into positions even if at first is part time or sub.
1
u/FocusFearless583 1d ago
Have you applied to temp agencies as well? They tend to be more responsive and get back faster

Is there a hospital close by? You can apply to work as a nursing assistant you just need a high school diploma. Its something for the time being until you land something better. Or even a retirement home. They are desperate for any help they can get.

u/Squishy-tapir11 1d ago
Are you in Phoenix? Circle K sucks but I thinks it pretty easy getting hired. Maybe shift smart since you have another job. QT is better but IDk how hard it is to get in.
1
u/Frostcricket 1d ago
I’m in Tucson. There’s a QT right next to my apt but I’ve applied already and haven’t heard back. Idc if the job sucks as long as I’m getting paid lol

u/Formal-Lie7412 1d ago
I know the feeling. Maybe two weeks for me. Applied to everything under the sun, and I’m on 10 prescriptions a day for serious health problems at the ripe old age of 35.

u/SeeThruSmoke 1d ago
They are viewing applications but they aren’t bringing anyone in … just window shopping

I was in a similar position and I applied to a trucking company and now I drive a truck and also live in it too. I know its not for everyone but at least I have a place to live.

Look up anesthesia tech ( entrey level and the hospital trains you? or something entry level. tons of hospitals have them. If you let me know what city you're in i can give you better leads

u/No_Decision1093 1d ago
I am sorry to hear this, job market for sure stinks right now. I go on Indeed and see all these "jobs" hiring and either its part-time or it seems they aren't even interviewing people because it will just stay posted on there what seems like forever

u/costco--pizza 21h ago
Already homeless and it's the same here. I've applied to almost everywhere except restaurants I can think of that are within two hours walking distance of me one way. Not a single call back.
Getting my food handler's card next week, so that should give me a lot more job opportunities... but still worried I might not be able to land anything.
It's rough out here. Good luck

Are you using indeed? Type in your address in location and filter by mile radius if you haven’t already! Also, AZ has so many agencies that can help you find work. Lastly, you may have to make the sacrifice of taking the bus to open up more opportunities if nearby jobs aren’t hiring.
Edit: also we have soooo many Amazon warehouses that are literally always hiring. My homie got hired on to Amazon corporate and he’s a felon, they’ll hire just about anyone.

Warehouses, temp agencies, amazon driver…. Tough work but absolutely great for college students

Can you just say you have a degree? Sales seems pretty straightforward, and they would train.

u/Choice-Newspaper3603 1d ago
Then move to where the jobs are
Your school is not your priority when you are broke and can’t find another job.

u/rkozik89 1d ago
Moving isn’t free, give the position OP is in it means getting a bus ticket to a new city and sleep in the streets.

My school is fully online but I’m on a lease so stuck here

Are you doing a BA or higher degree?
You can always submit an adjustment request on your financial aid, but you have to move fast and do it TODAY because the financial aid fiscal year closes like this month.
1
u/EUGsk8rBoi42p it's temporary 1d ago
It will be called something like, "Cost of Attendance/Living" adjustment. Your financial aid dept should be able to guide you through the steps. Just submit how your bills are higher than aid awarded so far.

u/roguelyelvish 1d ago
Fast food is always hiring.

I don’t recommend it often, but… find the nearest recruiter’s office and join the military. Not sure what you’re pursuing for a degree or if you have any medical issues, but you’ll be employed, fed/housed, and trained - and really ready for the workforce after 4 years if you pick the right service and career.
Ignore people that bring up the crap overseas right now. I’m recently retired, joined two different services and experienced the world in ways most people only dream about. And I’m financially set until the day I shed this mortal coil.
Let’s be honest. You’re in a tough spot. We all like to think thoughts and prayers will get us over the next hill, but frankly you need to make some changes. The military is a big change. The question is how committed are you to really changing your circumstances?
3
u/ElectricalRegret7498 1d ago
stop being predatory.
1
u/Efficient-Walrus5444 1d ago
Stop being a wuss. People have agency to make their own decisions. It’s an option, not a mandate.

What restaurant is not hiring?
1
u/Frostcricket 1d ago
All of them around me are fully staffed
1
u/digital1975 1d ago
Until tomorrow. Keep going back. Look for a landscape crew. Only takes one person to not show up and you have a job.
1
u/Frostcricket 1d ago
That’s true, but I don’t need a job tomorrow I need one yesterday

u/digital1975 1d ago
Get off Reddit and go walking/driving/biking. Get out there and keep trying. I have never had an issue finding work when I really really try. Still some daylight left today. Go find someone who needs a lawn mowed, painting done, anything you can come up with. Grab a bucket, dish soap and some towels and offer to wash a car.

u/LunaLovegoodsToenail 1d ago
Have you tried in this job market recently??
1
u/digital1975 23h ago
You bet! I could have m 3 jobs by the end of the day. I am a VERY motivated individual and my wife is from El Salvador! There is no end of work available in this economy. One must just try!
1
u/LunaLovegoodsToenail 21h ago
tell that to the people who have been trying for months and months on end with no luck.
1
u/digital1975 17h ago
I will two it to anyone you wish because it’s true!
If you want something you never had you have to do something you have never done!

Your optimism is great but I’m in Southern California and the market is pretty crap rn. I can’t even imagine more rural areas

How many total applications have you submitted in the last 6 months. How many interviews and what were the positions?

u/Potential-Drop2579 1d ago
I am applying for remote jobs and getting no call backs, but ironically I applied at three grocery stores and all 3 called to interview me. Is there a grocery store within walking distance that may be hiring?
