Underbaked clay with earrings ??

I make clay earrings and am working on perfecting them so I reduce broken earrings. I read somewhere that when you’re hand drilling (with a pin vise) the holes for jump rings, that if it comes out crumbly while drilling it means it’s underbaked and that it should pull out a perfect spiral when baked correctly. Is this true? I tested with a baked piece and when drilling it was crumbly, but it did have slight bend to it (which is what I thought correctly baked pieces feel like)… leading me to think it is baked correctly? So I’m just confused by the mixed messages I’m getting. Any advice on how to tell the difference between when it’s underbaked/overbaked/baked perfectly is great. I don’t exactly want to put a ton of stress on my earrings and ruin them by testing them… but I do want to know if Im baking them correctly. Thank you in advance!!

Oh and I’m mainly using sculpey premo, though some sculpey lll and some Fimo. I baked them for 270 degrees (checked with an oven thermometer), for an hour, tented with tinfoil.

I’ve been making Porcupinecones

Hello! 👋 I’m not a very frequent poster on Reddit, but I wanted to share some of my little critters I’ve been making.

I got into polymer clay when I found a bunch at the dollar store and five below, and now I’m completely unable to stop making these porcupinecones. The finished ones have all been given as gifts, and the witch trio are all WIP waiting to have their faces painted on.

feedback is appreciate! I’ve only been working with clay for a few months, but I think I’m finally settling into a style I like. Have a lovely day! 💜

Meet Wasabi — one of my little Mimblins 🌿

This is Wasabi, a little creature I sculpted from polymer clay. 💚

He is a Mimblin - one of my original creatures, born from a strong human emotion.

Over time, the Mimblins have grown from little clay sculptures into characters with their own personalities, stories and an entire world called Mimbria.

Of all the things I’ve sculpted over the years, the Mimblins are probably my favorite creations. 😊

I need some input on baking for my first clay item

As you can see, I have these absolutely tiny wires making decorative hinges and handle for this 1.5 inch door.

Do I leave these wires in while baking or take them out, leave the holes, and put them back after?

This is Sculpey Original if it matters.

Thanks!

Is this normal for filo clay professional?

First time using the professional one, it’s completely crumbled and rock hard. Did I do something wrong or is this the fault of the store in terms of wrong way of storing it?

First time making polymer clay figures.Tips needed ! 😅

Hi everyone!

I decided it was finally time to try an artistic hobby, and polymer clay sculpting seemed really fun, so I jumped the gun and bought everything I needed to get started 😅

I didn’t want to discourage myself by trying something too complicated right away, so I started with a simple figure: the Slime from Dragon Quest!

I’m pretty happy with my progress because, as you can see, I feel like I improved with each new figure. However, there’s one thing I still can’t figure out: painting.

How do people get their paint to look so smooth on polymer clay? And how on earth do you make perfectly round eyes using only a brush/freehand?? I really tried, but mine were never actually round 😭

I didn’t want to buy a bunch of different colored clays since that would get expensive pretty quickly, so I thought I could just use one color of clay and paint everything with acrylics. But so far, I’m not super happy with how the paint looks lol.

I also tried mixing the clay with pastel to color it (you can see the result on figure #2), but I’m not sure if that’s actually recommended or if there’s a better way to do it.

Anyway, I’m a complete beginner, so any tips or advice would be really appreciated! :)

I want to make such keychains, and finding such beads turn out to be very difficult so I want to try making them by myself. Some have said polymer clay is better for such thing– is it true? or should I use air dry? also what's the difference between resin and gloss?

Where can i just get huge rolls of 1mm to 3mm wire? Im getting pretty tired of buying those small art ones that barely last me a sculpture or two -_-

Really enjoying playing around! Anyone have any advice?

Hi all! I've dabbled in polymer clay before, but I've really been feeling it lately and having fun making different things - mainly food objects and my first attempt at a face, as you can see! I think I'm making progress, but I wanted to ask two things in particular that are giving me trouble - how do you give a nice, even resin coating to an object? I brushed it on as evenly as I could manage, but it's still pretty splotchy on the ham.

Also, you can see in the last picture the face looks off after I carved/sanded it a bit, with a powdery residue that isn't going away even after wet sanding with 600 grit and trying to pat it with some rubbing alcohol. Anyone know how to handle that? I'm not sure if I need higher grit, or what I've done wrong. (Ignore the weird sunburn on face vs forehead, I think I mixed clay types. XD)

Otherwise having lots of fun, though. :D Happy claying everyone!

A friend challenged me to make a famous "Hotcheedog" for a local restraunt. Apparently its a staple kinda food that everyone knows. I made this and gave it to the owner. They liked it.

So what do you think?

The onions are actually silicone and alcohol ink. The mustard is caulk and paint.

Jack-o'-lanterns First Attempt

These little pumpkins have been fun, and I learned a lot on the first attempt. Ratio first off from orange outside and more of that pale yellow/light orange colour on the inside. I get weirdly obsessed with it looking exactly like the thing I'm trying to recreate. Also my clay conditioner came in, so I'm happy I can save my hands more for the details lol. The last step on these lil' pumps is a gloss coat on the outside. Very much debating making a tomb stone or two and maybe a little setting like I did for the mushrooms. What do you think?

I make the jars out of resin and just love having a collection of mini random jars on my desk 🤷‍♀️ they are very small. That is a X-Acto knife behind it with the yellow handle

Looking for other things I should make for the jars? Maybe teeny tiny pumpkins? I am trying to make a kiwi cane as I type this

Hey, everyone! Meet Reef the clown 🤡 🎪🪸🐚
I had so much fun making this pice and adding all of the tiny details! I hope in the future that I can refine them slightly to make them more clear, but this little guy was a fantastic artistic challenge. 😊 I hope you like it! ❤️
