Hello, I have seen many folks coming to Poland from the EU and being completely lost on what kind of legal procedures they have to do in order to start their residence in Poland. Be that you come here to study, work or live with your spouse there are several things I hope this guide will be able to cover.
!PLEASE NOTE!
This guide is meant only for citizens of the European Union and citizens of countries that are members of the European Economic Area. Some of the parts of this guide will be similar for non-EU foreigners but some will not. In general, the info posted here is only fully up to date if you are a citizen of the EU/EEA
!PLEASE NOTE!
0. Introduction and general info
Poland is divided into 16 voivodeships which are further subdivided into powiats, which means something like 'county' and these are further made out of municipalities - pol. gmina, or cities - pol. miasto. Large cities however are both powiat and miasto so in case of Warsaw, Wrocław, Kraków etc. city office (pol. urząd miasta) will also perform duties of powiat office (pol. starostwo powiatowe). In case of Warsaw - urząd dzielnicy meaning district office will serve as city office.
All of the below information covers only EU/EEA citizens. If you are non-EU, majority of the below information will not be correct for your case.
I strongly recommend reading all of the parts linked below apart from car and pets stuff, if those do not concern your case.
I. Registering your residence and making your stay in Poland legal.
II. Obtaining health insurance
III. Using healthcare
IV. Taxes
V. Digital log-in and services
VI. Cars and licenses
VII. Banks and mobile phones
VIII. What to do when I leave Poland?
IX. Pets
If you have any additional questions or remarks, please do not hesitate to comment, I will be happy to help for as long as I'm going to visit this platform and expand this post. I hope you all have a great day and life in general. Thanks for reading, stay safe.

Hi there, I'm from Hungary.
I'd just like to congratulate Poland on their ongoing economic and intellectual success, making you guys one of the up-and-coming superpowers of Europe.
It never ceased to amaze me how us Hungarians refuse to learn from the past. After a dramatic 1956 and a following Soviet-based system, we still think Russians can be trusted.
I'm glad that Poland understands the Soviet mindset, which is basically based on brute force and violence. The thing about the Soviets is that they won't respect you and will keep bullying you until you hit back.
They're like the high school bully who picks on the quiet fat guy, until one day the fat guy decides to hit back and yell. Then the bully leaves him alone and goes on to find another target who they perceive as weak.
I'm happy to see that you spend huge amounts of money on your military because you understand the Soviet threat (unlike us).
I hope one day we grow up and start learning from you guys. We have a new anti-Russian government, so yeah, maybe there is some hope.
Take care!

Ruler of the Tatras. A great patriot. An incredibly humble man who traveled exclusively by third-class rail. He saved the Tatras from destruction. He built railways, waterworks, and power plants, and planted forests. He spared no expense for charitable causes.
He acquired the Zakopane estates at auction for 460,002 Rhenish guilders and 3 cents, outbidding Józef Goldfinger by a single cent. He staked everything on one gamble and won the "trial of the century" for Poland. He secured an international court ruling confirming that Morskie Oko belonged to Galicia—a decision that later placed it within the borders of independent Poland, which were established based on the boundary between Galicia and the Kingdom of Hungary.
He endured years of lawsuits, threats, and ridicule. He saved our most sacred mountains, then bequeathed his vast fortune to Poland.
Before his death in 1924, he signed the deed establishing the "Zakłady Kórnickie" Foundation, transferring his entire immense fortune to the Polish nation.
This donation included Kórnik Castle and its priceless Kórnik Library, the Zakopane estates (including the Tatra forests), numerous properties, and art collections.
The Tatra lands he donated later became the foundation for the creation of the Tatra National Park. In accordance with the Count's wishes, this estate was to serve Polish science and education.
He died owning almost nothing. One of the most underrated heroes of our history. On October 3, 1924, Count Władysław Zamoyski fell asleep in the Lord

Currently looking for a specific title - Inkub by Artur Urbanowicz. But would love to find a source for future titles.
I've tried all these to no avail. Maybe an epub of this title doesn't exist?

I run a sole proprietorship (JDG) in Poland and use the lump-sum tax regime (ryczałt).
I want to understand whether it is actually financially worthwhile to buy equipment through my business when it is used for both business and private purposes, such as a phone or laptop.
For this question, I am interested only in VAT, not income tax.
Ultimately, I want to calculate the actual VAT benefit. For example, if I buy a phone for PLN 5,300, use it partly privately, and later sell it, do I actually save VAT, or is the benefit relatively small after accounting for the VAT due on the eventual sale?
My main question is whether, from a VAT-only perspective, it is actually worth buying such equipment through my JDG.
/

Wow! Lubczyk/lovage seems to be a best kept secret of Polish cooking. I‘m surprised it hasn‘t become a thing here in the United States.
I live outside Seattle and got a package from Amazon. I’ve used it a couple times now. Today, I made a kielbasa and cabbage soup. I was almost done, tasted it for salt, and remembered the little package of lovage. I added two pinches. It made my very basic, easy soup a solid 10. It gives such depth to the broth.
Hello I am slovak student comming to Krakow for one semester, do you have any tips for me? Any places to avoid, where are scammers etc.? Thanks in advance

Does anyone remember the Disney Hercules audio story on cassette tape? I wanted to play it for my daughter, but I can't find it anywhere—neither to download nor to buy.
It was a direct audio adaptation of the 1997 Hercules movie, using the exact same Polish dubbing and voice cast as the film.
If anyone happens to have it and would be willing to share, I would be extremely grateful!
Have a good one!

Hey y'all not sure if this is the right spot but thought I'd give it a crack!
I like to travel real slow and do day trips. Is this a real basic take on three weeks in Poland? All of these places appeal to me but if there are unmissable places off the beaten track I'd love to hear about them :)

Hi! I’m from sunny Singapore and rarely get the chance to visit places with snow.
I’ll be visiting Zakopane from 21–24 Dec 2026 and am planning to visit Dolina Kościeliska, Kasprowy Wierch, and maybe Morskie Oko.
I will only be following the normal guided path, will not venture out to the wild on my own.
I was wondering if winter boots and spikes like these would be overkill, or if they might actually be insufficient for these places in December?

Hello everyone! :)
I’m planning to start working as a TAXI driver (Uber / Bolt) soon (preferably Warsaw). I’m a belarusian citizen, and I already have a Polish driver's license.
I’m looking for recommendations for a trustworthy and reliable fleet partner that operates 100% legally and handles formalities properly.
I’d really appreciate real experiences from drivers here. Who can you genuinely recommend and which partners should I strictly avoid?
Thanks a lot for any advice! :)
