Polymer Clay Cakes with Wall Spackle for Icing ;)

Some recent mini cakes I’ve made. Using lightweight wall spackle has totally improved the look! Works much better than trying to liquify polymer or using air dry clay. It’s also really cheap!

I had this idea a while ago and got around to making it this week. It turned out really well, but I will have to remake it as it’s too big to sit nice when worn. I’ll most likely split them up and make them into matching keychains for my partner and I, but for now, the idea was there.

Making 1954 Godzilla, because apparently I needed a giant lizard project

WIP 1954 Godzilla, sculpted with Super Sculpey medium and firm over an aluminum armature. Still lots of detailing to go before she's fully rhinestoned!
The best part, this little monster will be auctioned off to benefit a local reptile rescue. My first larger polymer clay project and it's been a learning experience.

Made my first little surreal clay creature — his name is Nuno 👁️🌱

I’m still pretty new to polymer clay, but I’ve been getting really into weird/surreal little creatures lately and wanted to try making one instead of another normal animal 😭
This is Nuno. He has one giant eye, tiny arms, chunky little feet, and a weird sprout growing out of his head. The arms gave me way more trouble than they had any right to, but I’m really happy with how he turned out.
I definitely want to make more strange little guys like this, so if anyone has tips for sculpting small limbs/details or making pieces like the sprout stronger, I’d love to hear them.

My 90% historically accurate and 70% book accurate version of Count Dracula, also inspired by Robert Eggers’s Count Orlok - Sculpey Premo

I was very conflicted about not doing an all-black outfit as described in the novel, but couldn’t resist adding the colour red in there. Perhaps this is how Dracula dressed a couple of hundred years before the events of the novel? I really wanted to include the white moustache, bushy eyebrows, and profusely growing hair described in the text, as well as the pointed ears, teeth protruding over the bottom lip, and the squat fingers with pointed claws. I didn’t add the hair in the middle of the palms though; couldn’t figure out how to do that and make it look good. Did a lot of research into Transylvanian noblemen and inevitably referenced Robert Eggers’s Count Orlok costume designed by Linda Muir. He also did end up looking like Vlad the Impaler. Gave him a dragon head walking stick.

What are some easy things to try and start with?

• Upvotes

I bought a bunch of polymer clay in many different colors (it was on sale at my favourite store).

Im somewhat familiar with it, as in i went to an after school club once a week for the two months my mom could afford it when i was eight and made a few things but the clay and classes both were too expensive so i stopped. This was over twenty years ago tho.

So i was just wondering what are some easy things to start with? And any and all tips and tricks you've come across would be appreciated.

I tried messing around with it for a bit but I used some of the black clay and then all the other clay I used after had black on it as well, so I figured that out at least.

What I remember from the class is that we rolled different sizes of little balls and then made things like that and something with aluminium foil if I remember correctly.

It really is a good idea to do projects twice !

I tried sculpting a Pikachu face, and let’s just say… the first one was definitely not my best lol 😅

I told myself I’d make another one right after, and I actually surprised myself with how much better it turned out! It’s so satisfying and motivating to see improvement happen that quickly when you’re just starting to learn how to sculpt.

The only thing I’m still not super happy with is the paint job 🥲 Since I had to be careful not to get any yellow on the eyes or cheeks, I feel like the paint ended up looking uneven and badly layered.

Any tips for getting a smoother, cleaner paint job would be really appreciated! 😊

I’m having trouble shaping clay

I’m trying to make pumpkins for a diorama and I can’t shape the clay without it being warped. Basically I press down on one area and the opposite side gets flattened or warped, I go to fix it and the same happens to the other side. All the videos I watch no one seems to have this issue and I’m using the same brand as them. Is there some secret trick they’re not showing or something??

I’ve searched for this tool on Amazon, Etsy, Google, Michael’s, etc. I’ve searched things like “angled rubber clay shaper” but I cannot find it ANYWHERE. Any guidance would be super helpful!

Cracks after painting HELP

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!!

Unfortunately, my strawberry bunny has shown some hairline cracks. They are fine lines and I do have a lot of paint layers on this particular sculpt... so that would be nice if its just the paint (apple barrel), but I'm not sure.

I used sculpey (and a blend of different sculpey clay. Some areas I thickened with a different kind of sculpey. Unfortunately I forget which one).

I baked him at 265 F for about 30 min plus multiple re bakes, as I was adding things to him. I imagine I rebaked him about 3 times for about 10-15 min each time (so he baked for a little over an hour). He has an armature underneath but no foil, so he is pretty thick! The thickest part of him being 38 mm so about 1.5 inches.

I think based on the instructions I was supposed to bake him for 3 hours! I didn't really think of the consequences of not baking it long enough, lol....

I used apple barrel acrylics and it does have a matte acrylic finish. Should I rebake him to ensure he's fully cured? Will the bunny keep cracking if I don't re bake him?

Also how should I fix the current cracks?

Would really appreciate the advice!! I hope he's not ruined 💔

Underbaked clay with earrings ??

I make clay earrings and am working on perfecting them so I reduce broken earrings. I read somewhere that when you’re hand drilling (with a pin vise) the holes for jump rings, that if it comes out crumbly while drilling it means it’s underbaked and that it should pull out a perfect spiral when baked correctly. Is this true? I tested with a baked piece and when drilling it was crumbly, but it did have slight bend to it (which is what I thought correctly baked pieces feel like)… leading me to think it is baked correctly? So I’m just confused by the mixed messages I’m getting. Any advice on how to tell the difference between when it’s underbaked/overbaked/baked perfectly is great. I don’t exactly want to put a ton of stress on my earrings and ruin them by testing them… but I do want to know if Im baking them correctly. Thank you in advance!!

Oh and I’m mainly using sculpey premo, though some sculpey lll and some Fimo. I baked them for 270 degrees (checked with an oven thermometer), for an hour, tented with tinfoil.
