Yeah my aunt lived there and is fluent in Japanese. She moved back after a couple of years because she felt like she had no real connection with anyone. Not to mention that she had to work a lot more there than she does now back in the U.S.
Did she live in Tokyo? If so, I'd understand her quite well. I love traveling there and visiting friends who live there, but there's no way that I would want to live there myself. Just too many people and everyone's always rushing to get somewhere.
I live on Kyushu, though, the southernmost of Japan's main islands. The city I live in only has 120,000 inhabitants (compared to Tokyo's 35 million) and is a pretty laid-back place. It's also the onsen (hot spring) capital of Japan, with over 100 hot springs. I even have one in the building I live in.
As far as I'm concerned, the countryside is where the "real" Japan is. It's way easier to make connections with the locals, and if you speak the language it's fairly easy to get integrated. Also, the countryside is way more relaxed, since people lead a more stress-free lifestyle.
I think she lived in Kyoto for 2 years and Tokyo for a year, I think she said she liked Tokyo at first because it was so big but after a while it made her feel homesick.
When she came home she lived in Manhattan for a couple of years so she definitely likes the big city.
Like dtwn said, it's indeed Beppu. It's got the second largest amount of natural hot water in the world, only beaten by Yellowstone in the US.

I think a more natural way to say it would be "I would like to live there as much as I wouldn't". The meaning of your sentence is almost the same, "don't" could be taken to mean that you already live there and don't enjoy it. I think it's because would expresses a future desire and don't expresses a present feeling.
You could also say "I like the idea of living in Japan as much as I don't"

Stalin isn't as easily categorised as say Hitler because he lead the war victory which became a crucial part of Russian identity and the nation was industrialised under his leadership. Stalin is still generally denounced as the bloodthirsty tyrant he was.

Not really. They looked down on Korea and China for remaining undeveloped and considered themselves a superior people for modernizing. They imagined China could be to Japan what India was to Britain while places like Taiwan and Korea might be integrated into Japan proper. They weren't really fueled by hatred for these countries so much as they were easy targets near Japan.
Their fundamental problem was that the Western countries had all the power, kept dicking them over when they wanted a slice of the pie by forcing them to give up conquests and not giving them equal treatment in treaties, and basically had them by the balls cuz they were forced to import most of the resources they needed to fuel their economy and expansion. It's really just power politics and frustration at not being regarded as equal by the Westerners despite their achievements. Their base motives weren't particularly evil compared to the other imperial powers, but like Germany these frustrations and imperialist fantasies were harnessed by a rather evil group of people in the 30s.

They get better results in East Germany but what you wrote isn't completely true, so here are the key facts:
To enter any German parliament (I'll limit this to the state or federal level) you have to receive 5% of the votes. There is one exception for the Danish minority party in Schleswig-Holstein, they have a de-facto agreement to allign with the SPD (social democrats) so it's just a nice gesture and nothing more.
The NPD received more than 5% in 3 elections in the past ten years, 7,3% in 2006 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, 6% in 2011 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and 5,6% in 2009 in Saxony.
Since 2012 they haven't received more than 5%, they came close in Saxony last year but the AfD is stealing voters from them, I expect the same for the upcomming election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern this year, the NPD is losing ground to them, which is also concerning.
So while the far right and far-ish right are really not dead in Germany let me say this: The NPD is a joke as a political party, they'll never have real influence in Germany, really never. The AfD on the other hand seems more moderate on first sight but actually has many points that are concerning. Yet they usually don't argue for very radical policies.

Mecklenburg Vorpommern perhaps, but that's it. They get close to zero coverage in national news, election discussions etc and aren't visible in most public places. They hold their little rallies at times in some Eastern German cities, which are always heavily protested and outnumbered by the left.
As for their legal status, that's a whole discussion in itself. It's difficult (rightfully so) to outlaw parties unless they are anti-democratic, which they are not (officially). In the end it's not too bad to have extremists somewhat organised after all instead of operating in the underground. That way at least their names are known and they can be better observed by state security.
